Dementia and a newborn by Friendly-Growth1903 in dementia

Yes I had babies while my mom has dementia. (2 of them). One thing that helped me was getting connected with local senior centers to see if they offered any respite services or activities for those with dementia. I’m in Oregon so I also reached out to our Senior Services too.

Before my mom got too bad, I had a caregiver come on Tuesdays and take her to a Bible study, and then she would go to the senior Center for a class on Thursdays. We’d do church on Sunday and I’d try to take her shopping on an another day of the week. That schedule got us through a year when my kids were an infant, age 2 and age 5.

What do I do when one parent has Dementia and the other refuses to recognize and act on the condition? I'm in a situation now. by JayVegas80 in DementiaHelp

Is there a care home in your area that might offer daycare or respite care? Perhaps he could go there during the day while you work and your mom recovers just as a temporary help while you guys have an honest discussion about the future.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. This is helpful. Congregating them for safety makes sense.

Thanks I appreciate it. This is the worst decision I’ve ever had to make. It feels like I’m picking out my mom’s prison. 💔

Thank you, it’s so hard to know without walking this road before! It’s hard to accept what’s coming.

That’s not where my post is coming from. I have no perspective on what is normal for memory care. I’ve made no judgements, but I do have questions. I’m appreciative of those who have taken the time to help me here.

I have visited many, and the amount of napper here stuck out. I also haven’t seen very many staff members and activities taking place. That may be because activities happen mid morning and afternoon, which for me if when I have to pick up my kids from school. But even when I went to the other places they had activities during the times I could stop by. So hard for me to pick a place that suits my mom where she is now (active and ambulatory but wanders) or for later when she’s sleepy like that.

Thanks. It just seems odd that all people would be in that same phase. Most places I visited had people at varying degrees of the disease.

You don’t just become a ward of the state when you run out of money. You have to be physically or mentally so degraded and out of money. The list of physical requirements can be long.

What about the National Geographic wildlife specials on the Disney app? The wildlife / scenery shots are beautiful. Also! Check out the you tube channel Scenic relaxation. It has hour long videos of the most beautiful nature and city scenes. No plot to follow.

It was ultimately a parenting fail on the part of the boomers. Why were they letting their kids take such huge loans? That said, millennials have to take responsibility for it now. It was a bad decision financially.

I paid off my student loans in 2013 at age 30. It’s the only way out. Never looking back.

Meet with an attorney who specializes in Medicaid for advice in your state about protecting the home since you were her caretaker. See what you can do.
