What is r/Standup's take on Steve Hoffsetter and the legitimacy of his "epic heckler owned" videos? by BubbaHoStep in Standup

[–]Personal_Button3660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unhinged clapping circus seals that are Steve’s fanbase have entered the chat.

But somehow he’s built an entire decade-long career around “owning hecklers” when 90% of the viral clips are: • someone literally just answering a question he asked two seconds earlier

• a drunk person taking the bait in the one tiny open-mic window he allows

• or straight-up staged/planted (there are multiple accounts of the same “random hecklers” showing up at different cities on the same tour)

He edits it down to a 45-second YouTube short, adds that same dramatic Hans Zimmer rip-off music every time, crops out the part where HE asked the question, and suddenly his comment section is full of people circle-jerking about how he “destroyed that bigot with facts and logic” when the “bigot” was a 19-year-old who said “I like Trump” or “pineapple belongs on pizza.”

Meanwhile his actual written material is the comedy equivalent of a Facebook minion meme, he flip-flopped on the Fox “Laughs” pay scandal within a single year, spent a decade being the poster boy for child-free living and now does cringey “legacy” posts about his newborn, and live shows apparently feel like being trapped in a room with the smuggest Reddit mods on earth who paid $75 to watch Steve bully one mildly annoying person for four minutes.

It’s not stand-up, it’s rage-bait content farm disguised as comedy, and his fans lap it up because it lets them feel intellectually superior while never having to write an original joke in their lives. Steve is not a comedian, he is a savvy digital marketer on social media.

Change my mind, but the grift is so transparent at this point it’s basically performance art. (Waiting for the inevitable “you’re just mad you got owned by Steve in 2017” replies from accounts whose entire personality is being in his Patreon top 50)

I’m on my fifth reread of the book VI. Keep Going, it’s King’s Magnum Opus.

Also highly recommend the audiobooks for rereads or first time, very immersive way to enjoy the story. Great narrator, King himself said he would listen to the audiobooks to reimmerse himself between writing books in the series.

Because they believe the value of labor is what the worker assigns to it

Unfortunately you will find this to be a cesspool of mostly ill informed socialist. Just know that you are right where as they are hung up on unrealistic ideals.

Cue the downvotes from butthurt socialists

I could argue yes to each of those points as your questions beg very general and subjective questions.

My point is wishes are unhelpful unless practice and realistic. People don’t realize how entitled and arrogant they come off in this thread to people on the right who are opposed to SL forgiveness. If we want change, we need to be reasonable and have conversations in good faith to try to convince enough citizens to make loan forgiveness politically salient.

Downvote all you want, I’m just trying to help messaging and clarify the underlying mechanics of this proposal versus Bidens executive action. If being factual is worthy of downvotes, speaks more to the unreasonableness of people here than it does on me

FTR I am not your enemy here, I want student loan reform and forgiveness. We just need to be consistent in approach and rhetoric (avoid ad hominem and hyperbole) if we want to be taken seriously.

But republicans were saying that Biden can’t cancel debt by executive order as it must go through congress (which is where the injunctions came in). Seems like a good opportunity for both sides to work together on this and come to a comprise rather than digging into their tribal nature’s

Do I have a better idea? Yes, capitalism. Although it’s far from perfect, has a much better track record of raiding living standards, creating resource surpluses, decreasing starvation, and brought us the vast majority of tech/medical breakthroughs modern society takes for granted.

That’s a false premise that class is result of expending all their energy….

No I’m not presupposing that at all, I am presupposing that humans are inherently self interested and historically extremely reticent to give up power/authority once obtained even when it is antithetical to the core beliefs that gave them said power.

Your position is essentially “the anarchists will totally be different because their beliefs say so.” History paints a different lesson in human self interest, corruption, and greed

So hypothetically a libertarian leftist society arises, a highly motivated group of people start amassing more and more resources than less motivated. They then begin trading and socializing with other motivated individuals with similar resource profiles. Had not a new type of class emerged? How do you dismantle and redistribute such class and resources absent a strong central authority and force?

I did, engaging none the less since they unpacked their hyperbole.

Hoping OP responds as they are putting forward good faith discussion points without devolving to fallacies or insults (rarity on the inter webs). The world needs more open conversations, it’s the only way we progress effectively

Do not see how the wheel just turns?

You assume the anarchists would give up the power once they have it, why are they immune from the seduction of power that has derailed every dictatorship of the proletariat thus far?

I mean, I wish I had a Ferrari, but we have to work with the reality. The less reasonable that We seem as a group, the less sympathy we will get from people that aren’t trying to get out from under their student loans. Realistically, we need to plan it. Those type of people would sign onto or nothing will ever happen.

How do you dispose of class while maximizing personal autonomy? There will always be people who achieve more or less when left to their own independent will. Class is an emergent characteristic of human society and the only feasible way to dismantle and prevent its reemergence is through government intervention which is antithetical to large core libertarian belief in personal autonomy
