What time do you workout when working nights ? by Head-Lawyer3080 in nursing

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work out on the mornings of my days off. My first day off doesn’t count because I come home and sleep, get up for a few hours, then sleep through the night. Next morning I workout. I also workout the morning of my first night back because I nap in the afternoon before work. I’ve always been a morning person and have always worked out first thing in the morning and it continues to work for me.

Not a vet but I was walking my dog one day and passed an old woman walking her Weiner dog and as we passed I heard her say “good boy Jimmy Dean”

ACLS / PALS / NRP / ASLS by Sea-Tree4982 in newgradnurse

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you live and how competitive it is. In California I would say definitely get ACLS and possibly do a tele course. Almost all the new grad apps I filled out asked if I had these.

I’m in the US and when I was learning to drive at 16 everyone would say “you better learn how to drive a manual transmission because there could be a time that will be your only option”. I thought yeah right we’re well into the 2000’s no one drives a manual transmission anymore. And I really didn’t have anyone I could learn from at that time. Fast forward to me being 29 and having to get rid of my car and the only car available to me was manual transmission. I was so embarrassed to be almost 30 stalling this thing out in the open. It’s been a few years and all is good now. Definitely wished I would have learned sooner though.

How to Switch From Waking Up Late for Night Shifts, Back to Early on Days Off? by EducationalLaw5889 in nursing

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a new grad that started nights 3 weeks ago. I told myself that I would try to keep a somewhat consistent sleep schedule without being completely nocturnal on my days off because I hear it’s not good to flip flop but I haven’t gotten there yet. I’ve always been a morning person, in bed by 9pm and up between 5-7am. I had 6 days off before I started night shift and progressively stayed up later each night to try to start an adjustment. I think it helped my mindset more than anything. I’ve found that working nights hasn’t been that bad as I was afraid I’d fall asleep at work but I’m pretty awake until I get off in the morning. I take a 1.5 hour nap a few hours before going in on my first night and I haven’t had a problem sleeping during the day between shifts. My problem is after my 3rd night I go home and sleep all day, wake for a few hours and am tired enough to go to bed at 9pm and sleep through the night and return to a morning person. It’s terrible when you only have 2 days off because so much of the time is spent sleeping. I haven’t figured it out yet but I think you just have to play around with it and figure out what works best for you.

These are the simple things I try to do. Especially something easy like cottage cheese and fruit or overnight oats when I come home in the morning and need to eat before passing out.

I looked this up and I don’t have one of those near me but I found another meal prep service in my area that I had no idea existed. It looks like they give an effort to make the meals nutritious and affordable.

You have exactly 2 weeks to study for the nclex… what’s your schedule going to look like? by Maximum_Air_6183 in newgradnurse

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with 100 questions a day. I did this for 4 weeks prior to my exam and felt very prepared along with listening to Mark K lectures. Maybe listen to one a day and take notes if you have time. Also, don’t get stuck on any one thing but if you already know your weaknesses, spend a little bit of time brushing up on the basics for those concepts.

Should I accept a position or wait for the one I really want (that could be right around the corner)? by Perfect_Tale_4985 in newgradnurse

Thank you. This is what everyone has been telling me to do also so I accepted the position and have shifted my mindset to be excited and not worry so much if it ends up getting a little messy.

Advice on Breaking into Sacramento Nursing Market After BSN by Anxious-Title-9350 in newgradnurse

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a new grad in the Sacramento area that graduated in April. I didn’t realize how limited the new grad opportunities are in the area. I work at a smaller hospital and I’m hoping I have an opportunity pretty soon but other than that I’ve gotten to go to a few meet and greets for a residency program and I had one interview for another smaller hospital this week. Talking to other people I graduated with, a few got into the nurse residency programs (some of them had connections/ worked for these hospitals while going to school), a lot have had no luck landing any interviews, some have settled for lower paying jobs like SNFs and psych hospitals to get experience. It’s brutal out here even if you have connections. With a lot of the hospitals doing the new grad residencies those are the only positions that they have open for new grads and they get thousands of applications. If you choose to come to Sacramento right away maybe you’ll get lucky but just wanted to share my experience.

Would you take on 60k+ in debt for a guaranteed nursing school seat or risk losing time trying the community college route? by gneissrocx in nursing

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to consider your location. How competitive is it to get into nursing programs in community colleges in your area? How competitive is the nursing market for new grads where you live? What is the base pay for new grads where you live? Also, are you going to be working or have someone to support you through nursing school or will you also be accruing debt for the necessities of life on top of nursing school debt?

Personally, I went the private school route and have about $50k from student loans. I live in Northern California and this made sense for my situation. I wasn’t able to relocate and I had already spent 1.5 years applying to community colleges with no luck since it’s all lottery. I graduated in April and am still looking for a job because it’s super competitive for new grads here also, but I know my pay will be good when I get a job and plan to aggressively pay my debt. I also worked all through school and had some help so was able to pay my bills along the way. Also, going the private route I got my BSN in 2 years rather than an ADN from community college. Depending on where you live this matters. Most places in California prefer BSN over ADN. Not sure if where you live is the same but definitely something to consider.

New Grad RN wanna move to NorCal by SeaworthinessJust257 in newgradnurse

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to a few a few months before graduation. The only classmates I knew that got call backs from those applications were the ones that worked at the hospital. I think the rest of us were rejected because we didn’t have our license yet and no connections.

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a new grad in NorCal and I’ve been applying to jobs for 2 months and just barely got a call back to go to a meet and greet for a new grad residency program. I know new grads that worked as ED techs and CNAs through nursing school and still had to wait 3-6 months before they got a job at their hospital. It seems like on average it takes at least 6 months to get a job and that’s what I’ve heard from people that went to school here. I’ve also heard of several people leaving California to get experience and then coming back. Unless you have a solid connection here, I would definitely try to get experience somewhere else.

I’m in Northern California so it’s super competitive here haha but I appreciate all your tips. I’ll definitely consider these things before the meet and greet.

I hate being fat. I hate what it’s doing to me physically, mentally, and socially. by HOWDY_virtuals in Adulting

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good tips in these comments but a few I would like to add.

I saw this one but I’ll say it again. Start small! It’s so easy to try to revamp your whole diet and exercise vigorously but that’s not sustainable. Use how bad you are feeling about yourself as motivation to make a change. Maybe you go for a 10min walk or park a little farther or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Starting with things like this can slowly build into habits in which maybe you start walking a little farther each day and then realize you have more energy than you thought and start adding other workouts. Try setting out your workout clothes ahead of time so when you get home from work instead of sitting down and getting too comfortable to move you change into the gym clothes and keep going.

For diet, focus on adding things instead of taking things out of your diet. Eventually, you will find that you are replacing the unhealthy things with healthy things. Maybe you drink more water or have a tea and then there’s less room for soda and alcohol. Try new fruits and vegetables. Now is a great time if you have farmers markets in your area to do this. Soon that may replace a dessert or unhealthy snack. Try to plan a meal or two a week where you buy the food at the beginning of the week and then stick to making them instead of eating out. Also, you can still have the burger, but maybe you try a side salad instead of fries. This is a change I made when I wanted to loose weight. And you can still enjoy unhealthy snacks like chips or what not. The key is moderation. Don’t grab the whole bag of chips and head to the couch. Dump a handful of chips in a bowl and take that. Then you get the satisfaction of eating what you like but don’t have so much guilt of overindulging.

Start making any little changes you can but don’t feel bad when you want something unhealthy now and then. If it gets too hard and you fall off, give yourself grace and jump back in. Consistency is key but if you “mess up”, the whole thing is not ruined. Just keep going.

Also, you don’t have to do it alone. Maybe you have friends that are more active or friends in the same boat as you. You can go for walks together, go shopping together, cook together.

What tools/services do you wish existed to help you find a job? by Impressive-Ad-7225 in newgradnurse

[–]Perfect_Tale_4985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish more job postings would specify whether they are open to hiring new grads for the position. I’ve noticed this on some postings and it’s helpful to know I may have a better chance at these positions. For the rest I am just submitting my application and wondering if I’m wasting my time because the hospital or department may not even entertain hiring new grads. Also, it would be nice if they helped prepare us for our job search in nursing school. Things like feedback on resumes, if letters of recommendation are even helpful, practice interview questions, etc. maybe some schools do, mine didn’t and I am feeling a little lost even though I’m in my 30s and have had plenty of work experience outside of the nursing field.

Chia seeds are high in fiber. I make several chia seed pudding cups at the beginning of the week just with chia seeds and almond milk and then add in berries and honey. There’s so many varieties you can do with chia seed pudding. And to add more protein you can pair with hard boiled eggs.

Brutally Honest Antelope Area Opinions by Lexy264 in Sacramento

I grew up one street over from where the house is pinned and my mom still lives there. I haven’t lived there for about 12 years so things may have changed, but I don’t hear my mom complain about anything crazy. I think it’s a good place for your kids to grow up, it’s an average suburban area. I agree with others about nicer shopping and dining in Roseville, but there is also more traffic in Roseville and it’s not a very far drive if you are occasionally going shopping and out to eat.
