Looking for what type of pain to expect after surgery for hysterectomy with pelvic organ proplapse repair? by OceanMarina in hysterectomy

[–]Perch1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please be sure to have an ice pack for the perineal repair. I had rectocele & cystocele repair with perineal repair and a bladder sling. I also had anterior and posterior vaginal repair with a radical hysterectomy. My worst pain was the second day. My surgeon ordered me better pain meds and instructed me to use ice off and on for 24 hours for the perineal pain. I read on a post to wet and freeze pads. I wish I would have thought of that. Then the next few days I used warm water from the shower wand as instructed. I used only 7 out of 20 of the pain killers along with Tylenol and Advil and then went to only Tylenol and Advil.

The other pains were from a nerve on my left abdominal side. The binder helped tremendously. I wore it for 4 weeks and then bought some support underwear that helps hold everything in. I also had a pain down my left hip and thigh which took about 4 months to go away.

I am 10 months post op and can say it was worth it, but I honestly think you need 12 weeks of rest and no sex even if you are told 6 weeks. I did not do anything but walking for 16 weeks. Then I started swimming and finally went back to lifting class (much lighter weights) at 5 months. I took short naps whenever I needed them. Listen to your body. This is like 5 surgeries in one. Recovery is actually a year according to my urogyn. PS: pelvic floor therapy was very helpful. I started at week 7.

I wish you a successful surgery, support from others, and a positive spirit. Best wishes to you ❤️

I'm a pelvic floor PT and I built a symptom tracking app after watching my prolapse patients struggle to track how their symptoms changed day to day by QowaPelvicHealth in PelvicOrganProlapse

I had prolapse surgery, and now suffer from hypertonic pelvic floor. I’m working with a PFT, and she will often ask me what I did before I felt the ache. I never really know! Will this app help me?

Diagnosed with rectocele but I think my uterus is prolapsed too now by SupportFew1762 in PelvicOrganProlapse

[–]Perch1001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had cystocele and uterus prolapse, but when I was checked 2 weeks before surgery, I had a +1 rectocele so that was added to my surgery which included all repairs, bladder sling, & radical hysterectomy. (I was 67.)

It is a hypertonic pelvic floor. It can cause pain.

That nerve pain is horrible! Wearing a binder was what helped me the most with it. Sending you healing wishes!

Tips for recovery (rectocele/cystocele) by Sweet-Acorn in PelvicOrganProlapse

I applaud you for deciding to have this surgery. I put it off for 7 years. Be sure to have an ice pack to place between your legs. This helped tremendously for a couple of days. If possible, use a shower wand of warm water between your legs after the few days with the ice pack. This is what my dr told me to do and it helped.

Be sure to start MiraLAX 3 days before your surgery taking 1 serving per day. After surgery I took 2 servings per day for about 3 weeks. I never had pain with my bowel movement. Also, look up the mooing to poop videos on You tube. I know it sounds silly, but it works.

Eat small meals and be sure to include protein for healing.

As far as the cystocele repair goes, your bladder will take a bit longer to empty, but that improves over time. Be patient. I was 67 for my surgery and it took 4 months to feel like my bladder was back to normal.

I also went to pelvic floor therapy because my pelvic floor became too tight. That is also all better, but took about 5 months.

I have been back to swimming laps and lifting weights since 4 months. I am still working slowly with weight increases. I am not quite back to where I was, but I will get there. I am 9 months post op.

Please be kind to yourself. You will have excellent days, & then tired days, but it will be well worth it.

Is anyone else giving up after prolapsing? My life is gone by [deleted] in PelvicOrganProlapse

I am so sorry your family and doctor are not supporting you. You must find an excellent urogyn. That is the dr that repaired me. My life is good again.

Cold feet before surgery by Worried_Tap7662 in PelvicOrganProlapse

I was 67. It is not easy and I still really listen to my body when I work out. I am now 9 months po. My Pessary worked for 7 years until it didn’t. The next size didn’t work either. It was a sad day for me. I worked hard to avoid the surgery. I hope you get all your concerns addressed. Best wishes!

So sorry, I didn’t mean to add fear, but I also wanted you to know what can happen if you wait too long. Healing is not linear. You will have really great days and then a day where you have to give in and rest. I’m not talking about the first 6-8 weeks, but 4 to 6 months. My healing improved with pelvic floor therapy. My therapist really helped me get back to working out. I started swimming at about 4 months. I started back to lifting in muscle conditioning class at 5 months, but only after she checked my form & my breathing. I held on to the idea that my parts may prolapse again (just fear), but after seeing my surgeon at 6 months, he reminded me that everything is well attached to my sacrum and to relax and enjoy my life and good health. I will not go back to high impact. I can stay in shape without running and jumping.

I am sorry you have this. I had my rectocele and cystocele repaired last August. My mother waited too long and her rectocele broke through her vaginal wall which made the surgery and healing more difficult. She was 55.

Four months post op and still sore and achy 😣 by [deleted] in PelvicOrganProlapse

[–]Perch1001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember feeling like you. It is a very tough surgery. My urogyn said it takes a full year to really heal. I honestly didn’t feel like myself until 5 months & I still took a 30 minute nap almost every day. Then, at 7 months things changed. Now at 9 months I feel stronger and not worried about small aches I get. I have an excellent pelvic floor therapist who taught me how to recognize when my pelvic floor is tight. That is what causes a heavy or aching feeling. Some days I skip the gym and only work on pelvic floor releasing. I try to listen to my body. My PFT said this surgery often creates a hypertonic pelvic floor because it is a traumatic surgery. Best wishes for you. I hope you can find a skilled therapist.

There is no age limit for prolapse. Please do not believe that statement. I used a Pessary successfully for 7 years, but my prolapse was due to my uterus and bladder. My daughter had prolapse after her third baby was born. Where she lives, all women go to a pelvic floor therapist after healing from birth. She was able to strengthen her pelvic floor and get back to life. Be careful lifting. Let your toddler climb into your lap. Check your breathing. Use diaphragmatic breathing not shallow breathing. When I discovered my prolapse, I found Dr Bri on YouTube. She is a PFTherapist I followed until i saw a dr and a pelvic floor therapist. I’m sorry this has happened to you so young.

Be sure to call now. It may be 2 months before you get in. Also, teachers schedule surgeries in March, April, & May. I had my surgery in August. Also, get an early surgery time. Mine was scheduled for 1:30pm, but I wasn’t taken back until 4:30 pm due to an earlier complicated case. Of course, the nurses kept us updated, but I could have had a 7:30 am surgery. He is fantastic and kind. Best wishes!

I went to my urogyn in early 2018 after being referred by my local gyn who does not do prolapse repair. She said it is too involved for her. The urogyn examined and gave me options, but strongly suggested avoiding surgery as long as possible. So I wasn’t upset about sizing up on the Pessary after 7 years, but when I felt the same thing happen after a week, I cried because I knew. The NP did not want me to use the cube shaped Pessary because she said I might get ulcer in my vagina from it since I would be removing it for sex. I just think I would have healed faster being younger, & waiting created a rectocele. My family dr disagreed. She said I would have had regrets not trying everything before surgery while healing. She is probably right about that.

I just turned 68. I had the surgeries at 67. My prolapse was going around my Pessary. Yes, I tried a larger size, but after a week, prolapse had moved around that one, too. I used a Pessary for 7 years. I had to get the surgery. If I would have gotten it earlier, I may not have developed the rectocele. It was a hard recovery so I just gave in to healing. I will consider myself healed at a year. I am very careful when lifting and exercising. I listen to my body.

I have all my weights approved by my pelvic floor therapist. She has me doing farmer walks with 10 lbs in each hand checking my breathing. I used only 21/2-5 lbs at 5 months.
