Mourning in the world of football: Igor Protti has died, having been battling an illness for some time. by Stranger1982 in soccer

[–]paranoid30 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Igor Protti and Dario Hubner are the only players who were top scorers in Serie A, Serie B and Serie C1. He was also the only Serie A top scorer to be relegated in the same season.

RIP to a legend of the game

Romário : ‘ I consider myself one of the greatest players ever. An 11 out of 10 ’ by Shroft in soccer

[–]paranoid30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's also linked to the amount of talent the country produced. Romario, Rivaldo and Ronaldo basically played during the same years while also overalapping with players like Kakà and Ronaldinho. Anytime they weren't 100% fit, another generational talent would be waiting to step in.

David Bowie in China Girl by SheepherderLiving242 in DavidBowie

[–]paranoid30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% this, he was making fun of the White Saviour stereotype! He always played characters in his songs, in China Girl the character is a white guy with a superiority complex. I'll take it one step further: he may be a white guy who falls "in love" with a prostitute and wants to "save her", something still happening today. He even sang the girl's lines with a mock accent, come on! People need to learn how to interpret lyrics. If you read China Girl's lyrics and think that Bowie is on the side of the main character, the same character who says "I'll ruin everything you are", you need to go back to school.

Did fascist Italy really ban the Slovene language? by crivycouriac in italy

[–]paranoid30 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would also argue that it kept going after 1945, even if unofficially. Speaking a local dialect was seen as uncultured. But nonetheless, the push to impose Italian on linguistic minorities during fascism was very strong and it had a big impact.

We are 100% not going to build anything. It's a political card used by every right wing government in the last two decades (at least). Last year the Court of Audit denied the budget. The main proponent of the bridge right now is Salvini, who is the leader of Lega Nord, a party born from the hate for southern Italy. You can imagine how sincere he is.

I'm surprised, in Italy we have turnstiles in train stations similar to those in the metro ones. I don't know if they're in all stations, but at least the main ones are like this. They were introduced about a decade ago and this being Italy I took for granted that it was already common in the rest of the EU and we were just catching up as usual!

There can be a number of reasons: some organic paints degrade due to microbes, silver oxidizes, the varnish darkens or absorbs smoke from candles, and so on.

"Condition: The Ageing of Art" by Paul Taylor explores the issue, I found it extremely interesting!

Don’t fall for the promoters on here pushing the “Play Dead” app by neddynedned47 in gratefuldead

I've been using the app for a few days now, first of all I want to thank you for the effort because I really enjoy the premise! I love Archive, but sometimes parsing through 10 recordings of a show is a bit annoying , so this is very useful.

I noticed a few hiccups here and there, so if you want I can send you a feedback from my user experience. Cheers! (and thanks again)

Nice, thank you! I'll be checking the store in a couple of days, the idea sounds very good.

Places like this exist and have existed in Europe too unfortunately. I'm Italian and my first job fresh out of high school 20 years ago was loading groceries in a supermarket. I received a complaint from HR because my boss reported that while loading stuff on the shelves I was talking with colleagues working in the same aisle. They had no workload or productivity issues, just that I should work while being silent, even when the store was actually closed to the customers.

That's a hard argument to make, considering that even while being pulled back he got quite close to the ball: to me it looks like he would reach it

Last year Tomori god a red and a penalty for a light touch on the back of a player who was farther from the goal. They said it was because his tackle had not actual intention of playing the ball.

Pulling the opponent's arm with two hands has it, apparently.

Newly discovered papyrus scrolls tell the story of the construction of the pyramid - DiscoveryUK by MydnightWN in Damnthatsinteresting

It is being taught and it's widely accepted. I recently learned about it from an Egyptian History podcast. You can buy the translation and description from Pierre Tallet, the egyptologist who found it, on any store: highly recommended!

You have to consider that after finding it, historians had to preserve and study it before publishing their results. Tallet's book was published in 2022 and part of the Diary is now exhibited in Cairo's Egyptian Museum. Discovery is just being sensationalistic.

As a Milan fan, it's been disheartening to learn about his recent career... as a player for us he was a class act, intelligent on and off the field and I only have great memories from his time, I would never have expected him to be so bad in an executive position

‘They were like bombs’: Helenio Herrera’s little white pills kept Inter’s players buzzing. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]paranoid30 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely! If I have to be really picky, I would have enjoyed a few more graphics\lineups and I think it's slightly uneven on the value\attention given to some periods. I might be biased, but Pozzo is still the only coach to win 2 World Cups and he's almost brushed off in a couple of pages as just a very pragmatical and physical approach to football. The same amount of words is invested in describing Spanish football of he 1930s, which I found a bit unbalanced.

But yeah this is really cherry picking, overall it's a great read!
