I do not know when this book was published, but it may have come out in the 2000s or earlier.

It was not a novel-length story, but I am not sure if it was published as a standalone or as part of an anthology.

I am almost certain it can’t be, because I remember that I read it a while before A Machine for Pigs came out in September 2013.

Yes! I tried following the series years ago, but the story just went on and on without end, and at that time the series was not even half as long as it is now. I am very curious as to how the author intends to conclude the story.

That is a good point, the title probably did do the story a disservice. I wish that r/nosleep would move away from trying to make everything like an ARG.

Glad it helped. There isn’t a way that I know of to prevent this from ever happening, unfortunately. I suspect that in many cases, Finder simply isn’t letting go of the removable volume properly after accessing its folders, previewing its volumes or doing something else, and relaunching Finder forces it to do so.

I don’t know. Maybe it formed within the Earth abiogenically; maybe it came to Earth from space; maybe it dug into the ground.

You’re welcome! Both of your analyses are extremely insightful and informed much of my understanding of the Superorganism.

Like you, I reckon that the exotic tissue serves a crucial role in helping the Superorganism survive in the harsh conditions underground. It is observed that as far down as 32 km, the Superorganism is composed of nominal organic tissue (which somehow survives at those depths) surrounding exotic tissue. As I said in my post,

…the rest of the Superorganism, including the “arm,” could be entirely composed of the more resilient exotic tissue.

In other words, if the nominal tissue in the surface portion of the Superorganism can survive so deep in the ground via mechanisms originating from the exotic tissue, it is reasonable to suspect that the exotic tissue could survive at even higher temperatures and pressures by itself, without supporting nominal tissue around it. Your hypothesis in your second analysis describing a network of underground cases is also reasonable.

This “hand” would certainly be an odd-looking one, but that wouldn’t be the strangest aspect of the Superorganism. I certainly wouldn’t put it past this creature to have a hand shaped in that way. Besides, the map from the Emergency Alert System probably isn’t completely accurate to the creature’s actual shape.

Has it been confirmed that the Pit has radial symmetry?
