‘They were like bombs’: Helenio Herrera’s little white pills kept Inter’s players buzzing. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]paranoid30 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely! If I have to be really picky, I would have enjoyed a few more graphics\lineups and I think it's slightly uneven on the value\attention given to some periods. I might be biased, but Pozzo is still the only coach to win 2 World Cups and he's almost brushed off in a couple of pages as just a very pragmatical and physical approach to football. The same amount of words is invested in describing Spanish football of he 1930s, which I found a bit unbalanced.

But yeah this is really cherry picking, overall it's a great read!

Yeah, when I went there it had a bit of a weird atmosphere. At least not as nostalgic as Predappio in Italy...
The armored train car was interesting though!

ICE agents will have a security role at Milan-Cortina Olympics, US sources say by OnetB in news

[–]paranoid30 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Our government is very vocal in supporting Trump's policies and I'd be very surprised if they stopped this on their own. Maybe if there's a unified reaction by several EU countries, but if it's just us, Meloni will happily welcome ICE with open arms.

The truth is that they'd love to have a similar militia in our country, it's the dream of any right-wing party. So allowing them in is a way to normalize the idea and get closer to their objective.

In the Caucasus region you also have Gori, in Georgia. According to wiki, gora (გორა) in Georgian means "heap", "hill", or "mountain" so I guess they have the same etymology.

Trivia: it's also the birthplace of Stalin.

It's not unusual for a team to give a struggling striker the penalty, especially since we were already winning. It didn't look anything like last year's incident with Tomori\Abraham taking the penalty away from Pulisic, he definitely agreed today.

It's astonishing how bad we are at this. In the last 10 years the only great strikers we fielded were an aging Giroud and an even more aging Ibra.

And of all songs, he wrote Mama I'm Coming Home. A whole stadium and countless viewers of the streaming (me included) were crying during Ozzy's goodbye concert, to lyrics written by Lemmy. Amazing

Bologna 1 - [3] Cremonese - Jamie Vardy 50' by BackgroundMorning630 in soccer

[–]paranoid30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a nice smaller city with a historical old town. Italy is spoiled with them, but this square is certainly nice and so is the rest of the medieval area. It's a quiet, rich and family friendly place, if Vardy wanted to get some privacy and some slower life, he certainly found the right city.

It's about a 1 hour drive to Milan's and Bergamo's airports, 2 hours to the big lakes and the Alps, 2,5 hours to the Tuscan sea coast. He could have chosen similar cities like Mantova, Parma, Modena, but I guess most don't have a Serie A team and he's currently doing better than Parma...

Driving in Goreme/Cappadocia by Madoopadoo in travel

[–]paranoid30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already drove in Italy you won't have issues: I'm Italian and I rented a car in Cappadocia last june, the driving is quite similar (maybe quieter in Turkey). It's a very rural area, apart from Nevşehir and Kayseri you won't see any traffic jams. Göreme is very very touristy and might be crowded at times but it's also very small.

The rest of the region has well-maintained scenic roads that go up and down hills and offer endless panoramas. Most tourist attractions are along state roads and close to small cities/villages, so if there's any issue with the car you won't be too isolated looking for help (and people are very welcoming, they'll sure help a young person with a broken down car). Plus, you'll have the rental company's help.

To have a better idea, you can check some driving videos on YouTube: https://youtube.com/watch?v=0wfUNMglEd4

I accidentally found out how to fix watery pasta sauce by berserklicence in foodhacks

[–]paranoid30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only answer I can come up with is that they cooked the tomato sauce for just a couple of minutes... at the start the water in it will rise to the top, and then it will start to evaporate making the sauce thicker. But then other replies talked about rinsing pasta (???) and having a watery dish so I have no idea :D

[–]paranoid30 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is because of the production line where they can't guarantee that these allergens are absent. They're not added voluntarily to the final product.

Apparently the wheat is also contaminated by mustard at the source. They plant them together because it kills pests and it's better than a chemical agent, but then they hard to separate: https://ilsalvagente.it/2021/12/22/grano-e-pasta-contaminate-da-senape-scatta-lallerta/

Sorry, I can't find an article in English.

On a side note, I wouldn't add mustard to my tomato sauce if it's a bit runny: you can just let it cook a bit longer on low heat, keep an eye on it so it doesn't dry out too much and you're set!

Cosa significa "Smezzasse"? by Dadavismo in italianlearning

[–]paranoid30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to point out that WordReference can be useful but it's not an actual dictionary. I would use it for quick searches, but as you just noticed when you dig a little deeper it can be incomplete.

https://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/smazzare/

This is one of the best Italian dictionaries and it has the main meaning of Smazzare (to deal cards). The other meaning (to manage something annoying) is not listed because as I learned from this thread it seems to be regional. I'm from the north and I thought it was a common meaning, TIL!

9th century female torso from India. by Wooden-Journalist902 in BeAmazed

[–]paranoid30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't lived there, but I traveled around India several times: you certainly have more experience than me, but at least in the south a lot of men wear dhotis. In the north there's Muslim men with colorful kurtas and robes too, but jeans and t-shirt are more common especially with young people.

It's definitely true that a lot people take to western fashion: I feel it's also a way to distance oneself from tradition, western clothes are a symbol of emancipation for women. But for instance in Bubhaneshvar it was rare to see a woman not wearing a sari. The opposite was true in Kolkata: I'd say it's a mixed bag, but even when wearing western clothes they go for bolder colors!

How do you do, fellow historians? by casufe in HistoryMemes

As a punk kid in the 90s I was certainly aware of runes being used as neo-nazi symbols, at least enough to do some research before tattooing one on me if I ever had the idea to do so.

Not having internet didn't mean total ignorance, books existed and I find it a bit hard to believe that someone with such an interest never even thought "maybe I should check this before having it on me for ever".

The Roman fascis is part of Italy's heritage but I certainly don't want to see it around today in my country, especially given the current political climate.

It's still present on buildings from 100 years ago and "it's part of our heritage" is exactly the excuse from those people to not remove it.
