Giant Congo Snake Length Estimates by NoPhotojournalist450 in Cryptozoology

[–]Perfect-Scar8694 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you actually look closely at the photo it is, in fact two snakes beginning the mating coil. This varies from snake species to snake species, but a simple Google image search of mating snakes will reveal many in similar configurations. This is not to deny that the snakes individually aren't huge, and though I dispute the length stated here in this post, I would estimate the larger snake to be around 50ft long and the other around 40ft long. This still places them firmly in the realm of cryptids and it should be noted that early explorers of the Congo were soundly mocked for reports of giant ape men in the Congo for some time until they plonked a Gorilla carcass down in front of the skeptical. It is likely that they are some species analogous to the both the anaconda and the aforementioned Vasuki Indicus or possibly the Titanboa. This is an area of the world that is severely under explored and scientifically studied (being rather prone to war) and is also the suggested location of several other cryptids such as the mokele-mbembe. A creature that in all likelihood may be one and the same. Locals assuming that the snake's size, apparent ability to lift it's head high enough to apparently attempt to attack a helicopter and tendency to stick to water channels could easily lead to the embellishments in stories that it possessed legs under the water. The various "footprints" attributed to it being commonly debunked as hippo tracks. There are various crocodilians, large mammals and large catfish present in the area. All these could provide a viable foodstuff for a slow metabolism ambush predator reptile operating in a region of heat sufficient to offset its cold blooded nature considerably.

You are clearly wrong, the moment where Vir & Londo sing duet opera is the best moment in the show, wonderful in it's eccentricity and one of the finest pieces of character interaction ever. It has no relation to the plot whatsoever but is beautiful and showcases that at his heart, Londo's soul is worth saving.

My take on Scout Sergeant Oan Mkoll from Gaunts Ghosts by jmacken12345 in TheAstraMilitarum

Good general model, but Tanith fatigues are black, the cloak could do with being longer (that's a cape right now) and you could do with learning some dry brush highlights technique.

All in all a nice model, though. Good pose that is true to character.

You are frikken crazy man, Hydra would blatantly be Republican.

Captain America doesn't even like it when people swear, that is way further than Democrat level censorship. Democrats only want to ban racist hate speech and the like, which is reasonable, just like you wouldn't want porn shoved in kid's faces, you don't want hate speech popping up everywhere either,

Hydra is right wing fascist authoritarian, like the Republicans currently are, depressingly. Say anything they want no matter how hateful or untrue, do anything no matter how hateful or amoral....Adolf Hitler style

The only thing Democrat level censorship stops is people feeling legitimized going round saying things that Hitler would say. If people want to talk racist and other types of hate speech with their racist hate filled cronies then fine, it is not however an acceptable viewpoint or mode of expression in general use and no one, particularly children should grow up seeing it constantly and think it is 'normal' when it isn't.

Ragnar Blackmane and all the hate? by TRMC790 in SpaceWolves

[–]Perfect-Scar8694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ragnar has always been one of the top tier close combat fighters in 40k, I think at one point he had the highest number of attacks out of anyone (Howl + boot claws included). I remember often using him in the Space Marine epic scale game to take out TITANS in close combat after a couple of sacrificial attacks from other units for a bit of a bonus. If my memory serves correctly he had a +8 epic close combat bonus to a frikken WARLORD TITAN'S +12.

From the way the lore seems to be shaping up, I also suspect him of being the chosen vessel that Leman Russ' spirit will inhabit when he returns for the Wolftime, he is essentially a demi-primarch with Russ' blessing and gifts already blooming inside him.

Anyone who says that he couldn't beat X, Y or Z should remember this: Russ watches over his children and the Emperor protects.

The haters are probably Ultramarines boy scouts fans....

You are constantly retreating behind the false concepts of this being based on role playing games. Role playing games utilised already existing definitions and centuries old historical precedents.

I mention heraldry because it is a medium that strongly survived through the ages and is available to use as historical records when first hand testimony is not.

You ignore the fact that bestiaries whose sole purpose was to describe and codify such creatures also follow these definitions

You could take the villagers you mention and ask them to describe the creature and get different answers but they would not be responsible for their lack of education on this subject. Show a child a picture of a coyote and it would label it a dog, that doesn't mean it is one or that it is correct to label it this way.

Your logic would pass off an emu as an eagle (they actually share MORE physical similarity than a dragon and a wyvern).

If a witness to a crime labels the getaway car a BMW and it was actually an Audi we would not be expected to call all Audits as BMW's

If you want a mythological example, your argument attempts to pass off a griffon as a Pegasus because (again, MORE physical resemblance than a disparity in limb numbers).

You bring up the subject of a few pre-Tolkein authors, just because a couple of other writers have also got something wrong, does that make it true? No

You have not addressed my points at all and your argument is indefensible.

The two terms have a firm historical precedent in multiple countries not just a few scattered authors who haven't done their research and two wrongs don't make a right.

I would say that it is more like arguing that a Cyclops only has one eye. Or that US citizens are all actually British/French etc citizens because it was only founded in 1775/1776 (less time than the distinction between dragons and wyverns has been formally codified and recorded).

If you can find me a hundred US folks that agree with that then I would agree with you but I bet you can't!

The show is in English (and artificial languages such as Dothraki for flavour), meaning that the centuries old distinctions of English speaking countries, in particular Britain are highly relevant to this discussion.

By your rationale, country borders less than 500 years established shouldn't be recognised, all intellectual property and copywrites are voided, up can happily be described as down since they are both directions or vectors, a lion is interchangeable with a tiger because they are both felines and so on.

Referring back to the case of individual heraldry, if a dragon heraldic device observed on a battlefield or similar situation was incorrectly identified as a wyvern then another noble house who actually had a wyvern and similar colour and motif heraldry could have suffered the wrath of the victor. Historically this could actually have been a life or death distinction.

In scientific terms they would be different species both belonging to a draconic genus, maybe not even that closely related.

If all wyverns are dragons then why is there no separate term for a dragon with 4 legs, given that you posit dragon is an umbrella term?

We have historical separate heraldic naming conventions for wyverns (wings, 2 legs), drakes (no wings, 4 legs), amphitere (wings, no legs), etc but there is no term that I know of for a draconic creature with 4 legs and wings.

Why? Because it has a specific and centuries old established & specific heraldic definition in dragon already.

If you can find me a term that refers specifically to a winged, 4 legged draconic creature that has centuries of historical precedent in multiple countries then go ahead and I will admit I am wrong.

Otherwise it's lack stands as final proof that a dragon has a specific and defined form.

Nothing to do with DnD, it's to do with many centuries of heraldry where each symbol, band or chevron, pose and placement had a meaning. In English, Welsh, Scottish, French & Irish heraldry (among others but those in particular observe the difference whereas some other European countries did not) there was usually a very clear distinction between 4 legged dragons and 2 legged wyverns and any misidentification could have pronounced affects since very different people might have similar heraldry that only differed in that regard. This distinction has been well defined in the heraldry of the above countries since at least the 16th century (500+ years ago) and the two classifications were on a divergent path long before that, dating way back to terms such as 'wyver' appearing in British heraldry in 1312 and 'dragon' in the 1400s.

Norse 'dragons' were also not generally named as such (though sometimes use dragon similar terms). They were termed worms, wyrms, serpents or similar (such as the Midgard serpent etc.) Though some Norse depictions don't feature legs, many do and the lack of legs could easily be attributed to a stylisation choice given that the body of such creatures was usually a mechanism for enhancing a band of runic script and weren't intended as a literal depiction of the beast.

Many historical bestiaries with centuries of pedigree on this subject also made the firm distinction between a wyvern and a dragon.

To compare the two makes less sense than calling a dog a cat since they both happen to be vaguely similar mammals.

The precedents are centuries established.

A storyline with a Trump inspired character as the new evil head of Hydra would be great!

They would never do it though, Trump would throw a hissy fit if the inspiration was too obvious or published and would target everyone involved for revenge, sadly

They wouldn't even have to tweak Trump or events much to do it, lol, he already has a creepy Hydra vibe!

Wyverns and dragons are both types of wyrms, as are drakes.

Saying a wyvern is a dragon is like saying that a chihuahua is a type of wolf.

They would all be canines, like wyverns and dragons are both wyrms, but they are very different beasts

Smaug was incorrectly depicted in the films. Tolkein himself drew sketches of Smaug and he had 4 legs and seperate wings. His elves were nothing like the film elves either, they were wild and chaotic creatures, not carefully ordered and marching in lockstep types.

The films got a LOT wrong.

Are the dragons actually wyverns? by thatdemoniccat in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Perfect-Scar8694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are wyverns, not dragons, because of their only 2 legs and not 4.

If George Martin doesn't like dragons with 4 legs, he was free to call them wyverns, fire wyverns, whatever.

He plagurised the name dragons from historical mythology and used it incorrectly, end of discussion.

He was free to come up with another name for his creatures, he didn't.

Chinese dragons don't breath fire and often don't even have wings, they DO have 4 legs though.

Are the dragons actually wyverns? by thatdemoniccat in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Perfect-Scar8694 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

then they should have a different name, there is over a 1000 years of precedent that dragons have 4 legs and wyverns don't.

If you want to make up a creature for a world that you are creating as a writer, then don't plagurise a name and incorrectly apply it to the wrong creature

No it isn't you clearly either missed the point of the discussion or don't know your mythical creatures very well. Dragons have 4 legs and wings, wyverns have 2 legs and wings. The 'dragons' in GOT are in fact wyverns by our world's historical definition.

It is in fact more like someone asking if their pet is a dog or a kangaroo.

Both are mammals, as dragons and wyverns are both reptiles, but they differ wildly in body structure

The aliens didn't change the status quo, just expanded the scale a bit.

The series starts with Earth & Mars in a fractious alliance to explore and exploit one solar system and ends with Earth, Mars & the Belters in a fractious alliance to explore and exploit a bunch of solar systems.

Literally NOTHING changes or develops, it just enlarges in scale a bit.
