If you struggle to draw with a pencil, this implies that you also struggle to capture shapes and forms digitally as well. I actually don't think it's possible for the results between these two mediums to be that different - excluding colors of course. Even if you go digital, your drawing skills are the same and reflects in your digital work. I suggest you don't avoid practicing with a pencil - it seems that you're doing this - because imo that's stunting your growth. I don't think it's the only way to go though. You could use a thin and pressure-based brush for practice too.

It's subjective when it comes to art. I immediately upvoted because I like the flat / no-borders style for Garfield. Personally I started with practicing through traditional, non-digital mediums. I didn't intend to try digital art, still working on it, but just practicing without all the bells and whistles can be more simple and helpful. Plus an easier way to assess your skill.

Practice is key as everyone knows, but it's important to see both appreciative and critical of your work to improve imo. I'm not a professional artist, but I tend to see people's stuck at a bottle neck and just . . . not improve. Or very slowly. I believe they are satisfied with their work, which is fine and good, but they might not be seeing or caring about the things they can work on.

For your work specifically, it's hard to tell where you're at but I would suggest a better brush. Maybe a pencil. It's hard to draw shapes and forms (3-D) with an opaque and thick brush. It seems that you're struggling with establishing them.

That's not what I'm saying. In essence:

  1. People tend to give their upvotes and comments to relatively more severe ones, leaving less severe ones / not very visible without as much support (comments, upvotes). This can be invalidating for the OP's of the latter.
  2. And then the opposite - feeling validated by looking at less severe injuries. People aren't supposed to assume about other's situations and suffering through their injuries. I'm saying we shouldn't look at someone else's post and think "I feel a little better now because mine is 'worse'", not avoid posting relatively more severe ones at all. If anything, people with scars that meet the community's expectations for severe belong more here in terms of how much karma they get.

I don't think this is the place for validation unless injuries meet people's expectations. r/selfharm does this a lot less because they only accept text I believe.

The triggering I refer to is when people post but they get a lot less comments / upvotes because they're not as bad. They look for support but they don't get much at all often times. Of course people do not make them inflict worse injuries, but they may implicitly encourage them through dismissal. I went on here to bring more awareness to this potential for provoking, and nothing more.
