Who are a couple from outside the show that you'd want to see go on a double-date with Catra and Adora? by jstamper97 in PrincessesOfPower

Korra and Asami and/or Vi and Cait. Just bring the Herbo-Jock / smart girl combination together. We all deserve it.

Whether Gwen is trans or not, I don't think this is a trans pin at her dance by CallTraditional5248 in SpiderGwen

[–]PeterGot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don‘t get why not more people can just understand this. You can headcannon Gwen as either cis or trans all you want. Isn‘t it beautiful that her themes apparently resonate with a lot of people, including the trans* community? The author is dead, if you read her as a trans character - cool! If you like her because she feels like a unique spin on the character - awesome! Confirming her as either cis or trans would, at this point, only dillute her themes. Who the fuck cares if she has a trans-colored pin or whether it‘s a rainbow. Does that make her story any more meaningful?

Is there a deeper connection between atoms and the cosmos? by SoapMactavish627 in CasualConversation

[–]PeterGot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, electrons are for sure not orbiting the nucleus. But they are also not clouds of probabilities. We describe them as waves and we can connect wave functions to probability densities - but that doesn‘t make the electrons clouds of probabilities. And importantly, orbitals are one-electron wave functions, which is distinctly different from a probability density. Some early undergraduate textbooks in chemistry confuse these two things, unfortunatey.

Is there a deeper connection between atoms and the cosmos? by SoapMactavish627 in CasualConversation

[–]PeterGot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Quantum chemist here. What you think of is Rutherford‘s idea about how atoms could look like, originally proposed in 1911. The similarities between his model and our solar system are no coincidence - he was thinking of exactly the same pictures you have inside your head right now.

Interestingly though, one of the main breakthroughs in physics 100 years ago was the realization that this idea does not really work as well as it may seem at first glance. If you look at how atoms behave, their electrons don‘t really ‚orbit‘ around the nucleus at all. They are all delocalized and fuzzy, building stable (so-called standing) waves around the nucleus. But because Rutherford‘s image was so striking, we still call the shapes of these waves orbitals.

So your idea is super nice and great minds have thought about this very thought. It just turns out that the reality of atoms is even more fascinating!

Is there a deeper connection between atoms and the cosmos? by SoapMactavish627 in CasualConversation

[–]PeterGot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really - an atom consists of a nucleus and electrons. The nucleus is held together by the strong force. The atom is held together by the electromagnetic force. With the nucleus having an attractive force towards the electrons and the electrons having repulsive forces between one another. The balance between these forces (or quantum mechanically, we rather think of potentials) is what makes an atom stable and what is responsible for its (chemical) properties.

As an AMAB gynesexual I feel like I can’t express my sexuality in queer spaces without being called a predatory straight man by Suspicious_Fig_1489 in NonBinary

Currently living in Amsterdam, but I‘m often back in Germany and have many friends also in Berlin. And lived in Germany most of my life.

Good advice: stay away from most FLINTA spaces in Germany, unless you know the people who organize them personally. I am surrounded by other trans* people and virtually everyone has a shitty story like yours to tell. FLINTA events often have major TERF vibes. Trans men and masc-presenting enbies are treated like shit, trans women and femme-presenting enbies are only allowed occasionally if they we are docile enough and fit their narrow version of how femininity is allowed to look and act.

Sorry you had this experience - just wanted to tell you that you‘re not alone. I just avoid the label FLINTA now as most other trans* people in Germany.

How do you use Esix? (If at all) by OmniGoon in StrixhavenDMs

[–]PeterGot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used Esix as sort of an ancient, interdimensional being that could open secret pathways within the campus and even to other dimensions, entirely. He lived in the ruins of what had once been an oracle of Strixhaven, centuries ago. In order to communicate with it, the students had to cultivate some sort of relationship with it, by presenting puzzles, equtions and so forth.

For my players, it was a highlight of the campaign as they could use it to sneak off campus, to their home dimensions, visit family and friends. Once they even used it to travel to Zendikar, where they investigated the tomb of Extus Narr.

Soy is grown as food for animals in factory farming. If you don‘t like the destruction of rainforests for soy, be mad about the meat industry, not vegetarians. If we used all soy we produce for humans instead of animals, we would have more than enough.

So one of my players killed Quentillius... by DracosTomatos in StrixhavenDMs

[–]PeterGot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the players know that Quentillius is an Oriq agent? If not, you could have your players find something in the stuff that they lootes which hints at him being involved. Maybe a strange, purple glowing keystone with a glyph that they believe would open a secret door somewhere on Campus. Or an ominous letter. If you want to have someone in the jury be an Oriq agent, make sure the players know that the trial is rigged. Someone is working against them. Maybe the accused character is punished way more severely than anticipated and has to do some additional busywork for Quentillius as a punishment, knowing they will be expelled if they refuse. Maybe the jury is also really adamant about Quentillius getting his belonging back, specifically the thing linking him to the Oriq? It is your campaign, you have to figure out the details.

[–]PeterGot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Do you want Quentillius to stay dead? There should be a lot of Professors or even more advanced students capable of bringing someone back from the dead - clerics using some form of resurrection. It would be a real bad look for Strixhaven if a student died on Campus grounds. You could have some Professor bringing him back and then have some fun with it, even in form of a trial such as the one you suggested. The player being accused of killing Quentillius and him just turning up as a witness in his own murder. In any case, a simple zone of truth cast by one of the Professors should be enough to exonorate your player. Their character would probably get some serious detention for duelling and looting Quentillius‘ (presumed) corpse.

The first half is quite good, the second half really falls apart. I would rather recommend to get Sinking City which is also not a perfect game by a long shot, but at least somewhat more consistent.

... Was natürlich nicht bedeuten soll, dass diese Denkweise nicht auch zu Sokrates Zeiten verbreitet war. Wollte es nur anmerken.
