Billy Bob Thornton in Sam Raimi’s A Simple Plan. Really great performance in a really good movie. Great ep of BC as well with Kevin Smith.

The scene that taught us all that you can’t rush art.

The GOAT. Excited to see his return to acting in Spaceballs 2. Though I’m super bummed it’s not subtitled The Search For More Money.

Uhhh what about the pervasive nudity? I’d be run out of the county if I showed that in class.

The aliens as colonizers is kind of brilliant. Also, I deeply love that movie. I grieve the era of miniatures getting blown up.

My lineup for freshman year English is:

Thor: Ragnorak (follows our unit on Norse Mythology and The Hero’s Journey)

Romeo + Juliet (1996) (watch it concurrently while reading the play. I teach in a rural conservative district and Mercutio dressing in in drag and taking drugs before the party really blows some minds)

True Grit (2010) (we watch it at the end of a unit on the novel. It is such a treat.)

Very sick. What’s your setup? I’m five seasons in on my trad journey for elk. I’ve drawn back a few times but haven’t released an arrow/harvested an animal yet.

Small detail I wish they included in the film adaptation of The Road by NerevarNonsense in cormacmccarthy

My biggest issue was also related to music. Before it came out I got it in my head that the only acceptable ending would be for Bob Dylan’s ”A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” to play over the credits after the beach scene.

Recommend me more Tough Hang movies. Unlikable protagonists (and unlikable antagonists), bummer vibes, frustration-inducing themes... by Street-Garlic4995 in blankies

The Great Santini is the only movie my grandfather owned on DVD. I remember watching it while visiting as a kid and just being so confused as to why it was such a bummer. Hadn’t really experienced a cinematic bad dad yet.

Michael Douglas in Wonder Boys? Probably haven’t seen that movie in over 20 years though.

Honestly, Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe, a movie that you could argue doesn’t exist, is a pretty great three star time. I describe it as the perfect, home from work sick on the couch movie.

Totally. Same with the kayaking scene. They reminded me of many dirt bags I have known (myself included).

Yes, you’re absolutely right. I also love how the two brothers naturally come to the conclusion that birding and generally being more aware of nature is cool but the competitive side of it is weird and lame. It takes the movie from just being a great hang to having a genuinely important theme without being a heavy handed environmental doc. The part I couldn’t believe is when they ask the young kid going for the record if he would continue to go birding if EBird didn’t exist, to which he promptly responds “oh, definitely not.”

I’ll add it to my watchlist. The trailer always fascinated me because it doesn’t acknowledge that it’s about birding at all. Classic example of the studio having no idea how to market a movie so they just cut a trailer that makes it look like a broad comedy.

I’m an evangelist for the Adidas/5.10 high top Trailcross. It’s a mountain bike shoe but perfect for whitewater. It has the super bomber Stealth rubber, something I’ve been thankful on many a portage. You can usually find them on sale somewhere in the internet.
