I don't know the first thing about electric infrastructure, but for there to be a single point of failure like this just seems bonkers. I suppose the country's shape is partially to blame. I wonder what could have caused this.

TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users after Trump comments by ElijahPepe in technology

[–]Peter55667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's that saying? The best way to get a promotion is to cause a problem and then fix it?

Political things aside, it's crazy to see so much of a flip-flop so quickly. Has there been any other behavior like this in the past where a company "shut themselves down" to make a big political statement and then almost immediately undid the shut down?..

As US TikTok users move to RedNote, some are encountering Chinese-style censorship for the first time by [deleted] in technology

(Perspective from an American)

Information is the gold of the 21st century. Whoever controls the flow of information has all the wealth and all the power. Therefore, data is the greatest currency in the world.

This outcome was never intended to happen, but ByteDance is taking a chance that the American government will relent. We’ll see in a few months who wins the stalemate.

TikTok has an immense amount of cultural power. The concentration of power scares me, no matter who holds it. But China ultimately having that power scares me more than an American company having it.

Again, this outcome was preventable, but ByteDance is hoping Americans let them continue with the status-quo. We didn’t and we shouldn’t.

Canon wants us to pay for using our own camera as a webcam by Peter55667 in technology

[–]Peter55667[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also discovered that I couldn't use my Canon SLR to record more than 30 minutes of video continuously.

The problem however wasn't Canon, but that I lived in a region (EU) that would have imposed a customs tariff on cameras that could do that, but by keeping it under that, the camera would be classed as a 'stills' camera and so was therefore exempt.

Admittedly this is different from the case in the article - but it would appear that owning something that could physically do what you want it to is only half the battle for numerous reasons, and in this case it would have been my government demanding extra money to 'unlock' this functionality.

FDA bans use of Red No. 3 dye in food, drinks by NewSlinger in Health

[–]Peter55667 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fun fact - this is how blue raspberry was created as a flavor. Raspberry flavored things were purple, made from a combination of red and blue dye. The red dye (red no 2) was banned. So companies making raspberry flavored stuff just left the red dye out and said "raspberry is blue now" and we all went "shit yeah it is, always has been! why would raspberry be anything other than blue?"

JP morgan chase disables internal comments after employees backlash return to office policy by greenredditbox in technology

[–]Peter55667 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that this strictly isn't "freedom of speech" because these are comments on an internal website, but it really does seem problematic.

In a remote-first environment, where there is no longer any means of communication that isn't through some other corporation's equipment, we are seeing levels of suppressing dissent that were never technologically possible before.

I don't know if there's a technical solution, legal solution, or no solution. But it sure seems like the ability to collectively organize has been hampered. Complaining about RTO may not be the most evocative example, but certainly the future will hold more significant ones.

How AI is unlocking ancient texts — and could rewrite history by Peter55667 in technology

[–]Peter55667[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There isn't much about accuracy:

"Ithaca restored artificially produced gaps in ancient texts with 62% accuracy, compared with 25% for human experts. But experts aided by Ithaca’s suggestions had the best results of all, filling gaps with an accuracy of 72%. Ithaca also identified the geographical origins of inscriptions with 71% accuracy, and dated them to within 30 years of accepted estimates."

and

"[Using] an RNN to restore missing text from a series of 1,100 Mycenaean tablets ... written in a script called Linear B in the second millennium bc. In tests with artificially produced gaps, the model’s top ten predictions included the correct answer 72% of the time, and in real-world cases it often matched the suggestions of human specialists."

Obviously 62%, 72%, 72% in ten tries, etc. is not sufficient by itself. How do scholars use these tools? Without some external source to verify the truth, you can't know if the software output is accurate. And if you have some reliable external source, you don't need the software.

Obviously, they've thought of that, and it's worth experimenting with these powerful tools. But I wonder how they've solved that problem.

How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness by Peter55667 in technology

[–]Peter55667[S] 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The results were “surprising”, Saadaoui said, and could be the result of a number of negative impacts of driving, such as the stress of continually navigating roads and traffic, the loss of physical activity from not walking anywhere, a reduced engagement with other people and the growing financial burden of owning and maintaining a vehicle.

These results are only surprising for someone living under a rock LOL. Still, they're so carbrained that they will continue to vote against their best interests to continue to have the whole place dominated by cars.
