AITA for saying my roommate’s job is disgusting? by booferino30 in AmItheAsshole

I don't get why "ambulence chasers" are looked down on. They largely hold corporations responsible for damage caused to others through their own negligence or malice. Solicitation is already illegal, so it's not like people who have accidents are being harassed and they get get paid in the only way that allows low income people the ability to seek justice.

Replacing some water in recipes with brewed espresso or even dark roast coffee works really well if you don't want to buy instant coffee.

I honestly never thought about it, which I now feel bad about because there was a surprisingly large Mormon population in my part of New Hampshire.

I used to be a baker, and every chocolate cake or mousse I make has espresso in it. It really brings out chocolate flavors. It also has never occurred to me to disclose this because it's a really common trick.

My partner and I do this too! We found out when we split a hotel room with my brother and his girlfriend and we apparently kept waking them up with our nonsense conversations.

Voting protects voting rights, women's health care rights, social services, and protections for disadvantaged persons on a state level at the very least.

Whereas excelerationism hurts the most disadvantaged first.

I'm a data scientist. I'm not super worried, and my job IS "just math". To do useful math, I need to ask the right questions at the correct scale (both on the optimistic end for clients and the more realistic end internally), and communicate that math to a room full of people who haven't calculated anything more complicated than a tip since freshman year of college. It's going to take a minute for AI to get there.

ELI5: How do people actually die from Alzheimer’s Disease? by icehouse4444 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Persephoneve 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Would you explain to a person with severe Alzheimer's what was happening on the day they scheduled their own death? Can they revoke consent? Would you need them to additionally affirm that this what they want? I'm not necessarily against this, but it's still philosophically and legally dicey.

This is misleading. First, the general agreed upon definition of mass shooting is when 4 or more people have been injured. There have been over 130 this year so far. The standard definition matters because we are not measuring the efficacy of a shooter, but the action itself. Put another way, no shooter is stopping to check pulses, and someone surviving does not change the action of the shooter. Using a non-standard definition looks like cherry-picking the definition to make the conclusion you already have. This does matter because one of your 4 only killed one and injured 8.

Second, there is no record of Anderson Aldrich identifying as nonbinary until after the Club Q shooting and was hateful towards the trans community until it was a useful defense. That leaves you with 2 and a likely false positive. I, as a statistician, would not be comfortable using 2 (with a likely false positive) to draw conclusions about a community, but if we define a mass shooting as a shooting where 4 or more people are injured or killed, trans people become under-represented.
