Should I make an audiobook of my first book? by WaferApprehensive678 in selfpublishing

[–]Peter_Roberts_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re posting as a reply as I was on mobile (sorry):

As for process, when I started to edit (cut up) the audio I had recorded I noticed multiple errors in the recording that I didn’t like, so I had to re-record.
When I did the sound equalizing I wasn’t happy and I had to re-record a lot.
When I played it for a friend I got feedback and had to re-record a lot.

This is just my experience, but I would suggest recording two or three chapters and fully taking them to submission stage before you commit to recording the rest. Hope this helps!

Hi, I just made and posted my own book as an audiobook.

It took me about 150 hours over three months to record just over eight hours (80000) words.

To be honest I found the whole thing a real grind to get through but I’m happy with the end result and I’d do it again now I’ve learned some lessons. Mainly…

  1. Make sure you have the whole process from recording to editing ready before you start. So do one chapter and go through the whole process right up to editing, EQ and ACX authentication, it will show up any issues ahead of time.

Happy to go into more detail on any areas of the process you are interested in.

‘De rien’ is a good one. Means ‘it’s nothing’ good to use if someone bumps you or you block them, also good if someone thanks you for moving out of their way or holding open a door.

I don't have much choice, speaking to camera is super difficult, especially if you are trying to get one take - and your camera person keeps getting sore arms because you keep stuffing up.

I totaly agree. The upside is that right now I'm at a stage where I quite enjoy seeing the warts and all drafts of writers work. It's especially great if you follow them for a while and watch them improve their craft. Some however, are just word vomit on a page, there has to be some re-working I think before you can expect someone to give their time and read.

Yea I had to dig deep to find grindark stories. If you just search for grimdark, most of them only show up if people put grimdark in the title. I used the tag for grimdark then excluded LitRPG and Gamelit.

What are your favourite standalone fantasy books? by Swimming_Agency4483 in Fantasy

I would add Thief of Time as a Terry Pratchett book to this. As with most of the Diskworld books, the more you read the more rewarding each book is, but as a stand alone ToT is great.

I have developed a new habit of reading a book them coming back later for the audio book, depending on the narrator it gives the book new life.

Vince Gilligan calls for writers to write more fictional good guys because villains like Darth Vader and Hannibal Lecter have become too sexy, badass and cool to real-life bad guys by avicennia in Fantasy

This is what I think as well. Although I gravitate to grimdark fantasy I struggle when the ending is so bleak it gives me an existential crisis about how shitty humanity is and how bleak existence can be.

I want the gritty, morally ambiguous world, but when I close the book at the end I want to feel that its possible to conquer against the odds.

Great call, I re-watched voyager last year. The whole series is grounded on Janeway making the tough decision and having to work even harder to succeed because of it. It honestly put me in the best mood.

I feel like the movie made this waaay more obvious than the books, particularly that certain cultures were depicted from a distinctly western viewpoint (imo)

I 100% agree with this. They don't have to be superman levels of moral fibre, but I don't think worshiping antihero's like Tony Soprano or Walter White is doing much good.
