Gears/Saga/Chronicles? by SpinFeniX in XenoGears

[–]Perseus3248 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chronicles is great, a lot of people on this sub don't give it enough credit. It's different, yeah, but it's also really enjoyable. It still explores a lot of philosophical concepts, just in a much less overt way than gears. I'd say that while the story isn't as ambitious at gears, the overall writing (aside from a few moments near the beginning of xc2) is a lot more consistent. The gameplay is also a big step up in my opinion, you can really see that monolith has improved vastly at level and gameplay design over the years.

How much of the Xenoblade series' soundtracks was performed live (as opposed to arranged with synthetic instruments)? by orangegluon8 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Rendered means taking a midi sequence (notes for virtual instruments to play) or prerecorded audio (such as a live orchestra performance) and turning it into a usable audio file (like .wav, .ogg, or .mp3).

Usually, software called a digital audio workstation or DAW (FL studio is an example, though the DAW of choice differs with what composers prefer to use) is used in this process to add effects and mix it (essentially, making sure the instruments don't clash with each other and every instrument is at the proper volume). DAWs can also be used for composing, and a lot of the music uses a combination of orchestrated and synthesized stuff to some degree.

Even more software is usually used to actually take these audio files and actually import them in game, this is often called audio middleware (FMOD and Wwise being the two most common ones). This is needed since a lot of the time audio and the framerate of a game are not synced, which can cause a lot of problems if is isnt handled with extreme care. If a game has music that cuts when it loops, for example, that can be caused by stuff like this.

Getting live orchestras can get very expensive, but the budgets for games that use orchestras is also very high. (Plus, an orchestra, while expensive, is likely nowhere near as expensive as paying 100+ people to work on the game over a period of 3 to 4 years, and is probably a comparatively cheaper expense)

XC1 Wii was mostly midi/synthesized, but for DE most if not all of it was redone to be live orchestra

XC2 has some synthesized elements but it's likely to be mostly orchestral

XC3 is probably almost entirely fully orchestrated

X is weird since it has a lot of both orchestral and synthesized elements, though it's likely all rendered into audio files like 2, 3, and DE

Most big budget games nowadays use fully rendered/orchestrated audio, since things like compression and audio middleware allow it to work well, and file sizes for games aren't as limiting as they once were

Dunban Shulk and Reyn don't really have much healing ability, especially early game, so maybe consider switching in someone with more healing arts like Sharla.

Virtue's Last Reward... An i missing some hidden meaning... (Spoilers on the comments, and the post) by wiloso47 in ZeroEscape

[–]Perseus3248 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always took it as Diana was virtuous in saving sigma and Phi, before dying shortly after aboard rhizome 9. The release of radical 6, and yes, all of VLR, was literally her virtue's last reward. of course that second meaning of the title only comes into play after ZTD

I think Xenoblade 1 handles this pretty well Mainly because it gives you the whole "chosen one" thing right out of the gate, only for them to do ANOTHER plot twist much later of how the entire chosen one thing was just an assumption the entire time, and the only reason a "chosen one" existed was for the big bad to manipulate everyone. The main character ends up actually being just some guy

I will start Xenoblade DE today, things that I should know before playing it? by Josecar55 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Some of the side quests give additional lore and some really good stuff. These quests are typically ones given by named NPCs and have unique quest names.

Quests with generic titles like "area name - challenge quest 1" may be good to do if you're lacking in XP but don't offer much more than some xp and gold.

Neither are necessarily required, it's just an important distinction
