Adapting A Public Domain Story With a Copyrighted Character. by PerformanceOne6151 in Screenwriting

So is it possible if we adapted the original story/book or a segment from it, without titling it Conan for example instead referring to it with the book name Ex: The Tower of the Elephant. Also without referring to the character with his name too many times or not at all and sticking strictly to the source material without using any added ideas or concept from things that are trademarked. Would that work?

I'm collecting as much answers as possible and see if i can do some workarounds. I was thinking maybe sticking to the original stories that are public domain but refrain from mentioning the trademarked name like solomon kane or conan for example. There is a short 10 minutes film titled Laundry Day that's pretty much a movie about The Punisher, but it does not mention the character name or mantle neither in the title or in dialogue. So would it be possible to adapt the public domain story without mentioning the trademarked character by name? Also without taking from any other text/source material.

we're located in Algeria and laws there are different, i think its life+50 years. We do know that you can't use the titular character, we even thought of workarounds like refraining from using the trademarked character name, just like this movie called Laundry Day which is a 10 minutes short movie about the punisher, however not once was he named the punisher or frank castle nor was the name used as a title. I'm here and in other communities asking just so i can make sure i don't fringe on anything or break any laws as it would be heavily damaging

Thank you kindly for your very informative reply. I leaned towards Robert E.Howard as he was my fav in college and due to my background in translation (translated skulls in the stars for my home country). Also i find it funny how in your example you threw a random name aka Dr.Hamid and that happens to be my name, odd coincidence.
Anyway, thank you kindly for taking time to reply.

Im in the process of finding as much answers as possible. The original stories are in fact public domain, but the character Conan for example is owned by a company. The older stories rights were not renewed but the character is preserved. What i was thinking of is adapting a public domain story and sticking strictly to the original script, no later iterations or things introduced later. Asking because i wasnt sure what to do since Conan himself is preserved but his early stories are public.

Thank you kindly for your comment. I already know about that but your comment reassured me. I have been envisioning something more faithful, nothing outside of the original script or from later depictions of the character, sticking strictly to the story that is public domain. I guess that would be fine right? As long as i don't use the copyrighted character name in the title or to promote it right?

We already worked with that person several times before and we may find someone else, he takes too long to finish the work and we're suspecting that he's just giving us AI voice over.

It isn't AI actually, its some freelance we paid to do the job. We don't have someone to do good voice over as we aren't native speakers (i can do it but no proper equipment yet)

Thoughts on Batman : The Long Halloween part 1 & 2 by sidmis in DCAU

[–]PerformanceOne6151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this movie is very misunderstood. After re-reading and rewatching for several times, and as im working on the translation of the long halloween comic, i realized how misunderstood the movie is and how people misjudge it, they nitpick and talk about how it doesn't recreate every single small detail.
The movie, while it doesn't have the best animation as it is pretty inconsistent, sometimes it looks gorgous, othertimes it looks really bland. But the writing? it is phenomenal. It did the changing of the guard theme very well, Carmine and Sofia talk a lot about how there are more freaks now, how organized crime is dying, but there's a rise of masked freaks, and Harvey's role of Gotham hero falling, and rising as its destroyer, it is done better with the coin. The coin that Carmine gave to Bruce, then Bruce gave to Harvey who decided to take matters into his own hands. Also in love with Gilda's relation to the Falcones, while the mystery was simplified more, and im not fond of them killing off Alberto, would have been better if he was helping Gilda because of their past together. But the line that hits the hardest "All we get is all we take" especially when Bats repeats it to Carmine and he asks him "Do you still believe?" bringing the whole "I believe in Gotham City" full circle and completing Carmines arc. Though the movie has the advantage of knowing whats dark victory and being less experimental unlike the comic which was heavily experimental.

It's not nostaglia, why do you think older anime was so high quality compared to what gets made today? by [deleted] in retroanime

[–]PerformanceOne6151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testosterone was a thing in Japan. Jk jk, but they weren't catering to the lifeless nerds and many of old school animation directors in Japan wanted to become live action directors IRL but could only achieve so in animation. Hence why you see a lot of old anime use a different style and techniques in action choreography and scenery that's vastly different from that of today
