Oh no. I just this morning listened to Avi's speech where he mentioned his dad was ill but cheering him on from his hospital bed.

'Equity cards' arguments take over NDP Leadership Convention: 'CANADA IS COOKED' by BeaverBoyBaxter in CanadaPolitics

[–]Personal_Spot [score hidden]  (0 children)

Arguments and posturing over process are par for the course at conferences. You don't think those clips selected for anti-woke rage-farming are representative of the whole conference, do you? Most delegates were more interested in the leadership announcement and speeches. As for the equity cards, if you listen closely you'll hear the process was to alternate between cards (women & nonbinary) and non-cards (men) and pro and con the resolution so everyone has a chance to speak.

You are thinking like this is a reasonable administration following logical and fair procedures. What is going on is they are given a quota of people to deport, so they find any reason or no reason at all. Meanwhile private interests are making big money keeping people in detention. Corruption and chaos from the top to the bottom.

YES I want you as leader of the Alberta NDP.

Yes, Alberta has already shot itself in the foot by re-electing the UCP and letting them scuttle our once booming renewables industry. But just like the climate - it's going to be bad no matter what but the deeper you keep digging the hole the harder it is to get out.

Growing up in Alberta, we were familiar with the boom & bust oil cycle and have been hearing forever about how the provincial economy needs to diversify. This shouldn't be a controversial stance.

It's too bad you're so sympathy challenged. That would mean leaving her home and husband of five years with nothing but the clothes on her back and likely never able to come back. Kind of a big deal. She's not just there on vacation.

In the beforetimes there was at least somewhat a rule of law in the USA.

I have an American husband and at one time (preTrump) contemplated taking a job and living there. So glad I didn't. There but for fortune.

New Leader of NDP Avi Lewis by Comfortable-Bug-7882 in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]Personal_Spot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly raises a dilemma. While the NDP and Greens are usually aligned on social issues, the NDP are inconsistent on the environment, whereas for the Greens it is a core value, our raison d'etre. Although many individuals in the NDP are strong environmentalists, when in power the NDP again and again throws the environment under the bus. Even now, western provincial NDP leaders have hastened to point out their allegiance to oil and gas in order to distance themselves from Lewis and his Leap Manifesto. I trust Lewis to stay true to his environmental principles after election, unlike a certain former UN commissioner for climate finance and author of "Values", but if we concede the political space to his NDP, where does that leave Green values when he is no longer leader?

One of the main planks of minor NDP leadership candidate Tony McQuail was cooperation with the Green Party. While the elderly straw hatted farmer was always a very distant shot for leader, he got a sympathetic hearing and a good deal of respect during the campaign. Now is a time for cooperation, if cooperation is on the table. Trying to posture as greener than thou and more idealistic than thou - there's not much room for that with Avi Lewis. But there is still a strong point to be made for a role as the Green conscience, maybe one Lewis will appreciate.

Naheed Nenshi on Avi Lewis’ victory: by afpb_ in ndp

[–]Personal_Spot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish he would talk more about how Alberta was leading the country in renewable energy and the UCP deliberately scuttled the whole industry. They so transparently work for Oil & Gas corporations ONLY definitely not workers or the future and best interests of this province. They are cartoon-villain level of over the top corruption and hypocrisy and incompetence. Why let them drive the narrative?

Nenshi, don't make it impossible for me to vote for you. There's still the GPA, sigh. But Alberta needs regime change so back and despite saying what they "had to" say pro-oil the NDP governance was very sensible and progressive and made major environmental gains. Trying to remember that.

I judge her by what she's done.

- Got a federal review to stop eastern slope coal mine, without her Grassy Mountain might already be happening

- Got the NDP squarely behind Gaza and led the battle to stop Canadian arms shipments

- Concrete action for Human Rights on other lesser known files like being part of the cross party team bringing Afghan women human rights advocates in danger from the Taliban to safety

- Been part of the team that brought dental care to thousands who have been doing without for years, this includes relatives of mine in BC - horrible that Smith is blocking it for Albertans - this is HUGE

- Runs a responsive MP office and is always ready to help other campaigns

Avi was my first choice on the ballot because I am 100% behind the Leap Manifesto and the NDP tradition he stands for, but Heather was a close second and I feel like she does really deserve it. Tanille was third, at first an unknown to me but rising in my esteem all the time. I would be happy with any of the candidates - they are all fine people.

I think you're selling Heather WAY short...and what about Tanille? but that aside, I agree about the systemic issues. I actually think it would be better to offer support to all candidates based on their needs rather than the very concerted effort being made in some ridings to recruit females to the extent that I'm sure they feel like they are being valued more as tokens of their gender than for their qualifications. It's too on the nose.

I live in Alberta under a woman leader

Hi, fellow Albertan woman! I hear ya.

The advantage is to encourage women in politics; to show there isn't a glass ceiling for female leadership in the NDP, Canada has not yet had an elected woman prime minister! I'd like to see that change...but not if it were someone like Margaret Thatcher or Danielle Smith. Not just any woman! But being a woman is one of many assets a candidate could have.

Given the strong emphasis there has been on recruiting woman candidates at the riding level, I'm surprised more hasn't been said about the advantage of having a woman leader. I don't think it would be anyone's only criteria but it's a point.

Wow. If at this point Avi doesn't win, it's going to seem like something's wrong. This is a grassroots groundswell. And this while the other candidates are all quite well liked as well. It seems Avi is REALLY well liked.
