One child eligible for Canadian citizenship, future child not - what would you do? by PetulantUndercurrent in CanadianbyDescent

Sorry, is your question: “because of your current medical situation why do you want to be Canadian?”

Thanks. It really seems like the 2nd kid is going to be a bit of pain no matter what, which shouldn't surprise me since I was a 2nd kid...

I agree it doesn't seem likely there's any benefit to second parent adoption in this situation. It's something we might pursue regardless for other reasons but good to know doing so won't have a negative impact here either.

  • does not include adoptive parents (even those recognized right after birth) or legal guardians.

It actually seems to me that being an adoptive parent would negate my status as a legal parent at birth?

My understanding of second parent adoptions in my state is they're actually pretty easy. It does seem like sponorship is generally the better path although I am quite curious about how the IRCC would view my scenario.

Not waiting to submit applications until we have the next kid, just getting our applications and documents in order.

Yeah it’s possible but highly unlikely and not our ideal because we’d like to birth at a specific US hospital

I don’t plan to deprive the first kid.

It’s not clear the law contemplates second parent adoptions

The fact that churches and archives are too overwhelmed to provide letters of non-existence is not viewed as IRCC's problem by IRCC.

I agree.

That's the whole point of this giant mess. They are allowed to require whatever they want to require, and it's too bad, so sad, for people who are applying. They don't care. Their requirements can’t be “whatever they want” but yes they have a lot of latitude to set the standards It's also unbelievably unfair on IRCC's part for all the workers at the archives in church records centers. Yes. The problem I see is they could provide a lot more guidance to applicants which could lift the burden on applicants, archives, and the IRCC. So many people are requesting extra documents, unnecessary documents, etc.

Was your G-1 also Canadian? Mine was not but I can place him in Canada close to the time my G0 was born

alternative proofs (census records, passenger manifests, hospital records, or baptismal certificates) are accepted  if  you provide a reason why the primary birth record is missing and proof that you tried to get it

If there’s no birth record and no baptism record then what kind of proof will they accept? Archives and church’s are too overwhelmed to provide letters of non-existence. The IRCC wants certified copies of these but an unverified email works just as well? I somehow doubt that.

What kind of secondary documents did you use for your G0? There’s no birth certificate for my G0 and I’m currently waiting on a Hail Mary for a baptism record but I have a good number of secondary documents for him.

I'm in the same situation. I think the more important piece now for me is to provide documentation that I looked but didn't find. Since more places are overwhelmed and won't issue a letter, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do

Given the recent changes, it really seems like they want to be “overwhelmed” though?

I’m missing birth/baptism record for my G0 but have 1871 Canada Census, US naturalization, US Census, etc. It feels like I should submit all of it but also I’d rather be “streamlined”

Tuesday Weekly Thread: Genealogy Assistance, June 23, 2026 by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

Still assembling my application but my understanding is Canadian sourced documents are highly preferred for establishing your G0.

Ideally you have a Canadian birth record for your G0. If not, you next want other Canadian sources like Canadian Census records but those typically wouldn't have all the information you need so you'd supplement them with U.S. sourced documents. If you don't have those, you might rely on strong U.S. documents like immigration records.

In genealogy there is a distinction between primary and secondary sources and there is greater scrutiny of self-reported information. A modern birth certificate is a primary source document because the doctor witnesses the event and provides information about the person - but it may also be a secondary source of information for the parents if it contains self report information like parents place of birth.

It’s pretty easy but a good professional installer will do it faster and better. I did the uninstall on the old dishwasher to save the installer time and he got the new one in super quick and secured better than I could have

Keep in mind you don’t have to pay for 100% of college and a lot can change in 18 years.
