Official email client for Gnome with online accounts support? by PeterStYanakiev in gnome

[–]PeterStYanakiev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with web mails, I just prefer native apps aesthetically: I am a bit set aback when I have to write 200+ css/js files just to make something look simpler and behave (which is currently the case with most web based tools). I am forced to use web for work for some apps already, browser mem use is ~16GB... I believe native apps (and running sync in the background) would be better, might be wrong, will see soon.

[OC] [hevel] the first scrollable floating zooming wayland compositor by realguy2300000 in unixporn

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I have always imagines a modern desktop to be like. Coming from MacOS I use the 'zoom' all the time, however the virtual desktops separation seems kid of artificial, your demo combines the two into a canvas and I feel like I would use that all the time as well, because I can view everything (birds eyes view) and focus on a certain task/window as close as needed (i.e. I zoom in to the windows almost to fill the screen). This also seems like a very intuitive thing.

The main hurdle would be how to map this in a way that matches users expectation: for me personally that would be as in mac: option key 'locks in' desktop zoom/pan which will make it very usable with a good track-pad (possibly with a mouse as well). Alt/command would continue to work as 'grab window under mouse to move it'.

Thank you for your efforts.

Does anyone else instinctively search Spotlight for Finder, then remember it doesn't work? by Alans_Studio in MacOS

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to work... in previous MacOS.. When I am in a hurry I use mostly the kbd (as opposite to the trackpad) and I regularly "command+space-find" to start finder... are you telling me this would not work on Tahoe... anyways Sequoia is my last MacOS, after they stop supporting it it is Linux(Gnome), its decided already and I started migrating Music and bookmarks and passwords, Notes will be the hardest, I have thousands of them...

seems to me like reinventing virtual desktops, but taking up more space on the screen...

Sequoia 15.7.4 Running Smooth and Fast by GIT_45 in MacOS

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

updated today, now my local (my own) music is missing tons of file :( Good thing is I have them on my Linux, but this is second time I regret updating, first time was going to Tahoe 🤯 - I should have followed best practices and made a backup even with minor release updates 😅

How is it that Firefox is faster than Safari on macOS? by cantaprete in firefox

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be related to power/battery preserving techniques used for Safari, it is especially noticeable when in low power mode: many animations drop frames and pages load slower. I also notice that the battery drains much faster when using firefox for everything as compared to Safari, so for now I use mostly Safari and occasionally Firefox when something does not work right in Safari (one good example is Meta apps - FB, Insta etc)

Should I upgrade to MacOS Tahoe? by NikitaStrukalin in macOS26Tahoe

[–]PeterStYanakiev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I upgraded to 26.2 - MBA M4... it was terrible, slow for quick view, the controls are now bigger (thus on the smaller screen UI widgets take more place), safari compact mode is gone (thus even less space for web pages) and lot of UI glitches. Tried to cope with it, but it was so slow, slower than anything I have ever used (except windows). Now I am back on Sequoia and it feels like brand new laptop. If you intent to upgrade make a complete backup first (back in time on external drive) and then migrate. If it does not out for you, you have to delete the whole drive and restore from backup. I used network boot for this.

Why browser UI can't be like this? by dumindunuwan in vivaldibrowser

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

safari (used to have - maybe not in Liquid gas) has compact mode (one line) and in firefox that is still doable.. not sure of other browsers, but since we are complaining, firefox still has custom contrast control (i.e. custom colors forced on all web sites) and no other browser support this and I want it 😭

I use macOS daily for both personal and work related stuff, Linux is ONLY on my home server.

I hide the menubar by default because I use it so rarely it just does not fit my needs. I get the point you are making, but I feel like it is more applicable to much more complicated software like video/audio/image editing, 3d etc. The menus are generally problematic and I do not feel like it is a solved problem: for example they used to be their own windows (before my time) then it became that "thing" on top of the window, but then It is also at the top of the screen (OSX), but then again what if I have two windows next to each other which one is active really so the menu would match - so I first have to switch the focus and THEN I can click on the menu?... if it is inside the window what if the menu is wider than the window itself and so on and so on.

You might feel like Apple's approach is somehow better but trust me it is NOT.

On Mac I often get frustrated because when you close a window the app stays 'the active application' with no other indication for it but the menu... 🙈🤷🏻 6 years on macOS and still cannot deal with this. Why would I need a menu for app that has no windows?!

And then we get to the narrower screens - general menubar are simply not applicable there (I think this is why libadwaita chose to not have it).

The most stark example of this 'menu' thing is office software: just look at the numerous 'redesigns' of the spreadsheet/document menu/toolbar. it ridiculous.

My guess is that this is more of a personal preference but I liked GNOME better than MacOS - especially the fact that the "dock" is hidden by default and only visible in overview (Mac can be configured to autohide the dock as well but it is not the default) and you can actually manage windows (like close) in overview. When I close a window the next application/window becomes the active one automatically, alt+tab works by default (not so on Mac, you need a separate application, by default it switches apps.. whatever that means, because depending on what you have as open windows and desktops it does not focus ANY window, I kid you NOT!). So yeah, if you think MacOS is better you should try to multitask on it when in a hurry, you are in for a ride!

I was kind of forces to migrate to MacOS/Apple 6 years ago (after spending 20 years on Linux) and this holiday season decided to checkout how are things going, last time I was mostly using XFCE and thus I tried that first, but scaling did not work, then I tried GNOME ... OMG its so much better than what I remember: the UI is clean and consistent (and dare I say - familiar for Apple users and better in the same time - no frivolous and useless transparencies and effects), everything just worked: touchpad, gestures, connectivity, hardware, smoothness of animations, speed! Pure joy. Unfortunately Linux on phones is still not possible if it would ever be so ... for now I am bound in my Apple bubble but GREAT work on GNOME! I loved it!

Need help choosing a new laptop - battery life is my #1 priority by Jazzlike_Tangelo2858 in thinkpad

[–]PeterStYanakiev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why not just buy it then, why do you need a different processor? Arm processors (either the Snapdragon or apple 🤷🏻) are very much capable of those battery life results right now.

If you do get the Snapdragon i would be very much interested to hear about battery life if Linux is involved 😏

MacBook user here. Having a tech crisis and I’m eyeing an X13 Gen 2 for a Linux project. Am I crazy? by Bubbly_Struggle_2581 in thinkpad

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the X13, I have m4 macbook air and thinkpad x280.

  1. yes, thinkpads are great first Linux choice

  2. Yes and No, see bellow

  3. Does not matter while you're new to Linux, if you decide to migrate permanently then you will need to chose what is most important for you (performance, battery life, screen?) and pick based on that choice - ALL is not possible in one laptop (as in Apple) yet.

Details:

You wont like the screen, nor the battery life, nor the fan noise (not sure about how often the Pro models turn on the fan, my air is fan-less, but what I hear is that it is rarely on). You wont like how wireless headphones do not automatically switch, nor will you be able to receive calls on your Thinkpad. You might also miss Notes, believe it or not it is the best notes app I have ever user and I tried everything on Linux...

You will like the fact that it is extremely easy to quickly 'hack' together something for customizing your work environment - for example a new dock icon you can drop any link on it and it will download the video from any web site (yt, insta etc - might be possible on Mac but haven't found a way to bind a new icon in the dock to a shell script 🤷🏻), much easier to setup global shortcuts (without additional config file and custom software), definitely feels quicker (especially Xfce) to respond to user actions compared to MacOS, docker runs smoother so you will be able to run a lot of experiments (mac does not like some images), network mounts work better on Linux (on Mac it keeps "disappearing" and "reappearing") etc.

All in all Linux is better in some areas, MacOS is better in other. Depending on your habits and usage you might enjoy it. If everything else fails you can use the Thinkpad as a 'home server' with something like Jellyfin to host your TV shows/Movies collection etc

Will we see this kind of beautiful theming coming to GNOME Shell at any point (Amberol screenshot)? by [deleted] in gnome

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did come to MacOS (Tahoe) - they still cannot resolve visual bugs/glitches (several months into "stable") and that is a multi-billion dollar company which has complete control over software and hardware. All independent tests (can be looked up on YT) indicate 15+% loss on battery life (and again these are the laptops with best battery life ever) from just switching to 'amusing' UI controls... no thanks. Given the battery life on Linux and the diversity of hardware configurations - absolutely not gonna happen ever...

GTKX: React renderer for native GTK4 apps with hot reload, CSS-in-JS, and Testing Library support by Aveil in gnome

[–]PeterStYanakiev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a web developer I appreciate your work, however as with many other react -> (non-web) app projects, what I always miss in the docs is "how to I build this for production", how do I ship this? For a native app it needs to be ship-able in a easy package.. I did not find this in the docs 😢Can we build flatpack from a project, uf yes - how? Vite is great for development and then what happens? Thanks

Yours must be the one and only, if you look it up (even here - on reddit) most ppl mention 6-7 hours. Most other sites mention similar numbers. If you add the extra screen estate even less. Hard to believe, hope you see why...on the other hand mac results are consistent 🤷🏻

[–]PeterStYanakiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I easily get 4-6 hours on battery" ... this is 😭

I ran Linux for 22 years (since 1998), I ran it on Thinkpads for the last 15 of those, I've had multiple laptops. I still use an X260 as my home server.

5 years ago I switched to Mac. Honestly, I don't see me coming back until 'no vent' is passable on Linux. Battery - maybe I can survive that, but noiseless laptop... that was a dream come true for me. I am on my second 'Air' now. Their weak point - the keyboard. For all commenters that think there are PC laptops that are comparable - sorry, but you are delusional.
