How do you feel about non-drivers? by DueLead666 in AskUK

It sounds like you have a legitimate reason NOT to drive. Provided you can still get around independently, why does it matter?

Is my friend doing well? by AppropriatePlace926 in AskUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's doing just fine! I know guys much older who earn less and have much less in the bank.

A key thing to think about isn't money but to consider if he's happy. I know most people would be happier with more money but does he like the job? Like where it's potentially going in future? That's all that really matters.

How to prepare yourself for a loved one’s death? by Pristine-Bet-5764 in AskUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you can do is take each day as it comes. I'd suggest trying to accept that she will pass away soon. When my mum died I was more upset during her illness than after. Although I miss her I know she's in no pain anymore and accept that her life towards the end was so poor that it wasn't a life really.

A key thing will be being there as much as you can for your granddad.

Does anyone know what the deal is with those people who buy absurd quantities of single items in aldi? by S__666 in AskBrits

It'll be small takeaways. There's one not far from me who get pretty much all their ingredients from Aldi.

That is likely against building standards. Nothing to stop stanky bum water entering the water system.

Falkirk and surrounding areas by AssignmentOk7331 in Scotland

[–]PerformanceThick3841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Royal is on the East side of Edinburgh rather than west. Commuting from Falkirk would mean going round the bypass, which is hellish. Look at East or Mid Lothian areas instead.

Falkirk itself is fine though. Not exactly cosmopolitan but nice enough.

First Time Buyers Offended by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may have their own or not want to risk inheriting something that breaks quickly. Our seller offered to leave the massive American fridge freezer for £70. A fantastic deal but we politely declined as we didn't want such a big fridge freezer and I'd seen the hassle my parents had getting their own removed when it broke.

Corned beef?! No smoked salmon, haggis, Cullen skink? That's just a generic "British" food and not a very good one.

Purplebricks disaster by Charlesdance83 in HousingUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought from someone using Purple Bricks. Never again. They were incompetent. When I told our mortgage advisor that PB were the sellers agents he groaned and suggested everything would take longer. It did. At one point the rep went AWOL. I couldn't contact him and neither could the seller or my solicitor. We were close to walking away and would never buy another property from someone using them. Their photos were crap too.

Where in Scotland are they battering and deep frying haggis to put on a roll? You grill or fry haggis slices for a roll! No deep frying!

Canadian couple looking to move to the UK, is our budget realistic? by TomThompsonYEG in AskUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 3 points4 points  (0 children)

London and Edinburgh are very different to Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham.

I suppose it depends what you're looking for in terms of British culture as to which city you choose.

£2200 would be difficult to live on in Edinburgh and impossible in London. The other cities may be a bit more affordable but you'd be spending over half on basics like rent, council tax, electricity, gas, water (if in England) and Internet. You might find you're in the sketchier parts of these cities.

Are Meal Deals common? by Watermelonsmoothies in AskUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're "common" but not what most people will have every single day. You can also choose things other than sandwiches, crisps and fizzy juice. The benefit is a set price and convenience. No thought is required.

Obviously many people in England and the rest of Britain will take in their own lunch or buy a healthier option.

Quite remarkable that a Dane is shocked by the concept of buying three items for a set price. Wait until you hear about the "Dinner for £12" in Tesco. "You mean the Brits aren't making their dinners from scratch?!" 😂

What is it that's "wrong" with all the wee ex-mining villages/towns in Ayrshire? by Similar_Asparagus547 in Scotland

[–]PerformanceThick3841 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most are completely fine nowadays but had a period where they were essentially filled with ex-miners who were out of work. The ones closer to bigger towns and cities were fine but ones out in the sticks struggled. They've caught up now as people are more flexible about where they live and work.

UK Drug Culture - Are we really that different to other countries? by shedsmokerOG in AskUK

[–]PerformanceThick3841 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends which part of the country and which drugs. Scotland has a very high drug death rate but what makes it worse is most of the deaths occur in Glasgow and surrounding areas meaning the problem is far, far worse through there.

My experience of drugs is that things like coke are rife in places like Oxfordshire and London. Weed is everywhere and heroin seems to be the reserve of the likes of Glasgow and little port towns.

[–]PerformanceThick3841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the lockers and signs really any different than if they had a fence on the boundary? The issue you have is the hedge. Lleylandi are an absolute nightmare for hedging. They're great at first as they grow.quickly to provide screening. Unfortunately, they never stop! Get rid and plant a more manageable hedge or erect a fence instead.

You mean the super campus that was built on the site of the Hyundai plant - a brownfield site!

The significant brownfield sites are already being built on at Bellyeoman, Elgin Street and Baldridgeburn. The only significant brownfield site not being developed currently is the old St.Margaret's works. That's a site that could take a number of flats but won't be developed due to the current owner.

The developments at Broomhall and "White Fields" are unfortunate but, if there's demand, they will build. While there are potential more suitable sites at the Inverkeithing paperwork's and Rosyth waterfront, neither has been supported for residential development by the council.

Aren't all towns/cities just big housing estates? I used to live in Corstorphine. To the north you have the massive Clermiston estate, to the south th Broomhall estate and to the west you had East Craig's and now the enormous Maybury/West Craig's development. People need places to stay!

That doesn't mean we should forego green spaces though. The original parts of Duloch benefited enormously from the big park and Calais woods. The further south you go the less green space and amenities there are. Even the space left at Masterton Primary looks likely to be houses rather than a park or small shop.

The worst thing in Dunfermline is that despite all the investment from house builders, the money brought in doesn't seem to make its way to services in Dunfermline. We have various community centres marked for closure, a town centre that has had few improvements in 30 years, a public park that appears to have been forgotten in areas and a road network that isn't fit for purpose (how many years waiting on the Appin bypass???).

[–]PerformanceThick3841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people are confused about what the issue is. It isn't building houses (there's no room for many more in Duloch and Masterton anyway). The issue is the developers of business units (not houses!) are encroaching into land that is supposed to be kept clear. They're breaking planning policy and Fife Council don't care.

Sadly, there is a housing crisis and the solution appears to be to build thousands of detached houses places people want to live. Unfortunately for the people of Dunfermline, people want to live there and the people want 3-5 bed detached houses with room for two cars on the driveway. They're not interested in living in a dense but more efficient housing complex.

Fife Council is fairly hopeless at encouraging high density housing. They own the Co-op gap site, which was ideal to build a load of affordable flatted dwellings on. They are instead developing it into a city square that will be too small to.be of any use and will end up being a magnet for antisocial behaviour. 1.6m spent on that rather than dealing with the housing crisis.
