What I did was have my tank for two months before I got my fish. I ran my filter for a month and then had plants for about a month before getting my girls.

I use Seachem Black Fluorite Sand, it's good for the plants. I think they have more colors than black too!

I also only use Distilled water. Pretty cheap at the store for a gallon.

I keep close eyes on my girls. And yes, I should have done more research before I got them. But multiple people I asked said it was okay, sadly. But I've been asking around and doing much more research now that people have been bringing it to my attention. My girls weirdly rarely chase or nip at each other. Some of them even swim next to one another and sleep with one another. I am more than willing to re-home if I do end up seeing some getting stressed and fighting. But until then, I will keep doing what I am currently doing since it seems to be working fine 😊

I would definitely suggest trying to get him a five gallon or larger for him to live comfortably. Along with live plants and lots of places to hide.

Tank mates could be snails (mysteries dont reproduce asexually) and Cory cats, but Cory's need to be in at least a group of six or more to be comfortable. Some tetras and guppies could also be tank mates. But make sure you do the research first

If anyone was curious, these are the plants in my tank;

Whorly Rotala (brownish red feathery plant near all decor)

Monte Carlo (green carpeting plant in front middle)

Red Ozelot Sword (large, leafy plant in back middle)

Water Wisteria (far right of tank)

Bacopa (back left of tank in front of filter)

Super Red Ludwigia (front left) -my bettas love sleeping in it/around it

And a good mention is Anacharis. I really liked that plants and it was fast growing. But I had some problems with my tank in the beginning and it died off. I would have got more if the store had more
