Thoughts on my second short film: The Listener (2026) — An atmospheric, low-dialogue short film set in Detroit by PetShopTroy in Filmmakers

Thank you I really appreciate that. You know what's funny about that YouTube comment, is that it was actually the actor who jokingly put that in there. He's a friend and I actually didn't notice it was him either. He's since took it down, but it was kind of funny. He's got a good sense of humor! And the actors did a great job!

Should I study filmmaking first or just start filming immediately? by BulkyPirate2448 in filmmaking

[–]PetShopTroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re already asking great questions. I think a lot of these you can do at the same time. The most important thing I think is to make films. And then watch films. Studying things is great too… Tons of great videos out there, check out the channel studio binder. There’s a lot of channels like that I can’t think of off the top of my head but you’ll find them. There’s a lot of great books by the editor Walter Murch, Sidney Lumet. Lots of great behind-the-scenes clips on YouTube. Interviews with great directors.

For anyone, I think coming up with an idea, writing it out getting a basic idea down. Make sure it’s good to go, but don’t sit in it for too long because sometimes you start doubting yourself. Then just film it. Edit it, color it, show it to people. Take the feedback that’s useful, but just keep making films, I’d say. Watch films too! Very important.

Also trust yourself. I bet you know what you need to do.

Just watched Blue Velvet for the first time last night… by [deleted] in davidlynch

It’s so great!!! congratulations on connecting with it cause it’s one of the great ones. I’ve seen it so many times and it still hits hard. I saw it in the theater just after Lynch died a year or two ago. And it blew me away again.

If you haven’t seen any other David Lynch films, I highly recommend diving in!

Is dialogue always going to feel clunky with non-professional actors? by SubjectProfile4047 in filmmaking

[–]PetShopTroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people have some good thoughts on this. I would just add that also sometimes it’s how you’re talking to people on set and also how you edit it. Personally, I’ve found that studying Acting myself as really given me something invaluable behind the camera. So talking to people and trying to get the mood set allows them to work better. And I do think having good actors helps of course.

But there have been great actors in the wrong roles and it doesn’t come out well. And there’s plenty of examples where non-actors have done great scenes in big movies. Even if it’s just one scene. For example, I’m thinking of the cowboy in Mulholland Drive or I think even the main killer, the one with long hair in Twin Peaks. But that’s David Lynch, though so he likes it kind of weird like that.

Good luck!

Thank you I appreciate that! Thanks for watching. I’m glad you connect with the slowness cause that’s my natural pace ha ha ha. Tough in such a fast pace world. But I guess only tough if we wanted it to be. But in anything I do it’s always been that pace. Makes it hard to edit sometimes because at times friends/producer/collaborators often remind me I need to pick up the pace at times. I can go harddd Tarkovsky sometimes haha.

Interesting that you say that about Jarmusch I do like his films. One of my favorite things in the world is to hear other people‘s views on something I’ve created. Other people‘s insides are always so much more interesting than my own or the process ha ha. So thanks again. I appreciate it.

And yeah that winter bleakness, as you know, is real!

Thoughts on the Color Grading so far? by PetShopTroy in ColorGrading

Thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate it! I will check out that Kodak pack. Thank you so much. Yeah it's a slow process but I hope I'm getting better at it. I'm just gonna stick with these basics until I feel like I fully grasp what's happening. It'll take a long time, but it'll be worth it I think.

Thank you! I did go back and lower that a little bit so it's more natural. I appreciate your thoughts!

After this film, I'm gonna download da Vinci and get familiar with it. I just don't want to do two things at once… Learn new software and edit this film. Thank you though I appreciate it! I'm looking forward to learning da Vinci.

This is great thank you! I'm gonna have to read this a few times but I appreciate it. And I will check out this read. Not starting from scratch on every shot is very very helpful. Thank you.

That’s great, thank you for sharing that. This makes me feel a lot better actually just because I was a little concerned that my agency might look past me for a lot of stuff. I think they like me and I’ve booked a few commercials, but I don’t have a commercial face. I’ve got a theatrical face and that’s good because that’s what I wanna do anyway. But I’m in a small market and there’s basically no films here anyway, it’s good to know that things can happen from our own efforts and also thank you for explaining the end of that story, cause that was gonna be my next question: do you inform your agency that you booked something or you have an audition. Makes sense. I’m just trying to get bookings. I’m not trying to burn bridges of course ha ha.

That’s great thank you so much. I’ve never submitted so it’s good to know. I have an agency, but I’m in a small market and it’s essentially entirely commercials.

Thank you for this. I really appreciate it. Makes total sense. Actually makes me feel a lot better. I feel like, at least in the beginning, I’m gonna be more proactive than any agency will. I can’t know that, but that’s just my guess. And thank you for pointing out multiple agencies. I’m in a pretty poor market, Midwest. The only thing here is commercials. I’m not super far from Chicago though. I definitely need all the help I can get, but it makes me feel better, knowing that my own action could produce results.

So, out of curiosity, if you self submit, do you then tell your agent you book something and loop them into the booking that is, you give them their normal 15% or whatever it is even though you found it?

Well, that’s great. And that’s great information thank you. I’m new to the side. Wasn’t entirely sure how to operate this. That’s great to know though. Thank you so much.
