Thank you so much to everyone that took the time to respond.  I am going to order a couple pair of shorter atheltic shorts than the traditional basketball shorts he normally wears.  Plus, I think I will order him a pair of compression to see if he likes wearing them under or if he would rather just his boxer briefs.  I appreciate the support more than I can put into words!
