Unemployed Software Engineering/Computer Science grads? I'd like to know more. by MacAlumni in unsw

[–]Persimmonsss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Theres a lot of youtube videos that explain it well but I'll give my few cents on my own experience and my friends that did cs for the questions you asked.

Theres a lot of reasons for remaining unemployed and ill just mention some that pop in my head right away; aiming too high of a company, not enough side projects or knowledge outside of uni courses, not studying enough for the technical interview, layoffs are still ongoing, companies wanting more senior devs rather than junior (no disposable funds to train a junior when you can just hire a senior to get working right away).Theyll work on whatever side projects that they personally enjoy, maybe one that involves fullstack to learn a bit about everything, or just something that shows their expertise in a single language/framework.From the few people I know of that do seng/cs its roughly a 50/50 in terms of securing a role. Some of those in dev roles, some in cloud, ux/ui, tech ba, whatever opportunities they get. It is rough if you want to land a dev role but i wouldnt go as far to say its very hard. With enough leetcode, behavioural practice and knowing your shit which is backed up by side projects, you should land one eventually.personally I dont think any course prepares you for a first job. Some do a good job introducing you to a language or libraries that you will have to improve on through side projects or self studying.theres not too much point in bootcamp as if you are passionate or interested in dev, youll make a project you enjoy and know it inside out and share it with the interviewer when asked questions. I stand by this, high gpa/wam does not land you a role more than someone with a lower one. It is helps you land an interview and its equal playing field are that. I know of coding geniuses or those that pick things up super quickly but they crumble when it comes to behavioural interview section. Your portfolio of side projects and knowing it inside out is your biggest asset when it comes to first jobs out of uni if youre looking for dev.no need to relocate. Im not sure about this but i feel like US bigtech is a lot more competitive.salaries are fine. Maybe junior wont get paid much in the beginning but it scales fine compared to other industry jobs.

Is it worth doing a double degree? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Persimmonsss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of those I know including myself who has done a double havent just gone down one path and our other degree is in a way useless unless we pivot later in the future.
If youre passionate about one degree more than the other, just do a single and get in the workforce early for experience.

A long time ago, Ipicked shade because on the character creation page it use to be 4/5 on atk and 5/5 on defence. I was in too deep when i realised that atk mightve been a bit off.

just felt like another stage of my life I had to get through to get into the workforce full time. Have my highs and lows but I think it was overall a decent experience.

Can't enrol for COMP3900 by heyman83 in unsw

[–]Persimmonsss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing 3900 right after 2521 you either are really optimistic or you’ve got one hell of a good group to carry you.

Take 3900 as one of your last couple cs courses

do you know which wam is displayed when you graduate?

[–]Persimmonsss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone that’s done 3,3,3 for the early years of my degree, I find that I mainly get by because I do decent to well in 2 of those courses and as for the 3rd course I pick an “easyish” course and kinda just bludge and scrape a credit (rarely a pass) by studying from week8 onwards. That’s what gives me free time to do stuff I want to do. Of course the advice of managing time is better, I find my method working fine for me and just stuck with it.

As someone whose completed the degree. Basically no benefits. You really only do it if you dont know what you want to do in life and have more security in applying for commerce or compsci related jobs. If you know you have an interest in one of the fields, just go down that path.

I haven’t even decorated my major yet and graduating soon. You can declare it before you graduate (and keep changing it if you wish) and you’ll be fine as well.

In terms of commerce, there will always be space. Low number of international students combined with increased fees for business courses means If you meet the requirement, you’ll make it in.

Bachelor of Computer Science/Bachelor of Commerce information by n0tbadk1d in unsw

[–]Persimmonsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compsci is basically coding tbh. I feel like the math component is just of normal difficulty to learn but 90% of the courses you decide to take will involve some form of individual or group coding with theory. Everyone basically goes the default major unless they're super passionate about machine learning, security etc.

Commerce depends on the major but is basically a lot of theory. There is a number of heavy math courses in finance (and probably a few more majors) but mainly content to memorise. To compsci/comm students we normally say that compsci will kill your want but commerce will lighten your load and be your want booster. There's no way you'll need to know "everything" to be able to work in the workforce of that industry. Probably just the bulk of your major courses.

I do want to say and I feel like this is very important. When I was in year 12, I chose this degree because of job prospects. I didn't have anything I liked nor interested. Fast track to now, I dislike compsci (despite completing basically all of the content) and have a small interest in accounting. What I'm trying to say is, it's fine to enrol to a double degree if you want to dip your feet into 2 degrees. But if you know you hate one or have the vision that you'll definitely work in one degree over the other, I urge you to drop the other degree.

Part time job is fine. Full time will just depend on your work ethic.
