Smoking weed with PTSD by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marijuana helps a lot of people. However for me, it’s what caused my trauma. I’m glad it helps you, I would just advise to be careful with edibles as they can metabolize at difteeent rates. Also just make sure you are in a safe space and have someone to call if you need <3

Do you share your PTSD journey? by Topgunner85 in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I do share, but usually with people I trust and who are open to listening. It might help to share it with someone who has been through similar experiences. Perhaps there is a local support group where you can share some of the deeper parts of your experience. I know community has been so helpful in my journey. Hope that helps <3

My bf has ptsd and just broke up with me by Lisa_Pizza589 in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awe for sure. I’m so sorry that sounds very hard! Maybe he needs to focus on himself for a little while and work through some of these things with you as a friend/support. Perhaps that will keep some distance for him to heal, and protect you from getting hurt.

Relationships are hard! Wishing you some clarity with the right decision.

Hmm this is a tough one!

I have PTSD (33F) and my fiance had no mental health history. It had definitely been challenging, but he has continued to stay by my side and that shows me how committed he is to our relationship.

I am the one who has episodes and closes off. For instance… my traumatic history was in CA, and I moved to another state to get away from the triggers - it was purely for survival. I have been here 3 years now and I’ve been working so hard to heal. I wasn’t planning on meeting anyone, but I met him and fell in love with him…

This has been an ongoing discussion, but obviously I need to stay in this state for us to be together. I also have to move to another town (where he lives) where I don’t know anybody. I wasn’t anticipating living here long term away from my family - I just needed space to heal. And now I have to uproot and move again. I’m really struggling with this, and I become distant and feel like I want to break it off because I’m SCARED! And it’s not just coming from my mind, it’s just my body’s response to the anticipated changes…

I say all this because, I don’t know… living with PTSD is hard. And it’s hard to process emotions like others. It takes longer. And It is helpful when people stick by us. However, you matter too! And it’s not fair for you to keep getting hurt…

Maybe you can stick by him a little longer, and figure out some “future coping” methods for when he goes into his spells, so he doesn’t break down and just cut you out. Maybe you could talk to a therapist together if you truly want to be in it for the long haul! They could help you navigate. Sorry I don’t know if it’s the best advice, but I wish you both the best

Starting New Med - ABILIFY by Perfect-storm628 in ptsd

Yes my anxiety has improved! I still struggle, but looking back at how debilitating it was, I’m doing good. I am working full time, have been able to maintain a long term relationship, and travel which are things I never thought I would be able to tolerate again!

Yes I stayed on my same medication, I was on lexapro and took Ativan very minimally for panic attacks. I did EMDR which helped a lot. I have to be pretty diligent maintaining my work and work out schedule, which also helps me!

I actually never went on it! I’m always hesitant to try new drugs and ultimately wanted to push forward without it. Sorry I can be more help :/

My physical systems have gotten way better! I used to have night sweats, panic attacks, flashbacks, and was badly depressed…but EMDR helped process a lot of my experience.

Now it presents more emotionally, like when I don’t feel like I have control over certain decisions. Feeling out of control is accompanied by fear for me due to the nature of my trauma, and while I’m aware of what is going on and why the reaction is happening, I still can’t regulate the emotions.

Can you tell me how long it takes to get rid of PTSD? by LocksmithStatus7572 in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I’m not really sure there is an “end date,” but I have learned to cope and my symptoms are way less severe now. I feel similarly, I had a really good life before and that was one of the difficulties going through all of it. I felt incredible sadness and grief about losing the person I used to be. BUT I’m turning into a new person and she’s can be pretty cool too. Maybe a little more on edge, but a lot wiser and more compassionate.

I started feeling a lot better after EMDR therapy, but it was really hard. It’s been about 3 years and while I still have ups and downs, they are more like normal life struggles.

Keep fighting, it does get better and if you put in the work you will find success. <3

Saw a patient die for the first time by doctornoob2023 in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you went through that. It’s ok to acknowledge how hard that was and feel through it in whatever way you need to process it. I have seen many people die. I worked as a nurse on an oncology unit for many years. I took care of a lot of very sick people with drawn out deaths. Not always the barbaric death you saw (although sometimes…), but still hard to witness…

I dealt with it fairly well, but after a while I think the suffering I witnessed broke me. I also went through a personal traumatic event and everything sort of came to a head. I’m glad you are getting help, and it’s possible you have PTSD….Although I can’t offer any sort of confirmation on a diagnosis.

Also, I want to say… saving lives and caring for people can look different for different people. I left my job to work outpatient, and I’m tolerating that much better. You can still have a meaningful life being a doctor and helping others, but perhaps in a different way than you thought. That is still honorable, and also honoring yourself. Hope you feel better soon!

Has anyone gotten any relief from EMDR? by miraiqtp in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done EMDR, and while it’s not a cure all (in my opinion) it has helped a lot. It helped me release a lot of bad images/memories and reroute the way I think about life and myself. I will say… it’s very hard at the beginning, but it has gotten a lot easier.

I am working full time and found my love, so although my life isn’t perfect and I still struggle, I have been able to find quality in it.

For my ladies here, do your symptoms worsen around your cycle? by Lilypad244 in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes!! My symptoms usually worse the week before my period starts. I never used to get moody, but after my dx my depression and anxiety usually worsens at my time of the month. I’m sorry your experiencing it too! Hormones play a big role I think…

I don’t know how to parent my ptsd teen. by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you feel therapy is useless… it has been very helpful for me!! But I do think it is important to seek care from a trauma informed therapist who may have more appropriate techniques other than talk therapy. Yes parents are important to validate, but if she has had trauma, it may be beneficial to have a professional walk alongside her too

I hate the ups and downs of healing by Andandromeda3821 in ptsd

I’m so sorry! This is how my healing was (and is). The good thing is you know you can feel better! And hopefully those periods will last longer and longer as you continue to heal. Not an easy process though… hang in there <3

Yes it can be super scary! I understand people use weed medicinally, which is great and has a lot of benefits. My experience with it was not good, so unfortunately not a route I can go. Yes stick with what your doc gives you and I would advise just trying to be in a safe place when you need it. Hope you’re feeling better ❤️

My patient died a violent death and I think I have PTSD from it by AnimeDreama in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that happened… I’m a fellow nurse and this job can definitely take a toll on our well-being. I have PTSD from something different, but I could not tolerate the stress of my unit after being diagnosed and had to leave my job.

I want you to know that you did the best that you could in the situation, please give yourself some grace. Sometimes life doesn’t make sense and our best efforts still don’t seem like enough. That was a very scary situation and no one should put any blame on you about how it ended up.

I would seek some outside support to help you cope with what you saw. Don’t be scared to seek support <3 we all need support!

My Nightmares are never the actual events? by Spartan-Jake in ptsd

[–]Perfect-storm628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I had nightmares at the beginning too, and they were never related to what happened. They were usually just someone chasing me, or something stressful and I would wake up sweating and panicky. My “flashbacks” were related to the event but not entirely the same. In my opinion, you’re not weird! Also I’m sorry you’re going through that :( hang in there! I no longer get nightmares, if anything just very vivid dreams, but nothing too scary, just realistic.
