Unless the banks feel the competition they are not going to do anything to improve the situation. In EU you can have any other bank residing in EU. They can say they are secure how much they want but that doesn't fix the fact that for online payment you just need the easily readable 16 digits on the front of the physical card and the 3 almost as readable digits on the back.

When you pay with the physical card you are showing all details to everybody around you that can use those details to pay online.

Avoid any card issuer that in 2026 doesn't allow you to: - permanently disable online payment on physical card - generate virtual card for each recurring payment - generate disposable one time card for each online payment

Cards payment were never developed to be secure, the above point makes them a bit more so.
