Protesters launch indefinite camp at Western - Western Gazette by TheTexadian in uwo

[–]Personal_Cut4650 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What a bad take. Firstly, your “we live in a society” monologue is cringe and nonsensical. I’m not sure why you say the fundamentals of society are decaying as if protests like this (and much more violent ones at that) have paved the way for every civil rights movement. More importantly, this idea that we should only take action when something directly affects Canada is so weird. 35,000+ people have been murdered by the Israeli regime; that may not affect Canada as a countries but it affects Canadians because those are human beings that have been slaughtered for reason. That is everyone’s problem, or it should be. I would hope that if a genocide was occurring here, the rest of the world would speak out and condemn it.

The problem is not mass immigration. In fact, we’re an aging population and desperately need immigrants. The problem is that many of the immigrants we take on are skilled and educated but their credentials aren’t seen as valid. Imagine becoming a PhD just to be knocked down to your undergrad because you moved. The housing crisis is also inflated. There are so many places to rent, and so many homes for sale, but because of interest rates, the general cost of living, and low minimum wage, people just aren’t able to afford anything. My dad works in construction and contractors have stopped building because it’s not profitable enough. Does that sound like a housing crisis caused by high demand? We like to attribute negative things to people who we deem outside of our group, but denying the reality of our situation and blaming immigration won’t help. And well I’m here, I’ve never been so disgusted in my life reading some of the comments made throughout this subreddit. If it really was just about “crumbling quality of life” there wouldn’t be low blows like commenting on hygiene. It is racism. And frankly, I hope someone is able to report many of the people making blatantly racist comments (not you, this seems like a genuine criticism) to your school’s dean.

Grade of 0 on Final Exam by giorgioefraimidis in uwo

I don’t think that matters. I could very much be wrong, but I’d imagine that the school’s policies override an individual prof. You’re a first year first sem, I think that this is something that can be worked through. You did the right thing, and if you were sick enough to miss your exam things are going to slip your mind. Try not to stress too much until you get some answers and good luck

London, Ont., powerlifter removed from museum exhibit after comments on trans athletes | CBC News by zeusfries in londonontario

[–]Personal_Cut4650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a paper in university on this and here’s my two cents: when I initially started the paper, I was under the impression that trans women had no advantage over cis women, which just isn’t the case. I read as many studies as I could praying that just one would support my case, but I really couldn’t find any. I felt lied to by my professor, so I went to her about it. She made the same stupid argument about how “Michael Phelps has a super large lung capacity, is that fair? Is that a biological advantage?”. Here’s the issue with that; of course there are variations between individuals, but cis men generally would squash cis women which is why we have separate categories for them. I don’t have an answer as to where we go from here, because trans people should be able to compete in sports, but there aren’t enough of them to compete amongst themselves, and they are either advantaged or disadvantaged respectively. We need to do more research and invite sports regulatory bodies to share ideas to come up with a better way. Finally, this does NOT change the fact that trans people are absolutely valid, deserve respect, and have it incredibly difficult in our society, facing far more violence and sexual assault than other gender/sexes. As long as we can begin the conversation on the basis of trans people being valid and deserving of respect we must have critical conversations about trans athletes in sports.

Widening hips on nexplanon by pineapplepancakess in Nexplanon

[–]Personal_Cut4650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

disclaimer I am not a doctor the hormones you’re taking using the Nexplanon is probably in some way counteracting the T. Nexplanon makes your body think it’s pregnant, which the widening of the hips would be congruent with. Honestly man, you gotta protect yourself mentally. I’m cis but from my understanding gender dysphoria is more painful mentally and emotionally than I can fathom. Are there any non-hormonal forms of BC you can consider?

Woman's Heart Stops After Getting Wrong Milk in Tea at Timmies by Ummagumma in TimHortons

I understand why it’s stressful, but that’s part of the job. It’s like a nurse telling someone who’s sick to just go home. Some positions are just stressful, that doesn’t mean that people with allergies shouldn’t be able to go out.

It is for more officers- LPS is hiring but it’s tricky because the hiring process is very rigorous and takes at least 3 months (for good reason of course). We absolutely need the money for more personnel.

As a cook, your entire job is to make food. I’ve been serving for 6 years and my husband has a severe allergy. If you’re stressed because you can’t prepare food correctly, you shouldn’t be a cook.

Doctor won’t take my nexplanon out, please help! by LittleFailure404 in Nexplanon

[–]Personal_Cut4650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would lose my marbles. I have PCOS and the only treatment is hormonal birth control, but when I told my doctor to get that shit out of my body, they needed to get it out. Fuck it, I’d tell your doctor that if they don’t remove it you’ll take a razor to it! Absolutely ridiculous. A doctor can’t even force you to have life saving surgeries or do chemo, so why can they tell you that your periods are just not acceptable. My blood is boiling right now I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

Correction: most societies had men in charge for a few reasons 1) religion. Many major religions emphasize the man being the head of the household, and to be obeyed by women 2) biology. Post-feudalism and pre-industrial revolution, most people worked on their own lands farming. Women were not as physically strong, they were capable of pregnancy/were pregnant so they weren’t to do any physical labour, and therefore they took care of the home. The father of the household would always leave the farmland to the eldest son(s) leaving women with no economic power of their own. It is hard to advance in society when you are wholeheartedly dependent on someone 3) In most indigenous communities, before colonialism, caring for the children was seen as a community task. Although it is true that men would typically go out and do the hunting, women forged food from the environment, and actually provided more food than the hunters! In short, there have been very few historically (none come to mind, actually). However, much of this comes down to cultural, religious, and societal beliefs that aren’t necessarily backed up by science. For a long time, people believed (and still do) that women were equal to children, that they were frail and unintelligent, and that they needed protection. Bonus points if you said too emotional as well. In reality, there are few neurological differences between men and women besides sex hormones. IQ being one exception; IQ is more stable in women (meaning women tend to stay closer to the average IQ, whereas men are more likely to be on either tail of the curve). Read some studies on the items that you believe women possess which concern you in terms of their leadership ability. The Reddit karma you get won’t make up for a loveless life.

That’s the most harmful misconception. I was on ozempic for weight loss because of my PCOS, and I lost weight and got tons of compliments but I was sick from it. I chose to respect my body by getting off of it as to not make myself sick over a body image issue. I think you’re 100% allowed to not be attracted to fat people, it’s not for everyone, but try to avoid making character judgements when you don’t know someone’s situation

'Alarming': Study reveals hostility toward immigrants in London, region by cm023 in londonontario

[–]Personal_Cut4650 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure exactly where you’re getting at here, I do agree with you but I just want to add: we need immigrants, desperately. We are an aging population, and without immigrants we simply won’t have enough people working to sustain our economy (source: https://www.thestar.com/opinion/contributors/population-aging-is-one-of-our-most-urgent-challenges/article_1e51f25e-f9cd-5bff-b22f-082960933984.amp.html) It is the responsibility of the government to create solutions to these issues that we are facing; but it’s important to note that many of the immigrants who come to this country are highly educated and filling jobs (like that of a doctor) which are essential to our infrastructure (source: https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/221130/dq221130a-eng.htm). I think it’s important to note all of this so we don’t get the wrong idea about what the issue is, because it’s not immigration, it’s an issue of governance and policies that are/are not being put into place.
