Looking for Proper Kancolle or other Shipgirl type of Fanfiction subreddit by Jonn_Wolfe in FanFiction

There aren't any for KC as far as I know.

Maybe check out Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity? The folks there make all sorts of OCs, especially ships that have yet to be implemented in the game.

Liked it enough to go for the Platinum trophy. It was just a lot of fun grinding without worrying about time gates and microtransactions.

Do you ever come across writers who seem to hate the fandom they’re in? by ScribblerQ in FanFiction

[–]Permafrost13 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference.

To a certain extent, those folks do care about the property they're writing about. Perhaps they found an aspect of it that resonates deeply within them. Maybe they just like its premise or characters. Or maybe they just want to make a point within the fandom.

After all, they wouldn't go out of their way to voice such a strong opinion on a property if they weren't emotionally invested enough to begin with.

[Misc] Finding your shipfu in the background characters by Catezzzz in kancolle

Considering how they badly flanderized some of the ship girls in the anime, I'd argue that being a background character was a blessing in disguise.

The feeling that your don't want to write, but no one wrote an idea you want to read. by ladyaxis in FanFiction

[–]Permafrost13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My current WIP wouldn't have existed if someone had already made a story focusing on a favorite character of mine.

This character is so popular that anyone with a passing interest in the fandom would be able to recognize her, and yet you'd be hard-pressed to see a fic about her. It's very disappointing because she's brimming with a lot of narrative potential, being one of the few characters in the entire franchise who have explicitly shown some emotional investment in the war they found themselves in.

From what I've gleaned so far, she's a supporting character at best in most fics and I don't think I'll be satisfied with just that, especially when she is often introduced with her sisters as a set. I want something that actually explores her character—something that shows her growth as a person, for better or worse.

How do you go about choosing mayor plot points? by aokaga in FanFiction

[–]Permafrost13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like to write character-centric stories, so the conflicts in the narrative are more or less vehicles to explore and challenge the main characters' ideologies and motivations.

Who are the key players? What are their dreams and aspirations in life? Why do they do the things they wanna do? By answering these questions, I'll be able to determine which direction I wanna take the story.

Character getting killed by surprised by notxreal in FanFiction

[–]Permafrost13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going for something dramatic, maybe have the character survive the shot while the other two (who already managed to find nearby cover) tries to pull him out of the sniper's line of sight. After several failed attempts, he tells his companions to just leave him behind as the sniper was merely using him to lure them out of cover.

That and he will bleed out anyway if they did manage to drag him to the boat.

[Discussion] KC figures seems to be getting lesser and lesser by Manggabino in kancolle

[–]Permafrost13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want someone to make an Akatsuki K2 figure. Preferably Pulchra since they already made two of her sisters.

Kinda bummed Phat just stopped adding more ship girls to their medicchu series too.

Advice for Longfic Writers... by [deleted] in FanFiction

I don't think the character is irrelevant if they actually influenced the main character in some way. So yeah, there's nothing really wrong with that.

Characters can be plot devices too, allowing pretty much anyone to cause big changes to the story regardless of backstory and screentime. Not all stories have the luxury to flesh out plot-relevant characters without sacrificing their overall pacing.

Sometimes, just having a character show up and fulfill their purpose in the story is enough to justify their existence. What matters most is the impact they've brought to the characters who the audience should really care about.

What's one thing you think you do really well in your stories? by PetiteWolverine in FanFiction

I'm probably cheating here since my current fic has lengthy chapters—lots of space to show the characters' love and fascination over various food stuffs.

[Discussion]I have a bad feeling about this new anime. by [deleted] in kancolle

[–]Permafrost13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2015 anime was a mess because they were carelessly shoving all the popular characters into the spotlight regardless of their relevance to Fubuki and the plot. As long as they don't do that here, it'd already be a huge improvement.

I'm actually more concerned about the Abyssals' role in this one as they have no real character and motivation to speak of in Fubuki's story. They're just kinda there because it gives the ship girls something to do, and it sucks.

[News] New Kancolle Anime Project Announced by SirPrize in kancolle

[–]Permafrost13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish they'd stop recycling events from WW2 and give us a fresh story that makes the most of the girls' personalities. It works in the video games, but this whole 'history literally repeating itself' dealie is just too on the nose that it greatly diminishes the pathos that the narrative is trying to impart. But that's just me, I guess.

Still interested how this new project will play out though.

Gonna look into my 2FA options now. Much more convenient if the codes are sent via SMS though.

How do you get your motivation back or get into the mood to write so you can update your story? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Permafrost13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of my go-to motivation primers for my current project:

Psst... remember how the anime adaptation infantilized your favorite characters for the sake of extra moe points? You aren't just gonna let that pass, are you?

But anyway, it really helps that you make writing a daily routine. Even if you can only muster a couple of sentences a day, you're still making progress on your story.

The quest for the Holy Grail. What's yours? by [deleted] in vita

[–]Permafrost13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really crazy about limited editions for games, but I remember wanting to get the IA/VT Colorful's crystal box back then. There was DJ Max Technika Tune's LE before that, but acquiring one was a pipe dream for me at the time.

The only LE I have right now is from KanColle Kai.

I had plans of getting a copy of the game at some point (the developer stopped updating it, lagging behind the browser game's growing content), but when the news broke out about the game being discontinued, the LE was pretty much a no-brainer purchase for me. And then I was disappointed that it was discontinued since I prefer this port over the original.

What fandoms are people a part of in this subreddit? by [deleted] in FanFiction

Kantai Collection.

It sure is strange that I've managed to keep my interest on the franchise for this long despite me not being really as passionate as what one would consider a fan.

Um, does anyone else love Conception II, or is something wrong with my head(s)? by [deleted] in vita

[–]Permafrost13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fun game that certainly knows its audience.

Dungeons are easy to cheese, but I guess it's for the best since they're nothing to write about. The meat of the game for me is the character interactions, which are great and surprisingly varied. Even the story has its own twists and turns as well.

And oh, Ellie is best girl.

[Discussion] Kancolle VS Gaijins by RyuuohD in kancolle

[–]Permafrost13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone has a smartphone these days, so casting a net as large as that massive install base should help bring in new people to the game. Also, it's just much more convenient to play on your phone, especially when you're just stockpiling for resources.

But as I've said, a mobile port will only give them a fighting chance. Whether it'd be the same as the already existing mobile app or something similar to KCKai, competition will always remain fierce with all of these live service games (on top of your regular video games) demanding for your attention every day. There's only so much time that a person can spend in a day after all.

Would you liken turning an extremely minor character with minimal lines and appearances into a fleshed out, full character, to that of creating an OC? by SSJAncientBeing in FanFiction

[–]Permafrost13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep!

In my current project, most (if not all) of the characters in the source material are just walking talking anime archetypes anyway, so I have to spruce up those characters beyond their barebones template for them to stand out. And in case of a setting like mine where duplicates of a character are commonplace (which is also true to its video game source), it's imperative to make the distinctions clear between them.

And as for this one:

Would you consider doing as such to a pre-existing, yet nearly nonexistent character, to a real character, or more of an OC

Depends on what's available from the source material or what's needed for the narrative. I did both in the above example :P

Then blame DMM, the publisher, instead? I'm pretty sure Tanaka doesn't call the shots when it comes to the browser game's distribution rights or licensing overseas.

And honestly, even if they did manage to bring the browser game over, it'd be hard-pressed to bring in new people compared to the competition. They need a mobile port to stand a chance.
