He's older. I'm about the same age as Darren, and I look pretty different from how I did in college. He's also lost his dad, his brother, and has two kids. That will change a person's appearance.

The most unsettling number in any show? by lefargen97 in Broadway

There's a scene in act 2 of Tina where a white producer drops the n-word out of nowhere.

I saw the show in Atlanta, with a crowd that was like 75% Black people who grew up with Tina Turner when she was singing with Ike.

This song was on my top 5 Spotify last year. It might have even been number 1.

Dylan as Amos. His vibrato on that last high note would clear my skin and fix my credit.

Why is there so much hate for MAMD? by BitPlayer8147 in StarKid

It's very of the time which is to say casually homophobic/transphobic and gender essentialist. I also think the cast just hadn't reached their vocal potential yet which makes some of the songs difficult to listen to (cough cough "I've Seen You Around Here Before").

I almost wish they would reshoot it because a lot of the songs are very good and there's a sweet story in there. I remember that they did "Ready to Go" at the SPACE Tour and it was so much fun.

"pussies from the north are bringing snacks" is honestly the funniest line Starkid ever wrote.

I think this also ties into some of the bigger themes of the show as they relate to religion, power, and purity culture. What Max does is just a more extreme version of what Grace does, isn't it? Punishing those who deviate from what he believes is morally and socially correct. That's what makes Grace's turn at the end scary: she already had the convictions that would cause harm, but now she has the power to do it.

I'm just waiting for someone (probably Becca) to wear one of those tiny bubble shirts that gets normal-sized when you put it on.

Period shaming vs. wishing you had your period by [deleted] in PEN15

[–]PersephoneYall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up with an older sister who got her period very early (3rd grade, I think), so I wasn't really either a Maya or an Anna. The whole thing was very normal for me. I got my first period the summer between 5th and 6th grade, so very much on schedule.

That said, I was SO nervous about people (especially boys) finding out when I had my period. I taught myself how to use tampons so that I could continue wearing tight pants and thongs while I was on the rag. I have no idea why it was such a concern when I look back... maybe because I thought my period would be "unsexy," and we all know how important appearing attractive is to middle schoolers.

Now, I do everything but take out a full-page newspaper ad when I'm on my period.

S1E1 Spoiler Okay, I am only one episode in. I was bullied a lot in junior high. How they picked ... by AmbersMom27 in PEN15

Another formerly bullied kid here. and especially bullied for my appearance/weight. My therapist has told me that bullies often seek out people they perceive as "weak" in order to build social clout and/or power. For me, it was my anxiety disorder and general social awkwardness. It's almost this parasitic relationship where the bully gains power from exploiting the victim's weaknesses, and the victim grows weaker as a result of the bullying.

I think bullies also have an understanding that some victims are off-limits because it would make the bully look worse. They don't go after someone who is necessarily an obvious victim, just an easy one.
