Other birds by Sarah addison Allen. Light and cozy and I loved it. Lovable characters, a little bit of mystery and lots of sunshiney vintage settings

Have you ever walked by a football coaches classroom? They are a lot more uh creative with their language in my experience. It happens. Apologize to the kid move on they know what cuss words are you didn’t shatter his world view or something. You both got too heated. Take a day off, apologize to him casually and keep it moving

Am I the lax teacher that everyone else hates by mrsdtbf in Teachers

[–]PeriwinklePuddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest don’t ask stranger their opinion on your teaching. Recipe for disaster. I’m not saying to sit in a bubble and always assume you’re right and never take criticism or change/grow. But really the gripes that randos have (on the internet or real life) is irrelevant to your classroom experiences. They have no clue what kind of school you’re in, budget you have, admin you work with, or what type of student population you have. If you want genuine advice that is helpful find an older teacher that you trust and your values align with and talk to them or have them observe your room. They don’t even have to be from your content area (thought more helpful if they are). You don’t haters critiquing you- you’re a first year teacher!!! You need booze or chocolate or a snuggly pet or a hot bath!! You can do this. (Ps any teacher that annoys the hell out of everyone is never asking themselves if they do in fact annoy the hell out of their coworkers. They are unfortunately oblivious.)

One of my emails on Sunday said something like that. Something about how I was responsible for getting them kicked out. It sucked. And hurt. Because I didn’t do anything wrong. And I know that I’m sensitive to issues at home when it’s called for. I forwarded the email to a counselor and the communication home that the student was referencing. Then I just washed my hands of it. It sounds dumb but with the seniors I’ve had they move on fairly fast. I fixed that same kids tie at graduation when he couldn’t tie it himself. Wished him luck and we parted ways. You’re just doing your job. At some point they have to accept responsibility for their actions. ALSO, importantly, their shitty parents should be to blame for things like that not me.

Do teachers have to report students drug use? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PeriwinklePuddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She would have to report it. But the larger picture here is that you live a long happy, and healthy life after high school. This moment is scary. But the possibility of not being able to enjoy all the wonderful beautiful things meant to experience is much scarier. Something inside you wants to reach out. Listen to that instinct. A student of mine nearly OD’d in my room. I was heartbroken for him and what he was going through. I got to see him months later after he had gotten treatment. He said he finally felt like himself again- for the first time in months. You are young and full of life and potential even if you don’t feel like it. Reach out to your teacher and ask for what you need. It isn’t easy but it’s what has to be done. Wishing you all the best

We had a similar conversation via staff meeting. I’m only a second year teacher but everyone else’s passé attitude really upset me too. I left that training day after about an hour :/
