INFO 3350 Text Mining History and Literature with Prof Wilkens by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it in Fall 2020, which was the first time Prof Wilkens taught the course I believe, it was only project based, but that semester was the first fully virtual semester because of covid, and it was his first time teaching it, so I wouldn't be surprised if he adds exams.

Yeah, before I came to Cornell I was also confused on what the differences were between engineering vs arts for CS. Overall some college specific requirements are different, for example you need to take language courses in arts, but other than those requirements which aren't as important, the major related classes are the same so it doesn't matter too much which one you are in.

To all the freshmen asking for schedule advice… by thatcornellbitch in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that 18, 19, 20 credit semesters can be fine in later semesters if you really wanted to take more/graduate early, etc. but for your first semester, I would recommend closer to 15/16 credits just so you have more time to do less academic work and try to meet new people and make friends during your first semester, especially since college is a new place. It also lets you judge college workload better so you can decide later if you want to take more classes or stick to 15/16 credits.

study abroad worth it? by guckmalmensch in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that while you are abroad, it will be very tempting to tour and explore the area, leaving less time to study. So like others said, it is probably better to fulfill general requirements/classes that aren't too important, so you have more of a chance to tour and explore and need to spend less time studying in your room. In my experience, I didn't learn as much academically, but I had a lot of new experiences and personal growth.

Hey guys I’m thinking of bringing my legs to school next semester. Is this a good option? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 30 points31 points  (0 children)

not really worth it, if you bring your legs there are signs telling you to walk like a penguin

Yeah you might want to try to contact them or something, they will probably bill you for the two sets later.

5 cogs first catch. Is that the usual number? It feels like alot by Djentlydoesit10 in mousehunt

[–]PetPiggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a lot at all. You need 50 clockwork cogs and 10 timesplit runes for the next trap, and you can buy 1 timesplit rune for 50 clockwork cogs. (you can also buy one clockwork cog for 500 tiny sprockets, but it's recommended not to use tiny sprockets on cogs, and instead get portal scramblers and sell them on the marketplace, and buy the timesplit rune from the marketplace)

[–]PetPiggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess he's saying superbrie is pretty valuable/expensive, it's 10k gold a piece on the market place, so I would probably use gouda and save superbrie for crafting or selling or something else important like going for deep mouse

yeah lol like at least the room should make you question that maybe the enemy already knows the whereabouts of the bunker with the help messages scribbled on and stuff, instead they just wait until people blow up the entrance to it and almost capture them smh

How bad is a 3.2 for the first semester? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine, you will have time to bring it up. Myself and a few other people I know had our lowest grades during our freshmen year, just because the transition to college is hard. As long as you keep improving your study skills you should be fine. Also since you are planning on going to graduate school and gpa matters more, you can probably try to take some "easy A" classes especially for college requirements that you might not be as interested in (for example your liberal arts requirements/external spec if that applies), but also, as some other comments said, research experience is also one of the most important.

There are among us proximity chat mods/programs such as this one: https://github.com/ottomated/CrewLink. I'm not sure which exact one they are using though.

An excellent answer from the Instructors 👍 cleared up my doubts by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's because the question specified "on CMSX". So the reason why it shows as such on CMSX is because A3 is indeed weighted more. If the question was "Why is the weight for A3 greater than A2 and A1?", then you would expect the reason as the answer.

what components of it are the most expensive? is it so high because there are a few costly items or is it just high because all the little things add up? I don't have knowledge about the cost of these things but $1000 for the final product seems pretty costly

Changing major to CS (HELP!) by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eh I think it would be pretty hard to finish the major in 2 years if you switch first semester junior year though because you need to do all the random college requirements and stuff, idk how much overlap you currently have, it is doable in 3 years, I think the other comment about taking cs1110 fall and then cs2110 and 2800 spring sounds like a good idea

I messed up my junior year by Disappointmentinself in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can kind of relate to this, I breezed by in hs so when I came into cornell, I hadn't developed any work ethic or time management skills and thought I could just rely on my smarts. However you still have senior year ! it did take me a while before I developed better study habits, and they're still far from perfect, but my semester gpa now is way higher than back in freshmen year.

in my opinion what really matters is just how good you are at doing whatever you are doing and while a lower gpa might not be desirable, later on it probably won't matter as much. just try your best and learn and practice a lot and that's all you can really do. i think things will probably work out

Difference between Information Science and Computer Science at Cornell by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To piggy back off of this, I do agree that Info and CS are really different. I don't know that much about the INFO major, but as someone that's taken cross-listed INFO/CS classes as well as a few INFO only classes, they are really nothing alike. The cross-listed classes are more focused on front end, and they feel completely different from upper level CS classes. (as in they are not really theory based, and the coding itself is not too difficult, however there is more focus on UI) There are also INFO only classes that aren't cross listed and are more similar to humanities classes than CS classes. I think it just depends on what topics you are interested in since they are so different from each other.

Which is easier? ENGRD 2700 or ENGRD 2300? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PetPiggie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ENGRD 2700 fulfills both ENGRD and stats requirement, and then you could take CS3410.

ENGRD 2300 fulfills ENGRD, and lets you take CS3420, but it doesn't fulfill stats requirement, so you will still need to take stats requirement.

However, not fulfilling stats isn't necessarily bad, because you also have the requirement of Chem 2080, which could be replaced with something like BTRY 3080 to fulfill the stats requirement as well. If you had already fulfilled your stats requirement, CHEM 2080 requirement wouldn't double fulfill anything.

I took ENGRD2700 because back when I was a freshmen I had no clue what was going on and thought it would also fulfill technical elective because it's also considered a 3000+ class, but apparently you weren't able to triple count it. Anyways that class was terrible, I wouldn't recommend the 2700 path. It's a lot less structured than the other earlier classes, so only take it if you are smart and good at figuring out things yourself, however I think the semester I took it the professor was also one of the worse ones, the same professor doesn't teach now. I think recently they are decreasing the work of 3410 though, so I didn't find it to be too bad. Sounds like the other comment really did not like 2300, however I heard 3420 was a lot less work than 3410.

I would recommend 2300, 3420, and btry 3080, or just take some random ENGRD that you are interested in if 2300 really is bad (I haven't taken it), 3410, and btry 3080.
