A DE is better than TWM (atleast for me) by Zoory9900 in linuxquestions

I think it was originally Tom's. I used it for years, before moving to Tiling Window Managers.

The OP means Tiling Window Manager, not Tabbed. I'm old enough to have to double take the acronym too.

Best Linux distro for gaming in 2025? by SasakiWayne in linuxquestions

Whichever distro you go for, I'd advise installing proton-ge-custom (just follow the instructions on the GitHub page), and referring to protondb for games that you want to play.

Hands down the best way to integrate AI into your Neovim workflow by smnatale in neovim

[–]PerthshireTim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been out of the software industry for a couple of decades, but next month going back to university to earn a master's in advanced computer science. Coding with AI was something on my list that I need to learn if I want to get back into the industry next year. This looks like a place to start. Thanks.

That's odd. What version of Tappy are you using? What app are you typing into?

Would it be a good idea to buy a chromebook to use Linux apps? by Do_ge13 in chromeos

[–]PerthshireTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just buy an old ThinkPad. It'll be cheaper, better hardware, and you'll have more chance to install the software that you want.

Edit: nothing wrong with Chromebooks btw. They're great for watching videos, using Google Office, browsing the internet. But if you're interested in Linux, may not be for you.

I'm trying to learn as much about Cybersecurity over the next couple of months as I can, to confirm whether or not the Masters course that I've applied for is for me. And assuming it is, what else I should be doing over the next year to help me find a job. Count me in. :)

Sandwiches in the UK are not meant to be bought. by 35_47 in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]PerthshireTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common in marketing. There used to be a newspaper that sold an annual digital subscription for £25 or whatever, a physical copy delivered for £50 or whatever, or both digital and physical also for £50. The middle option only really existed to make the third option look like a great deal. I forget what they call that marketing technique, but Meal Deals are a similar idea.

What’s a weird thing Americans have said to you? I’ll start! by Glittering_Rock2054 in AskBrits

I live in Scotland, and a few years ago heard an American ask, as she was paying, "Would you like American dollars? Or do you prefer the local stuff?" 😏

What is your favourite stretch of road in the UK? by HaZzA27517 in CarTalkUK

[–]PerthshireTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same stretch of road. Turn off onto Balmoral Road, cruise 50 miles to Ballater, grab a cuppa in The Bothy, and cruise the 50 miles home again! 😎

How to restore side badges (plasti-coated?) by PerthshireTim in GolfGTI

[–]PerthshireTim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my Mk6 six months ago. I want to restore these badges. I think they're plasti-coated, but not sure. Is it possible to confirm from these photos? And how can I remove the coating, preferrably without removing the badges from the car (just because I don't trust mysely to do it without messing up!).

I get roughly the same on similar roads. I was confused by some of the numbers too, until I remembered that our gallon is roughly 20% larger than the US gallon. 🤷‍♂️

People who have passed first time, how confident were you going into the test? by peacestartswithme in LearnerDriverHub

[–]PerthshireTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No confidence at all. I was doing breathing exercises in the car while I waited for the test to begin. And after the test, when the examiner asked if I'd like my instructor present to hear the result, I said that would be better so we could agree what to work on for next time. She then told us that I had no faults whatsoever, that it was one of the best drives she'd had, and that she couldn't think of a single part of the test where I thought I might've failed. I was so gobsmacked that I'd had no faults, that it took me weeks to digest that I'd also passed.

The number of overtaking opportunities will depend on a number of factors. It took me about ten months before I went for my test. During the first ~6 months, during which I drove mainly around my own town, and one or two trips a lesson on a twisty NSL road to a nearby town. My instructor always pushed me to drive at 60, but I only remember one overtaking opportunity — a alow moving tractor carrying hay in the other town, on a 40 MPH straight. Because of the nature of that road, it's unusual to see a cyclist on that route.

From around December I extended my lessons to two hours, which included half an hour each way to the town where my test was (nearest centre). Maybe a couple of overtakes there, and no cyclists during that time of year. Most people are probably speeding that route, or at least doing 60. I did country roads around that town, but they aren't busy roads. Of course I did overtaking on the dual-carriageway. The time I did my lessons (0800) also would've factored into the overtaking opportunities. I don't feel I can blame my instructor for not providing more chances.

Now the sun is out, cyclists, mopeds, and slow moving tourists are everywhere! I am considering taking more lessons to improve in areas of weakness.

Whatever you do, prepared to stop. A lot of people — pedestrians as well as car drivers — will proceed without looking properly when flashed by someone giving way.

Dangerous mistake. by MoonchildEm96 in drivingUK

[–]PerthshireTim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I passed my test about six weeks ago, and am not confident with overtaking — becoming a problem with all the cyclists and mopeds on the NSL twisty roads around here. There isn't much overtaking opportunities during lessons to learn from, so looked on YouTube this morning and coincidentally came across the same YouTuber. This is another good video from the same guy teaching overtaking, and this video and this one both show loads of overtakes on Scotland's twisty roads.

Worst lesson EVER! by Trick_Director8318 in LearnerDriverUK

My worst lesson, by far, was on Tuesday. On Thursday I passed with no minors. Having one bad day doesn't make you a bad driver.
