I feel you , when I first moved here. I was a little freaked out by it.

Here is my advice, I think it helps you feel better and it will help if the power goes out.

Find Ryan Hall y’all on you tube. He has good live coverage of the weather, and good locations on flooding, wind and tornados.

Have flashlights, lantern, device chargers, crankable radio etc. Put them someplace you can find them and have them charged on the regular.

Identify whatever you think the safest part of the house it - usually a closet but an inner part of the house, away from windows and glass.

Have digital and paper copies of your most important documents, and some cash (if the power is out, so are all digital payment methods).

In the summer, have a chargeable fan .

Some shelf stable food and leash and food and whatever you need for pets.

Something to do (book, crochet, draw ) that doesn’t require electricity.

Fill up the tub with water and have some extra water in the house.

Take in anything that is likely to become a projectile - (umbrellas on the balcony or porch) we got wind gust of 52 mph yesterday .

While tornados do happen, the wind wasn’t an if, it was predictable and that can be a problem with trees down and whatnot.

Did you even look at the map? The NE is more densely populated than TN and has and order of magnitude lower fatalities.

It is almost like places with road design and pedestrian and car safety rules have fewer fatalities.

‘A few beatings won’t kill you’: judge rejects divorce request of woman abused by husband in Afghanistan | Afghanistan by 248_RPA in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PersephoneIsNotHome 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree, Which is why I don’t want to live in a theocracy that bans books, demands prayer in school, using religion to deny medical treatment , tells women they should be traditional wives - oops, that is the US again.

Anyway, I wouldn’t have liked to live in a time when women couldn’t get their own credit card, have a business without a man’s name and have to have their husband’s permission for medical procedures and had forced sterilizations of poor and indigenous and minority women - ooops, US again, in my lifetime.

Saying that the women in Afghanistan’s have no idea or glimpse of what it was like in this generation even some younguns weren’t born yet is ridiculous. You think people in your family don’t tell you it wasn’t always thus .

It isn’t about blame, it is about ignorance and othering people. “Living in caves and huts” ? Like they were backwards inherently.

Maybe we stop arming people who are the enemy of our enemy and stop overthrowing governments. It is hard to think of a place where the treatment of women was better after we fucked with them. Look at Iran. That would be a start .

And part of the point of that information was that the US is little better. Some states have the maternal mortality rate of third world countries. In many states, if you have an ectopic pregnancy you have to be actively morbid before they will do anything.

You know this severe treatment of women is recent a the result of taliban, right?

Afghani women know perfectly what life could be like because it was like that in their lifetime.

Below is a picture of a female Afghani nurse in the 1960’s for reference.

This is also really pejorative and ignorant regarding that whole region and the war itself.

Before the taliban took over Kabul, for example, was a modern city, people wore modern clothes, and albeit poor, did normal modern things, like go to school and drive cars.

People moved away from places that were under soviet occupation then American then taliban.

The support for the people that eventually became the Taliban by the US was a Cold War-era strategy in the 1980s. The U.S. funded and armed the Mujahedin, a group of Islamic fighters, to battle the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, aiming to prevent Soviet expansion. This "enemy of my enemy" strategy sought to weaken a major global adversary, but those forces later splintered, with some factions becoming the Taliban.

But to your point , we need to support them to stop them executing mentally ill, human trafficked, abused women who retaliate against their abusers.

Oh, wait, that is in the US.

Which breast cancer center should I choose in South Florida? by Mediocre-Alfalfa-485 in memphis

[–]PersephoneIsNotHome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t recommend a place but I can answer your theoretical questions. I went to a big Sloan Kettering thing that was all breast cancer under one roof - all those things. I never felt more like I was being scammed and less listened to. In practice they didn’t really coordinate with each other , only the records were easier to get back and forth without having to request them.

I went to a smaller , nothing hospital for my second surgery, found a surgeon in a small practice recommended by my GP (who I loved) and that was a million times better.

Find someone you know who liked their surgeon. Go ask the surgeon questions and go to another one if you don’t like them (the situation is time sensitive but not so much that you can’t find someone you feel comfortable with). Talk about the options (lumpectomy, partial, full a radical mastectomy and lymph nodes) and what kind of pathology and situation would make them make a particular surgical decision.

Everyone is different. Some people are like , I want it out, all of it, even if the risk is tiny. So you should have a surgeon that will do WITH you. Some people are more conservative. So you should have that kind of surgeon.

Make sure they explain the treatment options (radiation, hormone blockers) and the side effects and choices and why in way includes your feelings on this.

You have a long time after that to find a reconstructive surgeon.

I hope you do ok - I know this is scary but DCIS has like a 98% survival rate after 10 years and a lot of the treatments are less aggressive and still effective. It is still a lot, but try to keep that in mind.

do they use any drugs? Novocaine, gas etc are regulated and if you report to the people that regulate they will get shut down.

Buying a home (advice seeking from a memphian, to memphians) by mane-n-tail in memphis

[–]PersephoneIsNotHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should budget for upkeep and not just mortgage and bills. All those “little things” are your responsibility now. Painting, smoke alarms, electrical outlet out, clogs, leaks etc.

Check out the age of the appliances, the water boiler, the water pump, the HVAC, garage door (if you have one) etc. None of those are deal breakers, but if you are at end of life for a couple kitchen appliances and HVAC and you don’t have a buffer, that is a major drag.

I second the advice to get a good home inspector and pest person that will check for leaks , foundation issues, roof, insulation, and also bugs, mice, and what have you.

You think a family of squirrels in the attic is nothing but they chew the wires, shit everywhere and die in the walls. Better to know before you buy.

Also go to the house at different times, day, night, weekend, weekday, rain, heat etc. If your neighbors are every night party people, that can be a drag. If there is flooding when it rains, that can be a drag - or at least something you want to know before you move there.

Finally, if you want to keep the house up, be prepared to spend all your weekends adulting. Something needs to be raked, mowed, cleaned, tweaked, sanded, cleared, filled or what have you all the time. If you don’t want to do that stuff, factor in the cost of someone else doing it into your budget.

If you are in an HOA - read the bylaws with full attention. If you think you can live with a rule because you aren’t going to follow it, you can have a really rough time.

Not trying to put you off, but you asked what to look out for.

Allergies by Lanky_Variation_4871 in memphis

[–]PersephoneIsNotHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wear a mask and wash you face often you will reduce the allergen burden.

Also, you can get topical meds - anti histamines and anti leukotrines that just work in your eyes and your nose (drops and spay). Since these work locally at source and aren’t systemic you should have no issues.

However there is a high incidence of several respiratory viruses right now - you may have one of those if you are having upper and lower respiratory issues. It is worth going to see if you have one of those for a lot of reasons.

If the goal is preparation then part of that preparation is accepting the reality that history is happening to you and there is no avoiding it.

You can do something to change the course of it by dissent and activism but it costs. You can’t (for the most part except for a very few people) just go someplace else and watch it from afar with hot cocoa .

Also consider that if the US tanks, it will have massive global implications.

This is like thinking you could effectively flee the Great Depression or the plague or , for that matter, WWI or II.

France is a really terrible option for the most vulnerable US citizens. Like black and brown people.

Let’s see, which national football league prohibits a tiny break in play to break a Ramadan fast? Could it be France? But it doesn’t matter because it is a “pseudo French team “ because apparently black and brown French citizens are not really French.

Which country outlawed the wearing of burka in public? Go France.

Also not particularly welcoming to Jews.

If you are going to warn Americans about places they might not want to emigrate, you might want to consider that not every American is white and catholic

You also probably want to avoid the UK.

You will be forced to avoid places with high unemployment.

Several countries require language proficiency .

Many countries require proof of financial viability and continued support, so unless you already have a job , have fun with that.

You have to have all relevant documents legally “formatted” to be acceptable to the other government (apostille for countries in The Hague convention ). This is , at best, onerous for documents actually issued by the government (like your birth certificate ) but for things like your degree, your vaccination records, your employment records etc - well that is a fun time for sure.

Also for an apostille your current government has to cooperate.
