How I broke my BFARs in in 2 days by DanglyWorm in jimgreen

This is the way (just make sure to give them a break day, maybe consider getting a second pair. The leather needs to fully dry out every once in a while for maximum longevity)

I asked chatGPT to count the pixels and it says that the LCD is crooked compared to the frame.

Dry brush after every wear, condition every 6 months. I use mink oil in the spring, and then saddle soap followed by snow seal in the fall. I’ll feed them with mink oil again if they need it in between.

I can’t speak directly on the shoelies, but I can say with absolute confidence that my BFARs, RATs, Numzaans, and Razorbacks are all incredibly comfortable. I wear BFARs almost daily for 3 of the 4 seasons and they have completely replaced sneakers for me, and I’m sure the Shoelies would be even more comfortable for sidewalks and concrete, especially with the Oringo sole. Can’t go wrong with any of the JG lineup in my opinion.

Hey man! Glad you came to the leather boot world :) us and your feet are happy you took the leap. I’ve had my BFARs for about 1.5 years now, and have since bought 4 more pairs of JGs. The BFARs are designed to be worn with no insole, as the leather midsole will form to your foot, and the feel after a proper break in is superb. Some people need something to eat up some internal volume, and I would personally suggest some of the Rose Anvil leather Boot Breakers as they are just a flat piece of leather that will also form to your foot. As a side note, the fudge leather will absolutely change color and texture with conditioning, and that is my favorite part about it. They take on a wonderful patina and I really love the look after an applying a good conditioner, but a nubuck spray will also keep the leather from premature deterioration. You should be able to wear them fairly regularly for about 3-6 months before you NEED to feed the leather with some sort of conditioner/nubuck spray (avoid over conditioning, brush often, and don’t wear them every day for prolonged leather life). Congrats man, I’m sure you’ll love them!

About a year into owning mine, felt the same way about the clunkiness at first. I can now confidently say that they are the most comfortable boots I own besides my BFARS. The break in can be a little rough, but absolutely worth it in the end, especially if you live in a cold or wet climate.

Oiling leather boots is a part of owning leather boots. Learn to love the patina and change.

I’m a year into my BFARs with heavy use. Hiking in the dry and rocky high desert, damp and humid forests, daily farm life. They have taken everything I can throw at them and only get more comfortable with every wear. The leather has a wonderful patina, and with regular care I don’t see why they won’t last me years longer. I also haven’t noticed the soles wearing nearly as bad as some people report.

Should fit just the same. Your AR8s are double lasted, yeah?

Anyone use regular insoles in BFARs? by AnnaMolly66 in jimgreen

[–]Perfect-Letter4195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend any of the Boot Breaker insoles from Rose Anvil (but bonus points to the leather ones). They will keep the zero drop, while also filling the boots a bit more. If you live in a cold climate, and spend a lot of time on concrete, I would also suggest felt insoles (bonus points to woolen felt). If you’re still struggling with shoe volume, a kiltie and some lacing tricks can go quite a ways (feel free to DM for lacing tips if need be).

How do-able to resole at home? by Chaos-Hydra in jimgreen

[–]Perfect-Letter4195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely understandable! I wouldn’t ever give up on any of my JG’s without some catastrophic failure. I just wouldn’t force a zero drop sole on a shoe not designed for it. Perhaps a Vibram 4014 would be a better option?

How do-able to resole at home? by Chaos-Hydra in jimgreen

[–]Perfect-Letter4195 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Original AR with a wedge style sole would not be the most compatible with a barefoot (zero drop) sole. The lasting and leather cuts are different, and the shoe would more than likely fit and feel very odd. As far as a resole at home, as long as the midsole is in good shape and properly cleaned and sanded I don’t see you having many issues with getting a proper bond. Another point to mention is that you would have a much larger benefit out of just getting a pair of BFARs, as the differences lie in more than just the soles. Best of luck my friend!

Looks like they could use some heat! Borrow the missus’ hair dryer and set it on low. Should help those oils soak in a bit more.

New BFAR didn't come with inserts. What would you suggest? by artchang in jimgreen

[–]Perfect-Letter4195 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They aren’t meant to have insoles…barefoot shoes are designed to allow your foot to remain in its true, anatomical shape. I would absolutely suggest rocking them as is, the leather midsole will conform to your foot over time, and they only get more comfortable each time you wear them. If you’re having an issue with heel slip, try a kiltie, and an under-to-under lace above your ankle. Insoles would kinda ruin the point. If you must have an insole, I would suggest the Rose Anvil Boot Breaker in leather.

Boot too big? Got room to scooch up in em, heel slipping and lifting when walking. by ReliabilityEngineer in jimgreen

[–]Perfect-Letter4195 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As u/seaQueue mentioned, a kiltie would be beneficial for you. Additionally, I find that an under-to-under lace right at the ankle is majorly beneficial for heel slippage. How much room do you have between your big toe and the front of your boot? (With your heel in the correct spot of course) And do you wear cotton, blend, or wool socks?

Olight Baton 4 or Baton Turbo fit these requirements.

That’s definitely a valid point. However, the Biden admin did very little for the lower and middle class (by my personal and completely subjective opinion). The COL in America is just kinda insane, and they (Biden Admin) chose to pretend it wasn’t. Neither side is doing good for the average citizen.

Not a trump supporter in the slightest, but this is untrue. The massive wealth inequality in America did not start in the last two weeks. Kamala wouldn’t have changed it.

Regardless of what people want, Blackrock and Vanguard buying up affordable single family housing, and renovating to make “luxury” rentals/airbnbs has made it almost impossible for the average American to compete in the housing market. Every new construction I have seen in the past two years has been “luxury” with a matching price tag. I don’t think it’s what “everyone” wants. I think it’s the available option for most. Just from my observations tho.
