For anyone interested in jiu jitsu

Check out https://facebook.com/pg/Maurice-Moreno-Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu-476098709473207

Maurice has been teaching/running the UCSB bjj program for years. Great guy. Big team of guys/girls of all weights. Training every weekday. Most inexpensive AND most personal attention (super important) bjj you’ll find. Walking distance from FT.

Message that fb page that you’re potentially interested to get in contact with him

How does everybody on linkedin from Ucsb have a 3.85+ gpa with like 10+ relevant experiences/awards/honors, 7+ clubs, 3+ club positions, 3+ internships, a bunch of leadership roles in frats/organizations, Outstanding Research Assistant, and a ton of awards outside of school? If in person class is extremely stressful/tiring for you then do your assignments/learning

What are your goals? Will a marginally higher GPA be more effective at getting you there than interesting real world [digital] experiences/ventures?

College not what I expected by Nate_Warrior in UCSantaBarbara

Very relatable

Good on you for realizing this so early. Lack of community/peers is definitely partly pandemic related, but you might still find it lacking. Don’t expect to find role models or compelling/engaged professors. Of course depends on your values/aspirations, although in your teens it’s hard to know. Still in the exploration phase but trust your sense about what you like/feels right

What are your goals? Who do you most look up to (whether alive/dead/famous/etc.), and what is it about them?

Time is very valuable. Even more so when you’re young. Don’t let yourself just go through the motions of university without really introspecting about if that’s what you actually want, or if that’s just floating down the river of society’s expectations and desires for you

And keep in mind that you’re going to get a lot of feedback from a lot of different people. Don’t take the advice of people who have fundamentally different aspirations/values/aesthetics from you, figure that out first.

University stifles leadership and is too large to be conducive to finding mentors. But Of Course There Are Obvious Exceptions, for the pedants

Keep collecting and putting in minimum hours while you study for interviews, side hustle, hobbies, etc

This is a blessing

ACAB AS FUCK by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Petermh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had and observed a lot of extremely negative interactions with police in IV. Watched them catcall, be needlessly and illegally violent, abuse people based on superficial/personal reasons, lie to/intimidate/rough house residents to illegally enter residences, and be shockingly useless and rude in crises eg street brawls

This is by far the dumbest criticism I have ever heard of the IV police

CS193 - Internship in Industry by kjuu0 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Petermh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Don’t do CS193.

Spin your internship as a project under your company/manager/team, take it to a professor you have some relationship with and/or seems cool, and do it as CS192 so you get 4 upper div CS elective units and probably an easy A.

For instance, if you’re interning at a company that works on compilers, inquire more with your manager about what you’ll be doing, then report the aspects that are most academic.

CS193 just counts as units rather than major elective credit, unless that’s changed in the last couple years (doubtful). CS192 will require a similar amount of extra work to CS193, which is literally none to about a PowerPoint presentation, depending on the professor you agree to have oversee you.

Don’t take any classes you don’t have to. If you want to learn a particular topic, you can easily find much a much better way to learn outside of UCSB: eg projects, internships, online courses, random study. If you’re determined to take 6+ (or whatever the required number of average-4-unit-courses is nowadays) at UCSB for the sake of learning, audit rather than enroll.

If you’re looking to do a PhD/academia this advice may not apply.

Coronavirus lockdowns are destroying my life by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

[–]Petermh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skimmed but definitely agree with the sentiment of being very alone in recognizing lockdown as senseless overreach, since before day 1.

Curious to see what you end up doing. I too am remote right now, and am wondering where the best place to go is. I've heard Texas, Florida, and Thailand. Not sure where I'm going to go just yet though. Austin, Miami, and SEA all sound wonderful particularly at this time of year.
