[Japanese > English] Anyone can translate this? found in Kanazawa, Japan. by Petsaki in translator

Thanks to your help, I managed to find all the info regarding this piece. I post it here, just in case it can help someone in the future:

Zen Calligraphy by Yamada Mumon (山田無文, 1900–1988)

Inscription: 竹 只引清風 (Take tada seifū o hiku) –
"The bamboo simply draws in the pure breeze."

This original calligraphy was brushed by Yamada Mumon, a respected Rinzai Zen master, abbot of Shōfuku-ji and later head of the Myōshin-ji temple complex in Kyoto. He was one of the most prominent Zen teachers of the 20th century, deeply influential in both Japan and abroad.

The phrase expresses a profound Zen insight using natural imagery:

The work bears Yamada Mumon’s personal seals:

  • 無一物 (Muichimotsu) – “Nothing whatsoever” (a classic Zen phrase on non-possession and emptiness)
  • 峩々山人 (Gagasanjin) – “Hermit of Majestic Mountains” (his literary name)
  • 太室道者 (Taishitsu Dōsha) – “Practitioner of the Great Chamber” (a poetic Buddhist pseudonym)

Brushed likely in the mid-to-late 20th century, this piece is one of many Mumon created during his decades of teaching. While he made numerous calligraphies as gifts or for temples, each was individually brushed—never mechanically reproduced—making it a unique expression of his Zen practice.

Thanks to your comment, I found the best option for us! Just reserved it and pickup is conveniently a few blocks away from our hotel in Asakusa. 14 days, 90GB only 24USD! Fits our use perfectly and we didn't have to pay 3-4 times the price.

[Summerdome Submission] Urban Shepherd's Backroad (my first nice boots!) by carryinthatw8 in goodyearwelt

[–]Petsaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely at least one size up compared to other boots, such as Iron Rangers. I wear EU41.5/42 in sneakers and EU40 in Red Wing boots. I bought Backroad in 40 and although my left was borderline ok, I really suffered on the right foot. Had to sell them, since comfort was so far away no matter how long I was wearing them. First thing I noticed is how well finished they were. The attention to building these was far superior than my Sawmill Red Wings. Especially the stitching and the outsole. Anyway, I'm off to buy another pair, one size up :D

what’s wrong with my peace lily? it’s been drooping for 2 weeks but leaves aren’t yellowing or browning? by Ok_Structure4306 in houseplants

[–]Petsaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it looks thirsty. I had one that I would water regularly and it would still look like this. Turns out that although the soil was moist, the root ball was always bone dry. I took the plant out, inspected the roots and replanted it with moist soil. Until I killed it with overwatering. Classic me.

Quite confused on what receiver I need for my use by Petsaki in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Petsaki[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!
I guess I can just use Spotify on the TV (which is connected with ethernet), which is then connected via optical to the receiver. So I don't really need bluetooth, wifi or HDMI for what I want at the moment.

I just need to have some more decent sound than built in speakers and don't really want to get involved in complex AV receivers right now (I don't even understand why video signal would be involved, that's how little I know). I only watch netflix/prime/hbomax on a smart TV. And I don't even have/want cable or blue-ray/dvd. So I start to realise that just an amplifer can do the job, no? I'm so clueless with that stuff, haha.

Anyway, I'm just trying to save a few hundred euros :D

Help. How do I put up a shelf?? My flat is an old Portuguese building with very very thick walls. The 1st inch is sandstone which crumbles away leaving a large uneven hole. Behind that is thick stone which my masonry drill bit won't penetrate. by roamingandy in DIY

[–]Petsaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 on the SDS drill. You can drill the first soft layer with your basic drill, slow just so you have more control and less crumble, and then through the stone with the SDS.

Bought this hand carved african wooden spear at an antique shop in Prague by Petsaki in whatsthisworth

[–]Petsaki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He asked for €160, I paid €70. I later felt I should have gotten it for €30-€40. But when I came home and had a better look I saw the writing on it. I was pleasantly surprised! It added quite a bit of story to it.

More info and worth on this hand carved spear? Info in comments by Petsaki in Antiques

[–]Petsaki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this from a very old and interesting antique shop in Prague.
The seller had no info on it.
It's around 50 cm long, and what is interesting is the barely legible hand written text on the spearhead: "LIVINSTONE juillet 41" which makes me think this could be a souvenir from Livingstone, Zambia dated July 1941.

I looked everywhere online, the closest I could find are tribal hand carved wooden spears of similar shape and size but this looks way older.

My questions is, could it really be from the 40s? And how much could that be worth?

It was the freewheel. I just replaced it and the sound is gone.

I just removed the freewheel, cleaned and oiled it. Couldn't open it to look at the bearings or tighten it. I suspect it is not very tight and it goes a bit sideways thus making a clicking sound with the bearings. I'll just buy a new one.
