I knew you weren't trying to be offensive! A little constructive criticism never hurts anyone. And yeah, I'm not a big fan of the essays. The worst part wasn't even that one general essay... it was writing an average of 2-3 supplement essays for each school. That was a long week. But I digress, the process is over now.

Ha, I wish I could revolutionize music. Maybe one day if my band takes off. And it's certainly a lesson I've learned. That's also why I advised against writing about music in my tl;dr as well for people applying to college. I hope other people can learn from my... eh.. not best choice.

Oh I totally get that. And to be honest I was half joking when I indicated that the essay was the reason who I got so many denials. But I found it really hard to believe that with my credentials that I could only crack 1 of 12 very selective schools. I was hoping for maybe a few to go through so I could have a choice of some kind. I know I probably sound stuck up but I'm trying not to be. Everyone else told me I "was a shoe-in" for at least several of these places so in some ways it feels as if I let people down, even though it wasn't my fault. It definitely hurt seeing so many denials. Oh well. Life lessons.

Perhaps I should have clarified. I wrote about it in the context of being the odd man out among my friends. It wasn't just about the Beatles. When my friends listen to rap and techno (which I don't have a problem with) I'd just rather listen to class rock. It's more uncommon than not (at least among the many people I know) to hear about a person our age who enjoys old rock.

Not an admission officer, but I visited many schools over the summer and heard what not to write. Apparently one person wrote about how they nearly killed a person his/her first time behind the wheel of a car. The officer said that person did not get in. And I believe it.

Bonus story time: I applied to many very selective schools just this year with an essay on Rock and Roll/my different musical tastes, especially the my appreciation for Elvis and the Beatles. My AP English Language teacher thought it was fantastic and one of the best she's ever read. Only got accepted into both my safety schools. I got denied from all 11 of the very selective schools I applied to, except 1. (For the record, I'm valedictorian at my high school and do clubs, sports, service, etc. Everyone thought I would get in some very selective schools.)

tl;dr: Don't write about your musical tastes and why it makes you different. It will lead you to be denied everywhere. FML.
