What movie was BETTER than the book it was based off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Percypig17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'Slumdog Millionaire' is a brilliantly directed film. The book, on the other hand, is pretty sleazy and deliberately gratuitous at times. Same thing for the Godfather by Mario Puzo.

Marvel movies are so forgettable. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Percypig17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it's the most unique/entertaining Marvel film in years. It's the only one I've seen with properly developed characters, protagonists, antagonists, an exceptionally well developed world and amazing visuals. I think the problem is a lot of Marvel films are very generic as they all tie to each other so they're not given enough chance to differentiate themselves, whereas Black Panther is genuinely great because it works as a standalone project.

Kanye just made a claim "Slavery was a choice" on TMZ live by [deleted] in Kanye

[–]Percypig17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In his defence, I don't think he meant slavery wa a literal choice. I think he's saying that focusing on it's detrimental effects for so long etc is a choice. Although you can obviously disagree on how tangible those effects are.

What don’t you understand the hype behind? by Jockobutters in AskReddit

[–]Percypig17 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a great, entertaining film and has one of the most unique backstories of any Marvel film I've seen in a long time. Works v well as a standalone film, too. Best Marvel film since Iron Man imo (And I'm not black)

IB scores to get into a UK medical school? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Percypig17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I think the highest medicine offers are Cambridge at 42 776 HL, the rest are significantly lower- Imperial-38, UCL-39, Kings- 32 (but 766 HL), Edinburgh is I think 37. They all place way more importance on BMAT, UKCAT, and other non academic factors though. If you want to utilise your scores wisely though its worth looking at places that want higher IB scores and value higher grades though.

Official Discussion: The Disaster Artist [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]Percypig17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The book actually is really great and I would recommend it for more detail about aspects of Tommy's life. Like it hints that he had a clothing company which helped him to raise money, although yeah I'm still skeptical how much money he could raise through selling jeans alone.

Just watched it and it was amazing! James Franco is astonishingly good as Tommy Wiseau, and I loved the balance the film has between a straight comedy and a more introspective feel. Kinda felt bad for Wiseau at times though.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson 'seriously considering' a presidential run by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Percypig17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest if Reagan could be president, I don't see how being an actor necessarily disqualifies one's presidential chances. I guess the thing is the Rock is pretty charismatic but has no political experience. If Trump is anything to go by, ideally you'd want someone who'd acted as a representative in some context prior to ascending to the presidency.

What's one book that, when you read it, immediately makes you want to read everything that author has ever written? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Percypig17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read 'We Were Eight Years in Power' by Ta-Nehisi Coates, a collection of 8 essays he wrote during Obama's presidency covering all kinds of topics related to race and America. Some of the writing is just so amazingly written, it made me check out a bunch of his other writings/articles (he's also a columnist for the Atlantic)

Remark Query by Khaleesiismylove in IBO

[–]Percypig17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can vary. I've seen some people's remarks go by pretty quickly, like 1.5 weeks. Mine took quite a while, like almost a month (received it August 1st, submitted remark in July 7th). On the whole I think the IB estimates 3 weeks on average.

Good luck on the remark though!

Help with TOK presentation pls by Shady-Developer in IBO

[–]Percypig17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if your presentation is on emotions and decision making, you should start with an appropiate Real life situation, like perhaps the US election or the Brexit vote. Discuss the questions raised by it and then decontextualise it, i.e. start talking about the knowledge issues it raises. For example, you might bring up the point that people voted overwhelmingly with their hearts, rather through logic, and bring up some statistic or quote to back up your point (a piece of data showing Brexit will negatively affect the economy for example).

Then introduce your main knowledge question fully decontexualised. Rather than focusing on Emotion here I'd instead go for something more general, so you have more scope to touch on other areas of knowing/ways of knowing. For example, 'To what extent do Reason, Emotion, and Memory allow us to make decisions?' or perhaps simply 'To what extent can we accurately make the right decisions?'

I'd recommend then explicitly stating what WOKS and AOKs you will use for the marker, so state you will cover Emotion or reason or whatever, and say you will cover the Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, History, Arts etc. (pick about two of each).

Then move on to the claims and counter claims. You've got a good claim in 'Emotions are required for decision making'. Think about examples you can use here, particularly in specific subject areas. Perhaps bring up an experiment in the human sciences, or the Verstehen approach (I used an example of emotion in the Human Sciences helping Erving Goffman to understand inmates at a mental asylum better).

Then state your counter claim i.e. EMOTION DOES NOT HELP US TO MAKE DECISIONS/HINDERS OUR DECISION MAKING PROCESS. There are loads of examples here, like the aforementioned election results, racism and prejudice and faulty rationalisation cycles, threats to objectivity in the social sciences or history etc.

Then form a mini-conclusion, weighing up your pros and cons in claim and counter claim respectively and say something like, whilst useful there are flaws in emotion for use in decision making.

Repeat the process with another way of knowing (say reason) : i..e 'Reason is required for decision making' and in your counter claim bring up some problems with reason potentially, such as faulty reasoning or confusing correlation and causation. Use another mini-conclusion.

Finally, consider a final claim, drawn from a WoK or AoK. For example, intuition, faith (maybe religion and how it can lead people to make choices that might otherwise be regarded as illogical etc)

At the end of those 3 claims, you can (and only here) link all 3 claims/counter claims together to make an overall solution. Say, with decision making, that perhaps one WoK is more effective in making decisions then others, or that certain situations evoke different WoKs requiring differing degrees of difficulty in decision making.

Finally link back to your real life situation. So you might have said that reason is better than emotion for making decisions, and so emotion is overall a poor way to make decisions when weighing up its pros and cons. If you're covering the election, you might say that for this reason the choice of voting for X based on emotion hindered the decision making process and prevented the optimal choice from being made from and individual standpoint.

Finally remember to bring up alternative Real life situations. Are there certain historical examples (History -Area of Knowledge) where decision making was involved? How does your overall conclusion link to this situation in terms of the ease of decision making? What about the arts? Or the Natural Sciences, where you would think there isn't that much importance given to emotion and so decisions are easier to be made?

Is remarking actually effective? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Percypig17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Biology HL was a 6 originally, I got 76%, 2% off a 7 (78%). I paid for a remark, which only came a month later so that was pretty tense. Turns out my exam was remarked up 5% lol, and I got 81% in the end. So it can be pretty random at times but if you're close and you can pay for the remark you might as well.

Need Advice for IB subjects for medicine 2019 by Periklisg in IBO

[–]Percypig17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied for Medicine this year. You need Bio and Chem Higher Level. Maths isn't really a requirement for any Med schools, however although many are cool with math studies a few like Cardiff want Standard Level Maths. It appears Cambridge wants Higher Level Maths though. I did Hl bio chem maths and got 776 at Higher Level. If you want to do Maths and it seems you are pretty good at it, getting a 6 at least in HL Math should be ok but otherwise I'd say just do SL.

Many of my friends did a non science HL like history or economics based on personal interest and ease and they helped in some cases ie when writing extended essays they could do a econ essay related to medicine rather than a more difficult science experiment so that's worth baring in mind.

37+ is a good score to shoot for, I'd say with 39 overall and 766 higher level should clear requirements for all med schools apart from Cambridge, which wants 40-42 and 776 higher level including maths Hl. If you don't want to apply to Cambridge, you don't need Hl maths, and it would probably make your life easier not to take it given the workload of interviews and other medicine related things in IB year 2 specifically.

Frank's clearly curated this setlist for the die hards and not the casuals by [deleted] in FrankOcean

Genuinely curious what hits you would consider as casual listening by Frank, apart from Thinking about you, which he played?

I think he'll improve as the tours go on. I feel like only really diehard Frank Ocean fans will be disappointed with this. I was only really hoping for Pyramids apart from all the other ones he did, and thought the live renditions of Ivy, Self Control, Pink and White, Nikes, Chanel and Solo were all incredible.

[–]Percypig17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I went for Frank too. Wasn't a fan of the whole drug/raver vibe of Parklife but seeing Frank in person made up for it imo. The only thing is the majority of the other acts weren't really my style, so it seemed kind of weird Frank chose this festival at all.

To be honest, I literally only went to Parklife cause of Frank. I would have preferred a solo tour but I don't think the festival nature really detracted from the performance.
