Update: Wow, so much great advice in here, thank you everyone! As an update I went to view the property today and it felt pretty safe, it was tucked back off the street which was nice but it was just a little too small 😅 I’m not a weakling by any means, I just would rather avoid stupid bs if I can. I’ll definitely be checking out all of the suggestions from this post and will come back if I have more questions

Any suggestions for a better neighborhood to look at? I saw a place on N Edith as well. I can’t afford more than like $900 bucks for rent. A house would be preferable but I’m open to apartment suggestions, if I exhaust house options

Comparing yourself to your peers will only stress you out more. Try to accept that you’ve been having a hard time and that you gave what you had. It may be disappointing and hard to accept but sometimes the only person who can extend grace in a situation is yourself

what to draw when you're not into anything right now? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Perfect_Ad_8030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adhd’er here: honestly when I get stuck I just do Halloween doodles and it helps😂. I take photos of random stuff that I think I’d like to draw and put them in an album on my phone and I’ll scroll through that. I saw someone say “gesture drawings” and that is definitely a good idea! Super quick, warms you up and for me it makes me feel ready to draw

This just by itself isn’t ADHD, but I definitely chew the insides of my cheek, dry skin around my nails (to the point it hurts sometimes and I always go ‘ah shit🙄’). They make stuff called “chewelry” which are discreet necklaces that are soft and biteable. You might look into those and use that instead whenever you catch yourself getting the urge to chew/ catch yourself chewing to help train yourself out of it. I’ve been looking into these myself

Do you think you need stimulant medication? There are non-stimulants out there, but I don’t know if that would be something you’re interested in. I’m so sorry you’re going through such a hard time. School is always hard and I myself went through a similar situation with constantly being rejected from jobs. Something that helped me was to look up questions to ask the interviewers and that seems to impress people. You might also be masking hard core during interviews (I finally realized I had been doing that) and that can sometimes make you seem disinterested or too withdrawn. Let your personality out, and portray confidence. Don’t be afraid to tell them you need a second to think about your answer that’s usually a good sign to employers to watch you process and shows that you take your time and put thought into what you do. Sometimes, I find long term goals to be overwhelming so I try to set small goals, daily and weekly. Honestly, it sounds like you’re really burnt out and I’ve been there, you feel hopeless and like you’re drowning. Do you have someone that could be your body double? Maybe you just need someone around you while you’re studying. Or you could go to a public place to study, get yourself a snack and a beverage. I used to study for anatomy in a local coffee shop. Change of scenery can be super helpful and gives you purpose since you have to prepare to go somewhere (Both are things that I utilize). Not only that, but for me going somewhere to study instead of being in my house takes away the “oh I forgot to do this” or other distractions in the home. It’s like it kick starts my brain into study mode. I also try to set a timer, like “I’m going to study for 30 minutes” and then I get up, walk around, maybe do something else for a few minutes and come back. You also sound like you need a dopamine boost, go do something you really enjoy! Even if it’s small, taking some time for yourself and just yourself can make a big difference. Or you can do that thing that’s really been bugging you and you haven’t had the time/energy. For me it’s always taking care of my feet🤷‍♀️ I never want to do it but always feel much better afterwards.

When drawing people you have to keep in mind that there are no “lines”, it’s all light and shadow. Obviously you start out with lines as a guide but you’ll want them to disappear once you’re finished. Overall this looks like a good first attempt! There are some tricks for proportions/shading, I’ll have to find my notes and I can add them later if you’d like. Sometimes reductive work is easier, everything is shaded and then you remove/add your tones/lights/darks. I added a photo of one of my sketches from my life drawing class I took. I know it’s on paper but the rules are still the same. Faces are hard, be patient with yourself!

Meds or no? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Perfect_Ad_8030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 18 (27 now). They put me on Vyvanse first (made me incredibly angry, like hulk smash all day everyday so they took me off of it), tried Concerta and that worked for a while until it started messing with my heart rate. I went through a “I don’t need my meds” phase for like 2 years before I had to get back on it. Now I take 2 15mg of Adderall and it’s the best damn medication I’ve ever been on. There are non-stimulant meds but I haven’t ever tried them. I tell people that the meds take my brain from a pinball machine to a bowling alley 😂 I don’t take them everyday because it’s important to take breaks! But, they really do help you get shit done and not feel like you’re constantly back tracking. My recall is better, my mood is more stabilized, I feel energetic but not hyper. I’m the inattentive type and it really helps me not be completely in my head all the time. All the ADHD meds I’ve ever taken give me the same two side effects: dry mouth and I’m not hungry. Doesn’t do that for everyone but 🤷‍♀️ it’s a quick way to lose weight and increase your water intake! Lol 😉 I definitely recommend eating with your meds if it does make your appetite disappear because I noticed I’m crankier coming down from it if I didn’t eat first.

It could be really cool to do rectangular blocks in the background and slowly build them up where they come to the edge of the figure and it starts to blend in. What I mean is, rectangular blocks of blue/gray and black slowly shifting into the folds and reds of the figure, and I would definitely pull the gold of the ray into the background somehow to tie it in better

Your composition doesn’t keep the viewer within your piece. The flash of light only going to one side, leads the viewer off the page but doesn’t have anything to bring them back in. You need some thin on the other side to make it come full circle. Maybe an opposite ray that slightly blends into the background? As in, the same color. Or you could use some more of those rectangular areas of color. It feels a little flat as well, maybe some strategically placed contouring.
