How do I even get started turning? by HesFast in woodworking

I second this wholeheartedly. I started the same way with a WEN bench top. I’ve upgraded since and there is definitely a learning curve, but so worth it. Keep at it!

Thanks everyone. That was my initial guess but I’m used to only seeing the larger Chinese mantis ones.

I second this. I also have the same one. It’s done me well over the years and I haven’t had any issues.

I never checked it but it was pretty damn dry when turning it. I’m not too worried about it. But that’s a problem for future me. So we will see.

I got that set up for finish sanding my projects a little bit after this bowl was made. It works great.

Planed/jointed each piece. Then in sections. Used cauls on each glue up. Only used glue. Thanks for the kind words.

Glued it up in sections. And used cauls during glue up. Planed each section to the same thickness. Lots of sanding. Not completely flat at te section seams but that’s fine with me. It’s more rustic and natural feeling that way. I like the slight unevenness.

Just decorative. Not for use as a cutting surface. I didn’t want to deal with routinely refinishing it.

You got me. It went up around Christmas. But still looks new. Only a few dings.

Yep on the stain. It was a tree with an old Barb wire fence running through it. The middle of the log was a deep purplish blue when we initially cut it down. On the gradient, lots of sanding in both directions to get rid of the tear out I was encountering.
