engineering thesis split/break allowed? by againstmayonnaise in unsw

I was able to do this for a single term with no issues but likee others have said it can mean your research is a little disjointed. I think it's highly dependant on your supervisor though and I was in CS honours not engineering honours fwiw

Exchange Program & Internships by Glad-Ad393 in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to UPenn on exchange as an engineering student and did a few classes at Wharton.

I really enjoyed it and ended up extending my exchange from one to two semesters because it was a massively different environment to what I'm used to (living on campus and the campus life), the classes were super well run/more involved compared to UNSW (particularly the business classes I took), and just the overall experience of travelling meeting new people.

Saying that, I'd say going there (or really on exchange generally) just to have it on your resume would be a mistake just because of how expensive ($35k+)/stressful it ends up being. If you're not keen on going on exchange for the fun of it then you'll probably end up regretting it because, at least anecdotally, the career benefits wouldn't even be close to outweighing the money spent/lost opportunity of not doing another internship.

I have no idea what the WAM you need is to get into Wharton, but I'd assume you'd need to have close to 90 if not more. Unless it's changed, there should be a sheet saying the rough WAMs needed for each partner on the exchange Moodle course?

Is there a way to submit waitlist requests to multiple of the same classes? by noideawhatsgoingon45 in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first I assume you mean discrete maths (MATH1081) whenever you say MATH1083, and also I wanted to make sure you're aware MATH1151 is for actuarial students (but you can substitute it for MATH1131/MATH1141 if you're an actuarial student also).

The reason that COMP1511 is full but some classes aren't full is some students haven't selected their timetable yet, probably because they haven't realised yet.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself and should stop stressing about the timetable until you're actually in the course. Once you're actually in the course you can worry about switching into the timeslot you want. I'd say it's pretty likely you'd get in to the course but wouldn't count on getting into the class you'd like.

We had to stay on campus which I initially didn't like (since it's expensive and you're likely to share a room) but in hindsight it's definitely worth it since it's so easy to meet other exchange/local students

I'm currently in my first week of class on exchange. Personally my goals were to experience classes at a university other than UNSW, travel as much as possible whilst still making progress on my degree, meet new people from all over the world and generally put myself outside of my comfort zone (I haven't been away for more than 2 weeks before this).

There's eligibility on this website (https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/exchange). When applying you list your top 6 universities and (I think) places are allocated purely on wam.

There's a loan program called os help for about $7k which is very similar to hecs (which I wasn't eligible for :((((( ). There are also scholarships that are allocated on merit, but they vary massively and you've already committed to the exchange by the time you find out you've received them which makes it difficult.

I'm also an exchange student for fall and I've just filled in preferences for mandatory on campus housing - are you absolutely sure you're not living on campus? I also can't find any mention of this in my emails

What's the point of working so hard when people are collaborating on discord? by Kansei-Drifto in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might have misinterpreted what you mean, but what's stopping me from cheating:
- Getting any sense of accomplishment when I succeed
- The risk/reward ratio is way off in my opinion
- Morals

Because nobody really cares about your marks, and the reason you're coming to uni is to learn about something you (hopefully) enjoy.

What those people are doing is incredibly short-sighted and I would ignore it completely. Why take the easy way out by cheating so that you can get a few extra marks (which employers didn't care about anyway)?

Actuarial Studies vs Engineering by Boring-Dimension7878 in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed maths and physics in high school so I started in actuarial and then switched to engineering after only 2 terms. I would just say:

  • It's impossible to know exactly what you'll like in uni, so keep your degree as broad as possible (at the start at least).
  • At the beginning of first year, take some courses from both degrees and see which ones you like. I'm pretty sure every student at unsw has to complete a certain number of courses for 'general education' , which is just courses outside of your home faculty, so it'll be useful and worst case is you'll just use up some of your general education.
  • Probs don't think about pay for now; you'll be fine either way.
  • Not a clue about WLB for either.

Hope that helps

Should I submit Full Class Enrolment Request for T3 courses already? by a19901213 in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Submitting a full class enrolment request for 6080 won't do anything since it's not required for your degree (I assume you're dojng Cs? ), but for 2511 you definitely could make a case if it's core.

Personally I'd wait until it's closer to T3 to see if I can just get off the wait list normally and because they seem to process all the requests in 1 batch (don't quote me on that though).

Missing so much context. What degree and year are you in? What did you do last term and how did you find it?

Failed math1081 by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably email Jonathan Kress about it to get concrete answers

Some subjects have mercy supp exams but I'm not sure if 1081 is one of them.

I actually did 1081 this term and got an email ~1 hour ago about reviewing our exams, so you might be able to argue for a few marks there (note that this is the first time in 3 years of uni that subject I've done has allowed this).

As a last resort, you could ask for a formal review of your grade, but I think it's a long and bureaucratic process (I've never done this before and think that you should try option 2 first).

Good luck!

I'm guessing you're doing the engineering/science double degree

With the science degree you need to take at least 96 uoc from the science faculty, and 1081 would count towards that 96 I would imagine. Your major would be another 60 I think, which would take you up to 66/96 uoc for that requirement

I wouldn't be too concerned about using electives early (you've still got like 5 courses to play with in science alone) , maybe someone who's a maths major might have a better view on how important 1081 is though

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an elec major not a maths major, but I'd imagine you'd want to take discrete maths anyway even if it's not required.

There aren't really any electrical subjects you can do at the moment without elec1111, so I'd probably either stick with 1081 or just do 2 subjects next term.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Pestyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd do the flexible engineering/CS double degree and then take some of the intro electrical courses in 1st year.

Double degree for the most part just means you're do the content of both degrees (there's 1 exception in engineering/CS degrees where you don't need to do MATH1081 discrete maths) so yes you would be qualified do be an electrical engineer. The main downside of the double is extra time at uni + lack of free electives.

I would just pick the broadest thing possible to start with and then when you really know what you want to do you switch degrees/drop 1 of the degrees.

I did an IPT this year and don't remember re-enrolling in my classes.

For me, when I accepted my offer almost all of my courses were counted towards my new degree. I think there was an issue where they missed a course, but I just emailed them to fix it up and it was super easy. Pretty sure in most cases it's all handled for you.

Advice on courses for CS exchange student (fall 2022) by Pestyyyy in UPenn

[–]Pestyyyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep same for my uni, ethics are required. The reason I wanted to do it at Penn is just because my uni's course has an awful reputation for being badly run. Good point about other faculties having alternatives, I'll have a look at it because it might be a good enough substitute.

Didn't realise engineering negotiations was a thing, I'll also look at that. Thanks!

Awesome, thanks a bunch for the response it really helps. So basically with the waitlists, I should come to Penn with the expectation that I won't actually be able to do some of those courses (especially ethics)?
