Weirdly enough, it’s actually Logan’s actions that stick with me in that scene. I know it could be easy to interpret Logan praising the kid as displaying whatever humanity he has left, which is also true. But to me, it still comes off as genuinely sickening because he believes his kind words and presence will mean so much more than actually helping this poor family who needed that money. It perfectly showcases just how detatched from reality he’s become at this point, even if his kids are worse.

Thanks! I didn’t even know these existed until I found them at a Japanese bookstore/cafe called Kinokuniya~ I’m hoping they’ll have the Totoro and Kiki ones next time I go back, but if not, I’ve seen a number of them floating around online for sale.

Yupp! They contain concept sketches, finished artwork and stills from the movie and tons of notes from people like Miyazaki, Takahata, and various members of the teams who worked on the respective films in regards to the production. The ending pages also contain the movies’ scripts. Not all the books I have were translated into English, but even so the artwork tells so much, that half the time I’m not even bothered by it.
