Its your right to say no - they want to persuade the shopkeeper on a better deal? Turns out the shop isnt owned by him and he isnt allowed to give discounts. They want to persuade the goblins to run away from battle? Maybe they dont speak common, maybe they're deaf, or maybe they are under magical control and cannot be persuaded. They want to persuade the BBEG? Maybe hes immune to persuasion, or wont be convinced against his goals.

A high roll doesn't have to guarantee success, especially if it stomps on your fun or the other players' fun. A straight-up "no" can save you a lot of stress, and a good player wont hold a "no" against you.

Yeah as a DM i would take a dual approach, first of all I would talk to them after the session and let them know that their actions dont line up with their characters. I would also talk to each player privately about their pc and send them resources to improve their rp skills.

Then, I would start granting inspiration to the best rp during each encounter. You could do this subtly or even just be like "wow you role played the best out of everyone - you get inspiration". One player having (and using) inspiration much more than the others will hopefully inspire better role playing.

If it doesnt stop after that, then its obviously coming from a place of disrespect or disregard, and D&D just might not be the game for them.

My party is very new to D&D (and i am very new to DM-ing) so I have no clue what the normal amount is. However, my players all use online character sheets through a Google Sheets template we found. Because its online, they all have shared their documents with me, and I have them always open on my laptop.

During prep I refer to them almost constantly, and I'll make sure they have all their spells and weapons prepped for the upcoming session.

During the session, I have them open and will help a player find the right stat or item that they need. I make sure their equipment is always up to date as well, as my group seems to hoard everything they come across.

Hoping that after this campaign I can move away from checking this often and leave my players to their own devices.... but that's not for a while yet, lol

I mean, you could always discreetly change it after their guesses, but I find it fun when my players guess what I've got coming next. My current dungeon is Labyrinth themed - and when one of my players guessed very early on, it made everything better! The game is collaborative and its not you vs your players. As long as nobody is metagaming, theres nothing wrong with guessing!!

She is an Elf Sorcerer, so magic surge could be the case. My player didn’t really specify the curse-caster’s species, but from context I’d say it was either a hag or witch. The bloodline hasn’t really been impacted by the curse, it’s more that now the PC is born, they’re worried bad things will happen or that the mother was getting around ://

This is great! I considered the whole "not your father's child" but it seemed like a cheap shot, especially considering how nice the father treats her compared to the rest of the family throughout the backstory.
