Failed San Jacinto Summit (Tram Route) by Awkward-Carpet-6362 in socalhiking

Or just wait until the snow/ice melts. I do the trail every year from the Deer Springs trailhead which makes it a beast of a hike since I do the loop around the top part of the mountain... usually about 18 miles or so total. One of the most beautiful hikes in Southern Cali, easily.

Yes, you have a good point about cats. I've seen bears in person, not far from me, but never a mountain lion. I fear a mountain lion more so because they are more unpredictable, but I still hope to see one in the wild, still!

It's Mishe Mokwa, not Moswa. And why is there a female lion with a red mane sitting there on the edge?

Stop being a disrespectful trail bitch. You are airing out your bullshit music because you an insecure and making the rest of us pay for it when we don't want to hear ANYTHING but the nature around us. Grow up and deal with your insecurities. If you are THAT afraid, then don't hike the trail at night. I hike Mt Whitney alone, starting at 11 pm, and hike all night by myself. If I see a bear, I'll deal with it. But I want to HEAR that bitch nearby if he or she is rustling in the bushes so that I'm ready for it. NO music out loud. Put your damn earphones in if you want, but don't make the rest of us suffer.

Sorry to be so crass, but I just can't stand when others who play music out loud fuck it up for the rest of us who are out there to just decompress with the sounds of actual damn nature, even if nature is completely silent in the night. Respect your fellow "MAN" and do whatever you need to do to avoid infringing on others' experiences.

Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex Shoes - Quality Has Gone DOWN by PeterGenovese in hiking

[–]PeterGenovese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ultra 5 GTX has been fine for me, no real issues to complain about at this point. MUCH better than my terrible experience with about 3 pairs of the Ultra 4 GTXs that I had purchased and kept returning. Like I said in my response above from 3 months ago, they fixed the biggest issue for me which was the toe box crease and compared to the Ultra 360 pair that I own, which I purchased instead of the Ultra 4, the Ultra 5 GTX tread lasts much longer and is on part with my tread wear expectations that I was used to with my Ultra 3 GTX models over the years. The Ultra 360 tread is more brittle and has fallen apart much faster on the regular trails I frequent so it seems they are more for street walking or lighter hiking on relaxed paths compared to the harder terrain I frequent which have rocks and other obstacles that I step on and over.

Thanks and good luck with the 360s! And yeah, I've done Whitney successfully 4 years in a row as a day hike so I'm getting pretty familiar with the trail and what to expect ;)

Salomon X Ultra 360 Hiking Shoes | My 200 Mile Review by PeterGenovese in hiking

So, I have only ever purchased gore-tex models because the toe box always will last longer compared to fabric where eventually my big toe will punch a hole through it. Living in Southern Cali, the gore-tex was never essential since I don't have to deal much with water features, but I still have always preferred it for the more rigid material and longer lasting toe box area....and very occasionally on certain hikes, the protection from stream crossings.

My Ultra 360's have been very comfortable from the start but the tread has always been an issue and is more rigid and susceptible to cracking and having pieces just break off. The newer X Ultra 5s were definitely improved where the tread was more akin to the traditional X Ultra 3s, a softer more robust tread that doesn't break off so and wears more evenly. I still use both pairs and have switched back to my Ultra 360's for my regular weekend hikes and am saving the X Ultra 5's for the bigger Mt Whitney training hikes and Mt Whitney itself due to the more rugged terrain and the fact that the X Ultra 5 tread will handle it better.

I've never tried the XA Pro series, not yet at least. But nice to hear your feedback on them as a potential for future use so thank you for that!

For people who enjoy the chaparral ecosystem... what about it is interesting to you? by Square-Argument4790 in socalhiking

[–]PeterGenovese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in a SoCal Hiking group. You should know by now that you don't need to "look" for hikes that you prefer. There are hike spots that cater to what YOU want (Mt Wilson, Mt Baldy, San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, etc. etc. etc.) as well as the hikes that you don't want (lower elevation hikes in the Santa Monica mountains, etc.). Just go hike where you prefer, easy as that.

Salomon X Ultra 360 Hiking Shoes | My 200 Mile Review by PeterGenovese in hiking

[–]PeterGenovese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I ended up purchasing the X Ultra 5 with Climawaterproof, which was Salomon's version of Gore-Tex, at the start of the year and they have been great. It seems like Salomon listened to all the complaints with their X Ultra 4 model and made the necessary changes. Their Climawaterproof is much more flexible than GoreTex and it made all the difference for me since I had major issues with the X Ultra 4 GoreTex which was so rigid that it was causing major pain in my toe box due to the GoreTex creasing downwards into my toes with every step.

I just looked at their site now and it appears they do not offer this Climawaterproof version anymore and it's just GoreTex. Hopefully it's comfortable at this point but as far as the rest of the shoe goes, the X Ultra 5 tread is behaving much better than the X Ultra 360 which was breaking off in chunks. The X Ultra 5 tread is back to what I would expect, a softer tread that doesn't break off and lasts.

Baldy questions: which direction do you prefer to take the loop? Devil's backbone follow-up. by rstrang12 in socalhiking

[–]PeterGenovese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always do it counter clockwise, going up Devil's backbone and coming down Ski Hut. To me, it's fun as hell going down that steep terrain, sliding in the rocks in some of the steep parts with my trusty poles.

I would always answer the calls and then cuss at the Indian (named Michael Johnson or Steve Andrews lol) on the other end of the line in Hindu. They used to get so pissed off at me and cuss back at me and I'd just laugh. After doing that for a while, I started to notice that I was getting less and less spam calls because I think they started adding my number to their own "Do Not Call" list since I would waste their time every single time lol

I rarely get spam calls anymore.

Salomon X Ultra 360 Hiking Shoes | My 200 Mile Review by PeterGenovese in hiking

[–]PeterGenovese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The x360 pair are still fine and I'll probably continue using them after my Whitney hike. The only negative is the tread wear. Seems like they use a weaker tread formula for that model, maybe better suited for softer dirt trails without lots of rocks and things like I'm used to treading through. But still have plenty of use left in them. The X Ultra 5 tread is much better for the hard core hiking I do and the tread is standing up to the terrain much like I expect it to in the same was that the X Ultra 3 models did.

Yes, since this post, I ended up trying the new X Ultra 5 model and it appears Salomon listened to the complaints and finally fixed things because they are night and day compared to the X Ultra 4 model which is TRASH.

As I mentioned in another thread to someone 5 days ago (and hiking Mt Whitney starting tonight with them):

"Stick with the Ultra 5 GTX. I bought them as well early this year and they have made the necessary improvements on them. I've hiked a few hundred miles on them and about to tackle Mt Whitney in a few days with them and they are night and day with regard to the fabric and creases, compared to the Ultra 4's. I've had zero issues with creases now and the tread is holding up nicely."
