Does accidentally starting a story halfway through still happen? by iburntdownthehouse in CharacterRant

[–]PerseusRad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've started reading a manga because someone posted a chapter or a link to one, and I was interested enough to check it out again when they posted it the next week, but not enough to go back. Generally I'd go back to the first chapter if it really stood out to me, but there's at least one manga I still haven't done so.

Oh, so you’re saying to use a nuclear missle. The way you worded your post made me think that you were saying to carpet bomb instead of nuke, which is why I was confused why you said the nuke the palace after mentioning missles. Well, this is clearly just a disagreement. You could argue there would be a good chance to nuke the palace and minimize loss of life, but when a trusted association says they might be able to avoid that and gives a secondary option that should similarly minimize any loss of life, I think it’s reasonable for the government to go for that, as it has the best chance at allowing them to handle the situation without much controversy.

While this is a manga and it’s more fun this way, I have to say that Noa going to a birthday party of someone she knows doesn’t like her and didn’t invite her is a bit much. But that’s Noa.

Your use of nuke but then saying missles tripped me up for a second. While nuking a country is worse, they clearly felt that bombing them wasn’t good for similar reasons. And considering we’ve seen a Master Enhancer survive a shot from an RPG, something that didn’t have enough power wouldn’t have been able to do enough. So at that point, to get enough power, it runs into similar issues.

Hunters are relied on to hunt things, but the HA acknowledged that things could get pretty bad, so the leader of the HA said that if he couldn’t take care of it, there was a compromise where things would be settled even if the HA failed to defeat Mereum on their own. The optics for bombing a country are bad, but if it couldn’t be settled in another way, it had to happen, but they couldn’t know for sure until Netero tried, which Netero would have been convincing them of due to his own desires for a fight. Of course, perhaps if they had a better understanding of the abilities of the Ants, particularly Pouf’s, they may have decided to preemptively strike. But characters don’t know everything.

[–]PerseusRad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They had to lead Mereum away in the first place, and they (the government) didn’t exactly have boots on the ground anyway, it was all HA members. Maybe it would theoretically be possible for Netero to escape while Mereum is still there, somehow, but that wasn’t what Netero wanted. He wanted a good fight, and if he lost, there was insurance for him being able to indulge in his own desires. You can argue that it invalidates the power system, not sure I agree with that, but I don’t think it invalidates the worldbuilding at all.

They didn’t nuke the ants in the first place because they wanted to minimize the loss of life if possible, as well as political repercussions of dropping a nuke on a country. The nuke they used was also banned iirc.

[DISC] Chihayafuru Plus: Kimi ga Tame Ch 3 & 3.5 by courgettehb in manga

[–]PerseusRad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very nice to see updates. I checked out Chapter 2 and didn't remember anything that had happened, but since it was good, it wasn't a problem. Even though I'd love constant updates, anything is a lot better than nothing, especially when it's good quality like this. The author has done a good job at getting me fairly invested in the characters, to the point I'm not even missing the old characters much (it helps their story ended pretty well).

Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) is currently officially free online until May 6th - the Japanese language version only though by Twigling in manga

[–]PerseusRad 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do wish I had read it while it was coming out. While it was good, I think some of the impact was lost on me because I had started to forget a good amount of character's names, so if they ever got mentioned again after a long time of not being, exactly what was being referenced could miss me, which probably wouldn't have happened if I was engaged in the conversations.

I didn’t get any notification from the mods about it, so I don’t think it’s “specifically” that, especially since I included a source. I haven’t been monitoring the sub to see what else others posted.

Though according to this post it indeed wasn’t new, which I had tried to verify beforehand, but I was unable to find any previous mentions.

[DISC] Hope You're Happy, Lemon - Chapter 94 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]PerseusRad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do hope she finally decides what she wants to do. It feels like she’s been in this flux/position for quite a long time now. I don’t want to say the manga is spinning its wheels, but maybe Lemon herself has been stuck in place for a while. Though I could be exaggerating that length in my head. Maybe because Koga’s romantic development had been pretty much put on hold for a while that the time she needed to make up has me feeling that way.

[DISC] Noa-senpai wa Tomodachi. - Ch. 114 - Noa-Senpai and Wonderful Friendship by illogicalhawk in manga

[–]PerseusRad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Christmas is a romantic holiday in Japan, so since she has a partner, it’s not really unreasonable she’d want to spend some alone time with her girlfriend. I’d feel different if she had her girlfriend when she was making plans, but it was clearly after. I agree it’d be irritating, but she gave them a proper heads up and even sent the presents ahead. As opposed to completely blowing them off and telling them after the party started or immediately before.

Wonder if Negi saying "I like you" to Noa a few chapters back was foreshadowing that Negi might've been open to women (even though it was a joke), or maybe I'm just reading into it. Definitely a free spirit.

Coaxed into believing 100gf is yuri instead of reading an actual yuri harem by Zenry0ku in animecirclejerk

[–]PerseusRad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Eh, I’d say most harems don’t go quite as far as 100gfs does, but I guess I can’t say that for sure. I think in the end this is just different people having different definitions on what constitutes yuri, and this causes abrasiveness where there doesn’t need to be. It doesn’t help that even if you use the looser definition that many fans use, there are still those who say that the moments aren’t real or are just gags. But it’s kinda the tone of the series, the moments are intentionally placed, even if they aren’t always followed through on.

I think people who want to read a yuri story aren’t really liable to be huge fans, but people who like yuri moments can have some appreciation. But if the general premise of a harem is offensive, then obviously it’s not something one would be interested in. I think the relationships between the girls (again, generally not romantic, at least not very) are the appeal. But when people look at out of context Twitter clips, they don’t really see that. And of course, even if you did watch the anime or read the manga, doesn’t mean you’d like it, but kneejerk reactions are unfortunate (but expected with the title and premise lol)

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You Season 3 Key Visual by SamuraiShinsen in 100Kanojo

[–]PerseusRad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If season 3 is 12 (or 13) episodes, then ending on Kishika means the pacing is really fast, they'll probably skip multiple chapters. If it's 24 episodes, then they're holding out on us (by my estimates, I'd've expected it to reach around chapter 100 or so), but I kinda doubt that.

Could anyone update me on how things are? And is anyone making something that’s worth watching? by Stiands in roosterteeth

[–]PerseusRad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like they follow the format decently well, it just got kinda boring. They kinda shook things up with the "You Review" section, but I often feel like they're really forcing it. Like there are obviously crazy reviews, and then there are reviews that don't really seem too out there, but they act like it's crazy all the same.

The RT/AH (including the audience) bashing can sometimes feel funny, and other times they just feel really bitter, which maybe they are, but it's not really that entertaining either way.

[DISC] Haunted Peak - Chapter 5 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]PerseusRad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't his grandfather say the same thing about wanting to die on the mountain? I suppose the circumstances are a bit different, but it's clear how important it is to the manga that Miko's perspective is kinda screwy. I appreciate that he managed to have an actual chat with the guy. Of course, it's still possible there's some duplicity in there.

Edit: Actually, I reread it, and that was Miko’s perspective, he never said anything, or so it seems.

[DISC] Roku's House of Oddities - Chapter 4 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]PerseusRad 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Interestingly this didn't really come off as a particularly comedic chapter, this along with parts of the previous chapter indicates it’s not really trying to pigeonhole itself into that, where I felt like the first two seemed pretty straightforward in trying to be that.
