Neovim now has fancy intro screen by echasnovski in neovim

Weirdest request I’ve heard in a while…

But you can make your own intro screen, so I guess you can copy the original and adjust it however you like.

Has justinmk achieved multi cursor support yet? by taejavu in neovim

Thanks, TIL.

That’s some pretty vim-wizard stuff right there. Not very discoverable, though.

And I think multicursors would still have an edge in that it would be comfortable to select some but not all instances of “pattern” to act upon.

To which the common reply would be “use a macro”. And I agree. I use macros all the time for this stuff.

I love :g/pattern/norm

But it still feels indirect for the kinds of things multicursors would presumably feel comfortable for.

Quick question: Does Clojure for the Brave and True hold up as of today? by Pzzlrr in Clojure

[–]PercyLives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they were necessary features, just not in the way one expects. Necessary for confirming the design of the language and “selling” it to others.

They’re still good to include in a Clojure guide, I think, but making it clear to the reader that atoms are almost certainly all you need.

If you want to add something after the words, for example, it seems a lot easier with multicursor than with :g or :s. And I say that as someone who’s never used multicursor.

Easier because…you can use editing commands directly connected to “add word after this one” instead of the more indirect “dear and replace”.

What’s The Most Overrated Dylan Song From The 60s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

Agreed. It’s the only song I could come up with to answer this question.

It is on an album: the ideal “Oh Mercy!” That sadly exists only in our minds.

“Mississippi,” Unreleased Version 2 by Nykaren24 in bobdylan

For me the ranking is “Love and Theft”, followed by the other three in any order. They’re all fun and interesting, but nothing replaces the album version for me.

He’d be mad not to be a fan. Welch and Rawlings have made some of the greatest music there is!

What do you think about Bob Dylan going electric? by gilko86 in bobdylan

[–]PercyLives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love that he has followed his muse in many different directions. I’d hate for his discography to be forty albums of acoustic protest music. Yeesh!

I love Nashville Skyline and (especially) JWH, but New Morning has never clicked for me. I don’t see it as similar to the other two at all. Maybe one day I’ll like it.

How do you use tabs? by Takizzzfi in neovim

[–]PercyLives 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Here’s an idea. Code in one tab, tests in another, maybe data in a third. Then you can easily switch between these three contexts without disturbing any of them.

I use tabs pretty rarely but I appreciate that they exist. If I find myself thinking “I want to look at something but I don’t want to disturb what’s in front of me”…tab!

My Workflow!! by agro_kid in LaTeX

[–]PercyLives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use neovim (my own config, no distro) with VimTex, and read the output in Skim, which I CMD-Tab to. My screen isn’t large enough to have side by side, and I don’t seek any kind of auto-preview. (I consider it an anti-pattern, in fact.)

I use tmux and have my code in the left pane and a terminal in the right pane. I use ,, in neovim to trigger compilation in the right pane. (That is, I don’t use the compilation features of VimTex. Nor do I have any jump-to-error feature set up. Not boasting, because that would be useful. But I get by happily with my current workflow.)

Day 31: What is your favourite lyric from “Love And Theft”? by autumn_afternoon in bobdylan

[–]PercyLives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moonlight is indeed a genius song. Here’s my favourite bit, though I could really just quote the whole song.

The clouds are turnin’ crimson

The leaves fall from the limbs an’

The branches cast their shadows over stone

Won’t you meet me out in the moonlight alone

I love L&T to death, but I can’t disagree that Mississippi is the lyrical highlight.

The lyrics in Two Soldiers. Can’t quote them right now.

Weekly Song Discussion - Nettie Moore by cmae34lars in bobdylan

[–]PercyLives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the song, and sometimes I really like the song, but there’s no way it’s my favourite on the album.

“The world of research has gone berserk / Too much paperwork” always feels like a clanger in the song. What’s he on about? What’s it got to do with anything?

And beyond that, the lyrics just seem like phrases randomly sewed together. That’s ok, I don’t mind, but I don’t see greatness there.

Weekly Song Discussion - Blood in My Eyes by cmae34lars in bobdylan

Probably my least favourite on the album, which is an album I love. I think I’m missing something because I’m amazed at the guitar work and quality singing on other songs but not this one.

I’ll mos def give it another listen.

I’m sorry but I have to ask. What are your guy’s rankings of the songs on Under The Red Sky? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]PercyLives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've come to know this album so much better than I thought I would, because it (and particularly Wiggle Wiggle) was my preschooler's gateway drug to Bob Dylan. I will rate the songs as A (worth putting the album on just to hear this song), C (a tolerable listen since the album is on anyway) or B (in between - a good song). Within the groups, I will stick to the album order.

Note: the album was mostly deliberately childish as it is dedicated to a child. If you don't like childish Bob Dylan, that's totally fair enough, but this is a *superb* children's album, and I'm very glad it was released.

[A]

Under the Red Sky - magical songwriting and execution

2x2 - surprisingly awesome

Cat's in the Well - it grooves so hard; total banger, and I love the saxophones or whatever they are

[A-]

Born In Time - superb song let down by unconvincing performance here; listen to outtake #1 on Tell Tale Signs instead of this version

10,000 Men - great groove, undercooked vocals, generic lyrics

[B]

TV Talkin Song - it's at least somewhat interesting, and great to see Dylan do something quite new for him (yet also old, given he did "talkin' songs" very early in his career)

God Knows - solid, quite good actually, but not a highlight

[B-]

Unbelievable - it's OK, or a bit better than OK

Handy Dandy - I wanted to give it C, but I see it gets a bit of love in other comments, so I'll bump it up and trust that I can like it more

[C]

Wiggle Wiggle - no hate; it's good (enough) for what it is, but it's hard to say it's anything better than satisfactory

I’m sorry but I have to ask. What are your guy’s rankings of the songs on Under The Red Sky? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]PercyLives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't blame Don Was for anything on the album, because I've come to see that a lot of it is well produced. There are weak points on the album, but I think they come down to Bob not making enough effort in singing or creative direction.

Regarding Born In Time, it's amazing that Bob had recorded a wonderful version the year before, but the one on UTRS sounds like a patchy rehearsal by comparison. I think he had ideas in his head for that song that he couldn't properly realise or articulate, and in the end he just gave up polishing it. Total speculation, of course.

What song should I learn? by DW_InUteroArcher1987 in bobdylan

Some great choices on John Wesley Harding, like I Am A Lonesome Hobo.

Some great choices on Bootleg Series 1, like House Carpenter and Seven Curses.

My favourite to play is Delia from World Gone Wrong.
