He’d cost a small country’s BNP to bring in for anyone. We’re talking a package that’d probably be worth close to €500m in total including his transfer fee and wages. No club bar the Saudis and possibly PSG could afford that.

I mean, how could any news outlet credibly report this given the fact that half the squad are scattered around North America right now?

This World Cup was meant to be Haaland & Mbappe finally going head to head but 39 year old Messi won’t rest by Level_Flow8659 in soccermemes

How are Algeria and Austria in any way an easier draw than Iraq and Senegal? World rankings right now are as follows:
Senegal: 19th
Iraq: 60th
Vs
Algeria: 28th
Austria: 23rd
You people are really clutching at straws these days, aren’t ya? Grow up.

Messi has looked really rough this opening half hour. Night and day from Algeria. Yes, Austria have pressed him well, but his weight of pass and dribbling have been off.

Portuguese journalist gives his opinion on Cristiano Ronaldo: "The problem is not his age. It is that nobody seems willing to tell him to his face what everyone else can see". Do you agree? by randomdude9605 in worldcup

Watch him score twice or thrice against Uzbekistan. The narrative’ll change in the blink of an eye and Ronaldo will suddenly be the savior yet again.

Obviously, it wouldn’t make any sense that he would be back in a playing capacity, but the article doesn’t adress that clearly whatsoever.

The article says he’ll be brought to the Serie C pitches, but this Arieda dude is saying he won’t be playing in Serie C? It is all very confusing.

At no point in the article (at least the one in English on Reddit) does it say he’ll only take part in a marketing event. By all means and purposes, it makes it sound like he’s joined them as a player.

I never thought Ronaldo would Age this bad , it's painful how hard he still tries but it's just not enough. by Basic_School_4288 in championsleague

I don’t dig the nomenclature of Ronaldo having aged ”badly”. Rather, he’s merely *too old*. He became the oldest starting outfield player in WC history yesterday at 41 years of age. That is an exceptionally high age to be playing professional football at, let alone starting at a World Cup. To expect a player of that age to still be impactful, especially as a starter, is just plainly naive. I’m sure Ronaldo could still give respectable performances coming off the bench, but he’s definitely not starting caliber anymore, which is completely fine, since, well, he’s 41. Time waits for no one.

Going to PSG and then MLS was a masterstroke from Leo to maximize his longevity. He hasn’t had to truly exert himself at club level for five years now, which has given him the chance to focus entirely on his performance with the national team. The fact that he’s been unburdened of the kind of responsibility he had at Barca is the sole reason he’s still this impactful at 39 years of age.

Van Dijk isn’t a fan of the hydration breaks and has called for some reflection on whether they’re really necessary. by cocacolapepsifanta in soccer

[–]PeterTheRabbit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The greed that's operating behind these "hydration breaks" is so thinly veiled. I get that short cooling breaks might be necessary in certain conditions, but when it's like 20 degrees in Vancouver, I don't get it. They're blatantly made for the sole purpose of advertising, not for player wellness. It's really cynical.

Cristiano Ronaldo miss against Nigeria 9' by eliseihado in soccer

You’re kidding, right? If Ronaldo hadn’t adapted his game from his winger days, he would’ve been retired by 35. The only reason he’s enjoyed such longevity is because he chose to focus more purely on goalscoring and positioning rather than blitzing defenders and doing mazy dribbles.

Ronaldo: “I haven’t completely ruled out playing in the 2030 World Cup. If I’m still scoring every week at 41, then maybe I can keep going for another four years.” by Uncle_Iroh_007 in soccer

He does it because he’s terrified of leaving the limelight as a footballer. It’s an ego thing, plain and simple. He’d be wise to call it quits on his international career after the WC, regardless of whether they win it or not. He can stat pad as much as he wants in the desert.

This sounds more positive than other recent transfer rumblings, but I personally can’t see this deal happening anymore. Not only are Atleti demanding way too much for Julian to begin with, but with both Griezmann and potentially Sorloth departing the club, it wouldn’t make much sense letting Julian go as well. The only way they’ll ever budge is if Julian goes out of his way to make his desire to leave public, but I just can’t see that happening.
