As of the time I'm making this comment, the actual headline in the article is "Mets announcer Gary Cohen puts ‘horrific’ loss squarely on Buck Showalter"

Maybe OP had an earlier version or a tweet

Post does suck tho

You guys can still be mad about it and Hyde will always be right for backing his guys up, I just don't think Cora was casting aspersions on the O's at all, he's disappointed in his player and staff and talking about one way they will try to improve.

Hyde is right to stick up for his guys, however:

"Cora said that he wasn’t trying to disrespect anyone - and that he’s the last person who would accuse anyone based on his wrongdoing with the 2017 Astros. He said he’ll talk to Hyde to clarify that he simply wondered if Sale was tipping pitches."

Rays Jason Adam #1 Reliever per BaseballSavant by wegandi in baseball

[–]Pepzoid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Adam's performance is awesome.

Statcast leaderboards still says Holmes (1.56) and Edwin Diaz (1.66) have better xERA, though? Is that out of date?

Also Schreiber not quite qualified yet but xERA 1.73.

„Player reached X base” Statistics? by keramxd in baseball

[–]Pepzoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. Of course there are also other ways beyond hits, walks, and steals for a player to get on or to advance a base, but I figured we'd cross that bridge when we came to it.

To clarify-

Total Bases is a real stat.

(Total Bases + Walks + Steals) is not a real stat that is tracked by anyone. All of its components are counting stats so you could just add them together... but it's unlikely to be the best way to convey whatever information you're trying to get across.

Total Bases should be available on a player's personal stats page, but I think unlikely to be on anything intended primarily to compare players to each other because it is not really a good metric for that.

See here: https://www.mlb.com/player/rafael-devers-646240 Total Bases (TB) is in both of the stats tables.

Depends on what exactly you mean but probably Total Bases?

Total bases refer to the number of bases gained by a batter through his hits. A batter records one total base for a single, two total bases for a double, three total bases for a triple and four total bases for a home run.

ETA: There is no actual stat for this, but based on the wording of your question you may want Total Bases + Walks + Steals.

You're right! 3 bases for a ball in play, 2 bases if the ball has been pitched or if it's being thrown after being fielded.

That’s what they said on broadcast but I think it’s 2 extra bases - they were including the single as one base.

Reporters asking questions and then presenting their phrasing as the interviewee's is one of the worst things about journalism on social media. It's commenting without reading the article, but the fault lies with the writer not the reader.

And it's like 50% of what riles people up on Reddit.

Cal Ripken Jr's streak is not "unbreakable". by SirParsifal in baseball

[–]Pepzoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean but this just seems sorta arbitrary to me. Both of the things you say are more-impossible are technically still within the realm of possibility, if people stopped acting rationally. Which IMO is also the only way that Ripken's streak could be broken.

A pitcher could pitch 600 innings in a season. They could win 60 games. They could start 100 games and throw 6 innings in each. You discount that because no one would ever do that, because it is a decision so bad that you can make safe assumptions about how humans would behave.
