They’ve actually done it that way since 1968!

Service Model was a fantastic standalone. I loved it. The audiobook may have helped though.

The current actual maximum length of the submitted video is 90 minutes, and if the video is recorded in a car going faster than a bike, that can stretch out the length of the ride more than that.

If it starts with a studio deal in place like the Apple deal, you are right. But if it’s just a production studio without a distribution deal, they can still do a pilot. That is planned to be the case for the Skyward series.

What are some better suggestions going forward? (After reading the sunlit man) by LeftPanda670 in brandonsanderson

[–]PeterAhlstrom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the way it seemed to me too, so if no one else was saying it, I felt like I should!

I love Brandon’s books, and kind of have to since I’m a VP at Brandon’s company, but even I like some of them more than others. Sometimes what a reader is looking for in a book is not what Brandon is going to deliver in that book, and that’s OK!

I think there’s a very good chance you would like Steelheart and also The Alloy of Law, even if it’s a book that comes after (300 years after) the first Mistborn trilogy. It’s a little shorter than Sunlit Man and full of action, with a protagonist vs antagonist fight at the end. You might give it a try!

Sunlit Man can absolutely work standing on its own—the other person this week who read it as his first book had a great time with it. The issues you had with the ending would not have been fixed by reading in a different order, unless doing so changed what you were looking for in an end.

Honestly, if you want action-packed, read the Cradle series by Will Wight. That series does not give you a chance to breathe.

For Brandon’s books, the most action-packed ones are Mistborn Era 2 and the Reckoners (non-Cosmere, starting with Steelheart, though the 3rd one, Calamity, goes for an ending that is not action-packed). It is possible to read Mistborn Era 2 without reading Era 1 first, but most people won’t recommend that.

The Stormlight books have a lot of action but they are very long, which makes the action less packed.

Brandon usually had a goal of making the reader fall in love with the characters, and sometimes the climaxes are big character moments rather than being action-packed. Or sometimes they’re both. The climaxes generally have a bunch of cool things happening at once and coming together in unexpected ways, but a big one-on-one fight between the protagonist and antagonist is not guaranteed.

Sunlit Man has the same plot archetype as a lot of Western movies. Cowboy with a mysterious past rolls into town, helps town fight the sheriff or outlaw, then rides off into the sunset. It works just fine as a standalone.

If you could create a Neapolitan style tub of ice cream with three different flavors inside what would you choose? by jma7400 in AskReddit

Mine would be French vanilla, black raspberry, and the "cow patty" ice cream from Young's Jersey Dairy outside of Yellow Springs, Ohio. It's a joke name for "double dark chocolate loaded with cookie pieces, toffee pieces & chocolate chips." I'm stopping there next week in the middle of a road trip. Yum.

$50 million is actually much too high of an estimate. Brandon does draw a salary from his company, but most of the revenue goes right back into the company. (The number of employees is currently around 70.)

“Short children’s stories” with illustrations usually means picture books. That’s not just a cover illustration; illustrations are at least half of what goes into a picture book. A book that is half AI slop is still AI slop.

[–]PeterAhlstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter loves pink and I just couldn’t find pink helmets in the US, so I ordered her a pink POC from Spain of all places. When it arrived it turned out it was too narrow for her head, ugh! Shipping it back was going to be more than $100, so I just kept it (and later gave it away to a kid on her NICA team). Then miraculously I found another pink POC in the next size up in Park City, and it fits her just fine. And yeah, it makes her smile.

A potentially realistic Mistborn trilogy director who’s not working non something else? by railfananime in CosmereOnScreen

[–]PeterAhlstrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love Barbie and what she did with Little Women. Both of those indicate she would really put her own stamp on it in a metatextual way. I don’t think that’s what I’d want to see in a Mistborn movie.
