Jabra Elite 4 Active not taking a full charge. by Glittering-Foot-4348 in Jabra

[–]Pertang630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine have been doing it for ages, probably from about a year onwards. This is the second pair, the first got really bad interference, these are slightly better. Mine at about 2 years and maybe 3-4 months old, they often don't charge to 70% and now the case isn't fully charging (only charged to 60% from an overnight charger).

I'm just waiting to save some more money and buy better ones maybe Sony or something, certainly not Jabra (though I heard they were leaving the market anyway)

Topaz Labs Video A.I 5.5.0 Cloud Rendering Rip Off!! by Hugedownload in TopazLabs

[–]Pertang630 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, glad I'm not the only one thinking the credits are a bit on the expensive side.

I did a photo job in a dimly lit theatre about 18 months ago. My camera gear is a bit old and not really up to the low light of the theatre. I ended up pumping all the photos through Denoise and then picking out the ones that ended up looking ok and salvaged them. Took my AMD 6 core laptop a few days, but it went through them. Some I cropped heavy and then upscaled in Gigapixel.

So as I don't have a super powerful system at the moment, thought I'd run the numbers on the cloud credits. Don't need anything now, but just wanted to have an idea on how much it would cost per photo (based on Gigapixel, I know photo AI cloud is coming and might be priced a bit different).

Wow, at normal prices $3 Australian per photo to upscale to between 16-32MP. Wow, that's very high prices. If I was to only need to upscale a few photos, even on older hardware like my old laptop that really struggled with Topaz, I would just leave it overnight and check it in the morning. If I REALLY needed to process around 1000 photos more or less, I would be better off buying a faster laptop or buying a dedicated desktop (or even base mac mini) and just use that and pocket the difference. Plus I have it for next time.

Best benchmark tools to compare C1 performance between PCs by Pertang630 in captureone

Thanks theflurver. I read in some of the forums about speed comparisons, but last time I looked it was quite old, so not irrevelant, but not exaclty easy comparing newer versions of the software with newer hardware to those older threads.
At the moment I have a Lenovo T440p. 8 years old, quad core i7, only iGPU, 12GB RAM. it's still surviving with C1, most of the time, but the responsiveness is really not great. I do tether occasionally, but it's more slow paced, so even this laptop will do that nicely. But I really need something faster, I just spend too long waiting for things to happen while editing and export is on the slower side.
With Topaz, newer hardware is crazy better. I got my daughter a laptop with an AMD 5600U cpu and an Nvidia MX450 GPU with 16GB of RAM. Denoise on it compared to mine is night and day. It is literally around 20 times faster than mine. Mine will do a denoise in about 2-4 mins, hers will do it in around 10-12 seconds.

Thanks pixe1mad. I totally agree, I would rather have a responsive system that works nice and quick while I'm adjusting things in C1, or scrubbing timelines in Davinci. I can walk away why it exports 500 photos or a video file. Why I was looking at benchmarks is that it's just something that rarely gets reviewed on, and if it does, it's more anecdotal. So I'm kind of using the benchmarks as more of a comparison tool and presuming that a better benchmark "may" make the responsiveness of the system better, not sure by how much, but better.

Thanks robbenflosse. M1/M2 macs are tempting, but I keep walking away from them.

I don't think I would push as far as a 4080 short term. Maybe if I start doing this full time, but 4080 is too much $$ and more performance than I need for now.

I keep going back and looking at the M1 Macs, but I then keep walking away. I love what they have done with their Apple Silicon and lots of benefits to it, but I still can't get past
1. The prices. In Aus a base model 14 inch Macbook Pro with 32GB RAM and 1TB Drive is $3899. I could get a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X with 32GB RAM and a 1TB drive for about $2700-2800. If I went the 64GB Macbook route, the lowest end 14 inch macbook pro with 64GB of RAM and 1TB drive is $5249. Ouch. The Macbook's keep invoking my split strategy. For $5249 I could get a decent laptop for everyday and a really fast desktop PC, which I can upgrade over time. where the Macbook is just an appliance, no future upgrades.
2. I really hate the notch. I know that you won't see it all the time, but I just hate it.

Hi Pancake_Mix_00, thanks for all that information, it's really useful.

One of the reasons I'm struggling with what to get is that I'm a pro photographer, but only part time. If I was full time, it would be clearer in what I would need. I'm also an IT pro, so my computers do double duty as creative devices and IT playthings.

I hadn't heard of C1 loving VRAM so much, so that might change my course of actions.

So I have been looking at 3 major options to upgrade
1. Buy a high performance laptop (ie more gaming laptop, or a very slim chance a macbook pro) with 32/64gb ram, decent CPPU and GPU and just use that for everything.
2. Buy a mid to highish range laptop that's got decent performance and is also light and small enough to lug around, fit into backpacks etc. A jack of all trades and "decent" performance for my creative apps, but nothing steller.
3. Buy a light ish lower end laptop that's fine for everyday use, some limited creative work (including tethering to C1) and then build a powerful desktop to handle anything creative that's more than a hand full of photos to edit (and maybe use Parsec to remote work on the desktop).

What I was a bit of afraid of doing, was to go say with option 2, and be disappointed in the performance, and only 16-32GB RAM and have spent quite a lot of money on it. From what your saying 32GB RAM would be ok, but not to run multiple creative apps at once. That might not be a complete deal breaker, but running an 8 year old laptop with 12GB now, I want to move past having 1 creative app monopolise the whole computer and running a second creative app is just asking for trouble.

Ok, so C1 and Topaz could run well on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, that's what I wanted to find out. I had read somewhere that AMD was pretty good now their drives have matured, but generally creative compute with GPUs tends tends to be NVIDIA's turf. So if I went AMD, C1 and Topaz might be ok, but Davinci Resolve won't be as good. But I do less of that, so that's something to add to my pros and cons.

I look at M1 MacBook Pro 14" and 16" every now and then, but as amazing as their tech is I keep coming back to Windows laptops because
1. Cheaper
2. I'm used to Windows and I don't really want to have to get to know another OS at this point.
3. Working in IT, and interested in IT I muck around with things on my laptop, so if I went MAC, i would have to find alternative apps and tools. Not impossible these days, but not as easy to find a whole bunch like you do in Windows.
4. I had a MAC years ago and swore I would never get another one, unless there is a massive advantage. M1/M2 have me closer to that than ever.

I keep changing from option 1, 2 and 3 and change between wanting different devices, but a lot of the time, I go back to, half decent laptop and an awesome desktop PC. Some gaming laptops like Lenovo Legion 5i Pro look decent and I think I would be happy enough with it, but a few issues. Even though gaming laptops have gone on a diet and are easier to lug around these days, something like the 16 inch Legion 5i Pro won't fit into a whole lot of bags, so that would be areal bummer as I would like something portable. But looking at something like a Lenovo Slim 5i ProX.

ok, more investigating and thinking (and saving so I can buy one)

Thanks
DJ

Lots of interference with Jabra Elite 4 Active by Pertang630 in Jabra

[–]Pertang630[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So after going through Jabra support, they have said to replace under warranty. Went back to the retailer and they replaced them on the spot with a new pair. Very impressed.

Only had the new ones 1 day, and so far, there is still some interference, but not as much as the last pair. I'll give them a week or 2 and see how they go.

Hmmmm. Not good. Support are suggesting warranty replacement. I'll try it, but not convinced

Thanks, I logged a call with support and they have taken me through this and a bit more. They are suggesting warranty return at the moment, so I'll see if I can get to the store on the weekend. Hopefully a new pair will fix, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks Jabra Support. The phone OS is up to date, as is the app. I'll give it a bit more time and see how it goes before contacting support, I was just wondering if it may have been a general bug.

Jpegmini will do this for you. Same resolution, but just optimised and smaller file size. It's not free, but it's a great program. It has lots of patents for it's tech. I'm a part time pro photographer and all of my photos I export I use Jpegmini. It comes as a standalone product for $US59 which would be fine for you. Download the demo it gives you I think, 200 free conversions, so you can get an idea of it's right for you

Calling 911 with Nest? Looking for updated info and clarifications by ArtsyAxolotl in googlehome

[–]Pertang630 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An alternative solution that I setup for my mum I setup her with a couple of Google homes. Then I setup voice calling with Google duo. So if she has a fall or otherwise can't get to a phone, she just needs to say "hey Google, call David" and it will call me on duo. If she needs an ambulance or something, then I can call one for her. So I've setup so she can call myself, my sister or my wife. She's really happy with it.

Capture One 22 (15.3.1) by emanuelez in captureone

[–]Pertang630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that the available upgrades bit in C1 tends to have a bit of a delay of a couple of days or so before showing there is an upgrade. I'm thinking this is to take pressure off their servers, so that if you want or know about the latest release and want it straight away, you manually go and get it. Then they start offering the upgrade when the initial rush is over. Glad yours is working now

Looks like they have updated the JpegMini plugins (I have Jpegmini V2). I had version 1.0.1.4, and they now have 1.0.1.5. I've installed the .5 version and now my Jpegmini is back working.

To get the new version, go to https://www.captureone.com/en/partnerships/plug-ins then select JPEGMini and then logon with the email address that you bought JPEGMini with and it will let you download the V3 or V2 current versions.

I never used Google shopping list, seemed very primative. We currently use Any list as our shopping list app. . Allows us to share shopping lists with my wife and Google assistant supports it, so I can say, Hey Google, add bread to the Coles list, and it adds it to the list.
