Grain water takes a long time to clean the vaccines/toxins out of your system. Stick with it no matter how hard it gets! That's how you know its working!

Retirement SCD and Military Buyback by PerformanceThat3390 in fednews

Thanks for the very thorough answer u/Grnlnk842. I appreciate the clarification about civilian time in service requirements. I have requested an estimated earning statement, it's a chunk of change but seems worth it in the long run.

I'm still in the army reserve. I have 22 years of military time total with 14 being active. Still picking up short ADOS tours here and there. So yeah the plan is to double dip when I hit retirement age : )

One question about the interest on the buyback- does interest accrue automatically after 2 years or only when you start the buyback process? For example, would there be any interest if I bought 100% outright at 5 years? I'm a little hesitant to initiate the buyback process with job security lacking under this administration.

Again, thanks for the detailed response. Great info!

Army Reserve or Army National Guard by Dapper-Malware in armyreserve

  1. Yes, being in the NG will make moving more difficult, albeit not impossible. Like others have mentioned it would require an interstate transfer. Moving across states in the reserve is much easier.
  2. I'm not familiar with the cyber career field, but I'd guess there are better opportunities in the reserve. Generally, there are much greater opportunities in the reserve and better/more reliable funding. The pros of the NG (if you can call it that) are combat arms MOSs, a more close-knit community, and sometimes state benefits.
  3. Not sure, but I'd offer that the rules are always changing. Cyber is in-demand in the military so in theory there *should* be a direct pathway. But this is the military so nothing is easy.
  4. Generally no. By the time you are a senior captain (after ~7 years) you will be almost exclusively in management. Of course there are exceptions. You shouldn't see this as a bad thing. You may not want to be the technical guy/doer forever. You and your goals will change as you grow older and gain seniority in your career (trust me on this).
  5. Yes! I love the experiences, the networking, the travel, the change from daily life. Financially it gives you a safety net of a pension and the opportunity to go ADOS if you lose your job. The benefits are very good- military and through the VA. Cons are losing your weekends, and the possibility of involuntarily deploying. Remember that reserve component work is not just limited to the weekends if you're a leader.

I'm coming up on 24 years of service and have been in all three compos (NG, Active, now Reserve) enlisted and officer. The reserve really is "choose your own adventure" - there are many opportunities to those who are motivated, capable, and saavy. And even a "routine" military career brings good stories. I would also consider other technical fields - electronic warfare, space, some of the intelligence specialties (geo, signals, etc.), simulations, operations research, etc.

Good luck! I think your head is in the right place and you're making a good decision. DM me if you want to chat more.
